I've been experimenting with MF this week, and I openly admit that closers are terrifying. A Kat is pretty much the only solomid that's been able to tear me up. I had her down to below half hitpoints by level 6, at which point she shunpoed on to me, did her swirly thing, and I promptly blew up.

i jungle. that is where udyr shines. start with cloth armor and 5 pots, or 2 pots and ward if you want to, you'll probably need to b before you finish your first clear if you only have 2 pots on SR.
you can do the standard, golem and on down, or go wraths (smite the big wraith), golems (once you kill the first golem, you'll hit lvl 2, get turtle and finish the 2nd golem in turtle), wolves (kill them all in turtle), then your smite will be back up, you should have 1 turtle, 2 phoenix, and you can take golem and liz. this is slightly slower, but you don't need to worry about getting ganked at blue.
now, as far as your first trip back, get boots 1, unless you can finish a heart of gold or mandred's razor. right here things split. a lot of people suggest getting HoG first. it is a great item. i've done it this way, but i'll be honest, i have a raging clue for wriggles lantern, it is a phenomenal item, but i digress.
item build. i often will go ahead and get wriggles complete after a HoG, this makes killing dragon way easier, or you could just hold the razor to potentially make bloodrazor later. anyways, the first big item you make is randuin's. probably one of, if not then, best item in the game for udyr. then you'll want to make banshee's, or maybe force of nature, i suggest banshee's. for boots, anything but sorc or mobility has uses, i leave that up to you, if in doubt, merc treads on SR and tabi on TT.
so there is the main item build i use for my jungle udyr, he plays best as tanky, i get (wriggles), treads, randuins, banshees. this gives you enough defense and health to get in and stun people with bear and pop phoenix/turtle and do some auto attacking. after these items i'd probably go for ghostblade, trinity, or b.f. sword item. you could do mallet i suppose.
masteries, 0/21/9, or the build i personally use, 0/14/16. in utility, you want the increased XP, neutral buff duration, and i really like the extra run speed.
for runes you can do armor or magic pen reds, whichever you have. dodge yellow, i suppose you could do flat armor well, but udyr gets some extra dodge from his passive. mana/5/lvl or MR/lvl blue, i have been using MR/lvl. i use flat HP quitns, you could do armor/magic pen, or move speed as well.
so there is a quick udyr guide. this will not replace gameplay experience, udyr is hard to learn and will have mana issues early.
been playing TT with him though, and since it is almost always all melee, i go wriggles, tabi, randuin's and then it's all like, lol. did get messed up by mundo, trynd, morgana though

Try this route. It is safe, seems to be fast, and the timing is almost perfect for first b having enough gold for a razor. I've been trying to extend it to get boots 1 too, but am shy 50-100 gold.
Golems->Wolves->Golem->Wraiths->Golems again (they will be back up)->Wolves again
This will put you at around 670 gold, at which point I used to b and wait a couple seconds for the razor. To extend it, I've been going Lizard->Wraiths again. At this point nothing has respawned on my side and I am still short gold for boots 1. I haven't figured out what to do here when there isn't an obvious ganking opportunity.
The only downside to the above for me is that at level 23 I need to take smite, clarity as my summoner skills. The clarity is really only needed for the first time getting blue buff, and often helps in getting dragon early without my hp dropping low. I'd like to be able to drop it.
Well I gave HoN a try... between the shitty player base, painfully generic graphics, and unintresting heroes, I couldn't get into.
Just started playing LoL yesterday, and allready I'm digging it far more then I ever did HoN! My first game was 12 kills and 1 death! Gragas is like fucking handcrafted for my playstyle. I love the guy!

well, i run smite/ghost on SR and smite/flash on TT (should probably stick with smite/ghost), but if that route works for you, then do it, i won't tell you otherwise, but i don't honestly see the point of jungling if you aren't going to get the buffs early. if you don't take it, someone else will. also, udyr with golem/liz is a really good ganker, udyr without buffs will probably only scare people way.
i can keep up in level early while jungling, and if the 2v2 lane is especially lame, i can even out level them.

I was confused by your line about maybe not having enough money for the razor on your first trip back, and figured that your route was forcing you to b early. No worries if it isn't though.

no, i was only saying that for people who may not be proficient junglers yet. going from laning to jungling is a whole new thing to learn.

I got lost following your order for a sec. We need to set up rules for Golems vs Golems. We should start using red and blue. Kill golems, get blue, kill wolves, wraiths, red, golems. etc...
Also, has anyone mapped out runtime for these? I'm curious to how much time you loose running from one camp to the other and what the fastest path would be.
So, is it blue buff as first kill or the two golems near the lane?
golem = blue, golems = the 2 golem creeps.
so for his order, kill the 2 golems first.
Yeah. I like going that way because it feels safer. I'm level 2 with a point in turtle and phoenix before I get blue buff. It also has been pretty rare that somebody will ward golem, and taking blue at 2:30 or whenever instead of right at 1:55 avoids that first check that some teams will make.
I dunno what is wrong with me today, but the game I was just in as Tristana I got absolutely destroyed by Jax and Nidalee any time I even went near them. Like, to the point where I just ran when I saw them.

last game i played on SR, i went wraiths, popping the blue one with smite, then small golems, wolves, blue. smite was back up for blue. it worked better than i thought, but was slower due to finishing the second small golem and wolves with turtle so that i was full HP and mana for blue. i think i was lvl 3 for blue as well, which helped, but it might have been 2. i think if i do it and there is an enemy jungler, i will go with cloth armor, 2 pots, and a ward for my golem, to be sure it doesn't get ganked.

My usual route for jungling is golems (smite) --> wolves --> blue (smite.) I find that if I try to get all three camps in, smite sits off cooldown for way too long. Most junglers will have that second smite up either right as they engage blue, or at worst (best, maybe?) a few seconds into the fight.
Also, you'll get level 3 if you do all three small camps only if the dude midding doesn't leech xp from wraiths, otherwise you're just a little bit short. I find that the wraith camp in general is the worst out of the camps for total XP early on, so I usually don't prioritize it.
when i did it, i nicely asked mid not to take the xp, and the obliged. so, as udyr, i did the 3 small camps, and got to golem right around the time smite came off CD. but really, you could beat this to death. just do what works effectively for you.
I dunno what is wrong with me today, but the game I was just in as Tristana I got absolutely destroyed by Jax and Nidalee any time I even went near them. Like, to the point where I just ran when I saw them.
Jax is great at closing distance, which is not something you want as a ranged carry. One on one, yeah, you should usually just run from Jax as Tristana.
