Font Issue

On certain websites, in both Firefox and IE, fonts are acting very strangely. The spacing is uneven; some letters are mashed together, while some have a mile in between characters.

An example:

It's not every site; Lifehacker was the one where I first noticed it. I've checked my font size settings in both browsers, and everything appears to be fine. On the sites that I have the issue, even entering text into text boxes and captchas gives me the weird spacing issues.

I'm running the latest version of FF and IE on my Windows XP machine. The only thing of note that I've done recently was install an all-in-one fax/copier/printer on this laptop.

Any thoughts on what the problem might be?
