Yeah, I don't really see it as a problem, building that many bunkers, finding an area to line them up, and finding a situation where it would even be useful just doesn't really make a lot of sense. And you can move 4 marines at once at a time at most? So escaping doesn't really make any sense either.
It's impractical and kind of dumb, though I suppose there is some sort of strange micro insane way you could use it to kite something? I dunno, it's not "broken" it's just kind of a funny thing.
I used to watch every one of HD's videos, and since he started doing that radio voice thing I can't stand him and haven't watched him at all.
Is he not doing the radio voice in this commentary?
if not, could you link one where he does?
if this is the radio voice that you hate so much... then I have no clue what you're talking about, he sounds perfectly normal to me
If it doesn't bother you I guess it doesn't - randomly accenting certain words, changing his voice completely during big battles. I just don't like it, it's not genuine. His earlier commentaries he was a lot more relaxed and wasn't forcing it so much.
I understand not talking "normally" during a commentary because that is kind of boring, but it just sounds forced to me and I don't like it. I dunno, I probably do the same thing in my casting and such - I just don't like listening to it.
I don't think I would use my normal voice for casting. it would be kind of boring. you gotta be pumped and have excitement and yell stuff like PLAGUUUUUU
the initial zerg extractor steal was annoying as hell for gretorp. slush kept cancelleing and restarting it so he cant actually kill the damn thing....
I don't think I would use my normal voice for casting. it would be kind of boring. you gotta be pumped and have excitement and yell stuff like PLAGUUUUUU
Well, you have to speak a lot differently than you normally would for it to come through clear and such, but it's just the accents he puts on words and such, it's really REALLY forced to me. A lot of people don't seem to mind it which is fine but I don't like it - probably more so because I was watching HD's stuff back in early beta when no-one knew who he was.
Olorin stop trying to reduce race comparison to numbers. It's not going to work, and it's not going to help anyone play the game.
Why? Sure there are a lot of other variables, but tell me, how is it not helpful to know this amount of x beats this amount of y? I never claimed these test results are the be all end all of things, but I certainly find them helpful. In fact, I'm getting better at judging when I should engage a terran army and when I should pull back. But whatever, I'm done posting my results here.
I am pretty much the game's biggest forcefield proponent (in fact I just smote a guy with FF—he lost 10 marines and 6 marauders to my 2 zealots), but you guys are not understandin' my man Olorin.
Forcefield in its "traditional" use (i.e. splitting an army, especially a Terran bioball) is dramatically less effective at higher levels of play because people know how to play against it. A good Terran will dance his bioball back and forth, slowly picking off units and preventing FF from splitting anything. Once he hits a certain number of units (or a certain unit advantage if he has been successful in picking stuff off, which you should be trying to prevent), he can just stand there and stim up—unless you have a purely ranged army your zealots will no longer matter much, sentries or no. You can try to out-micro him and get your splits in anyway, but he has the easier task here and as long as you're both staring at that spot and microing you are unlikely to get anywhere unless you're much better at micro.
Forcefield is still fantastic if you catch someone when they're not looking, or on ramps/chokes/one player's simcity. It's also great when you've reached the midgame and you want to establish an impromptu choke for your ranged units (assuming you're zealot-lean, which is viable for certain builds). If your opponent is bringing melee units (zealots or zerglings), FF is even better. Roaches also have such short range that they're handicapped at least as much as melee units.

Look, I absolutely HATE that incongruous fake radio voice thing, here is an example of someone doing it (and Opie and Anthony making fun of it after)
my point is that HD in that commentary referenced isn't doing a "radio voice" AT ALL, it doesn't sound fake or modified for entertainment. To me it sounds as if you're just trying too hard to slam HD, who is just a college kid who commentates video games for others entertainment for FREE.
there are actually people trying to CHARGE MONEY to listen to commentaries of video games... so... in the grand scheme of things bashing HD for such a silly, and seemingly entirely made up, reason is stupid
I said that I don't like listening to it. I didn't say he's a shitty commentator (which I wouldn't agree with) and I really don't have any issues with the guy. He does good things for the community, I just don't like the way he has changed the way he talks as he has gotten more popular.

Unless you mean you lost 2 zealots, but the way I read it 2 zealots killed all those dudes!

because the monetary value of a unit is not decided by how well it stands at shoots at another unit. When you buy a zergling you aren't paying for the ability to kill .25 of a zealot or whatever. You are paying for mobility as well. When you buy a stalker you are paying for the ability to kite marines, the potential ability to blink and the general maneuverability.
What was the biggest prize pool for SC1? (Or average for team/single)
I kind of don't mind GSL charging as long as it stays low and the quality gets better. It seems running tourneys with that huge of a prize pool requires a metric ton of cash.

Sorry if it was unclear; I lost two zealots. Basically, my Terran opponent did the usual dance at the foot of my ramp, shooting and running to prevent a forcefield split. Eventually he figured I wasn't looking (which was correct) and tried to be clever by stimming up and running in. He got in, but I dropped forcefields behind me to prevent a run-by and he got a faceful of zealot. I think he must've thought I was teching or something and relying on FF for defense. He made a bad decision, basically.
Looking back, I did also lose two probes (couple marauders got past the forcefields), but I pushed him in shortly thereafter anyway so even that small difference didn't matter.

well presumably if there are enough sentries to pull something off like that it's not just 2 zealots fighting!

With stalkers you are mostly paying for the AA, actually. They're pretty sub-par against all ground units, although exploiting Blink can sometimes make up for it if you're dedicated.
Also, they're reasonably strong in the very early game when units number ten or fewer on each side.
He does good things for the community, I just don't like the way he has changed the way he talks as he has gotten more popular.
sorry, for some reason I'm picking up a little bit of HD hostility, and I'm not understanding the basis of it... you said you "can't stand him and haven't watched him at all" from " used to watch every one of HD's videos", which to me says that something made you hate him... you say it's his voice, but his voice appears to be completely reasonable.
Does the hostility come because he thinks he is cool he is trying too hard sound cool? Because I think that is an argument that could be made, but this "his voice sounds too radioy and now I can't listen to him at all!" thing sounds pretty hyperbolic

Oh, wow I never thought of it like that. Seriously, I just said these are NOT the be all end all of things (in fact I stress this every time I post test results). But clearly you know better. Obviously, knowing around what food value terran infantry starts to overtake gateway units is clearly useless, because you never actually come upon such situations in the game. I will no longer muddy up the thread with my clearly pointless testing results since you never actually have blobs of units attacking other blobs of units in starcraft.
I used to watch every one of day[9]'s videos, and since he started doing that wearing a collared shirt thing I can't stand him and haven't watched him at all.
that's pretty much why FF fucks up zerg and is only moderately effective against terran. the closest thing zerg has to a bioball is a big blob of hydras, but that's a lot easier to counter than MMG until broodlords/ultras come into play(which is not often). So you add in sturdier roaches, and then oops you just got force fielded in two because roaches only have 3 range. There is really no way to avoid this unless you have burrow roaches and you drain all the sentries energy on FFs while still having 'enough' roaches because they are sure to have an obs around by the time you get fully upgrades roaches.
