So has anyone here who played and quit FFXI tried this game yet? Any good/bad comparison points so far?
I quit FFXI years ago (after playing for years) and I'm really curious as to how this one compares.
I played FFXI on and off for 6 years.
Here's my thoughts so far.
How this is BETTER than FFXI:
- The game is gorgeous. It is seriously pretty if your machine can handle it (mine can).
- Crafting is MUCH more intuitive... Even though people are having some issues, there are vast vaaaast improvements (You can see visible skill gains EVERY time you craft, for the most part; guildleves allowing FREE skillups and you get some item(s) for completing them, you are actually given recipes frequently)
- Don't have to go to Mog House to change
- Lots of local/regional leves (think WoW "daily quests") give a good alternative to the FFXI grind
- Teleporting to various camps/spots much easier than finding a teleporter in Jeuno - Travel is substantially easier/quicker, for the most part
- Variable party size (Can support up to 15, allegedly)
- YOU CAN SOLO IF YOU WANT TO!!!! :O
- They are issuing at least one patch a week, so they are visibly trying to make the community happy
How this is WORSE than FFXI (or WoW, etc):
- NO AUCTION HOUSE
- NO MAILBOXES
- No chocobos yet
- Menu/UI latency ("lag") is pretty god-awful
- Very little info known about WHERE to level with a big group (We had 6 people and couldn't find an area that was "just right" at all)
- No info about "end game" stuff at all
- Nobody is an "expert" yet, so some questions as to how to spec, etc are simply a matter of guesswork
Thank you- that was a great answer. I'm seriously missing my FFXI friends and am thinking about joining this game.
Are there any (retail release) gameplay videos you (or anyone) would recommend? I want to see what I'm getting into, if at all possible.
i'm starting to have serious doubts about the roegadyn i rolled, they're just too big, it's like "well, my characters back is looking good today, i can't see anything else that's going on but oh well"
So I really doubt it since it's new, but is there a trail for this?
I mean, I'll probably buy it anyways since I buy every god damn MMO that's released it feels like, but I wouldn't turn down the chance to play it first.
*EDIT* And a question: Would I be able to play the same account on my PC and my PS3? The idea of being able to screw around doing solo stuff on my big screen and then get on my comp for team activities makes me happy.

Every collector's edition came with one buddy pass that would let a buddy play the game for 30 days free. some people here may still have one available for you. The game itself gives you the first month free (still need to buy the game itself though)
Outside that there is no free trial yet.
*Edit* Should be able to use the same account I would imagine. Noone knows much about the PS3 version yet though. But I know you could use the same account in FFXI for the PS2 and PC with no issues.

The closest thing we got to a free trial was the open beta.
I suspect we'll see a "friend trial" eventually, but right now you could always beg someone for their friend code (different from the friend trial in that it lets you create an entirely new an valid account and they only got one with the collector's edition).
But you will need the physical discs to install the client. SE doesn't provide digital downloads.

I hoped it would be for me as well.
Apparently taking an overload at school and a game internship and a game projects class for no credit just to help out = NO FREE TIME EVARRRR.

That's the idea. Right now content starts to peter out at around rank 30.
There's not much motivating me to go for extreme depth. If we get not-Jeuno in sometime in the next few months I'll dive in and max thm/conj and one or two synthesis jobs, but until that happens my plan is just to slowly level everything.
maybe someone here can figure this out, so my laptop is a Dell XPS 16 i believe runs Aion and AoC on max, its a beast. it meets minimum specs, and on can you run it ( whatever that site is) I meet everything.
Everytime I try booting up patcher it goes straight to: Final Fatasy 14 has stopped working ( running windows 7) someone have any advice know how to make this work ?

A quick search shows two possible solutions.
If you have an ATI card try Catalyst 10.9
If you are processor over-clocked try bumping the voltage a hair.
If you wreck your computer messing with over-clocking settings don't blame me. I am not the one over-clocking your hardware.

running on a laptop, Catalyst I tried 10.9 got nothing, and not gonna over-clock, just annoying as hell this laptop runs everything in the world and Final fantasy I cant even boot the patcher.
How do you assign skills to the ctrl+# and alt+# bars?
Macros! Go to your menu, choose configuration and select Macros. There are two tabs at the top, one for Alt one for Ctrl. Each row corresponds to one bar. If you hold Ctrl or Alt and press up or down you can cycle through the rows as you are running around.

FFXI off-and-on-er here too, echoing pretty much this. I'm finding XIV is much, much friendlier to playing in short bursts; get in, run a few leves, get rewards and get out at the drop of a hat. Auto HP regen out of combat is a big plus, and so far I haven't noticed any penalties for dying (I wasn't watching XP closely, so I'm not 100% sure on this). XIV's still in the early stages, so some headaches don't surprise me too much. As long as stuff in the second column gets addressed eventually, I'll deal with it.
But it is a very, very pretty game and I'm having fun with it so far. Finally got into Wutai; Lloyd Stolls at [strike]Aht Urhgan[/strike] Ul'Dah.
Quick dumb question, since I didn't see it in the controls: is there a hotkey to switch between single and area-effect modes for spells?

I figured as much.
One of my friends was asking "How's the end game content?"
The game came out less than a week ago, NOBODY is there yet, so there isn't any to my knowledge.
That being said, I'd prefer more effort being put into improving the starting experience, not the ending right now. I don't plan to grind to 50 ASAP; I'd prefer things like menu latency and all that getting fixed first.
Also, have you found a levelling guide similar to Campsitarus?

I'm playing with a controller, and the toggle (during the targetting phase/purple circle) is the same key as "queue ability for battle regime." I think that is "g" or "l" on the controller?

While talking about amassing gil, somebody mentioned starting a bank.

I have ~160k I'm not really doing anything with atm (besides trying to buy more lightning crystals). I know most of us have a policy of doing craft work for free/mats for LS members (myself included) so I'm not quite sure what to do with it.
Is there some part of the market we should be investing in? For now I'm just hording it and waiting for the inevitable super-expensive tradeskill mat to appear. Maybe instead we should be strong-arming something, like shields for example, by buying them all up and re-selling, or cornering the market on a certain material, say Fish Glue?
Alright, so I played all day and had a pretty good time. I started out as a miner, switched to botany, and finished the evening as a pugilist. I'm rank 10 mining, rank 7 botany.
I accumulated a variety of crap. If anyone in the shell needs copper, yellow copper, or tin ore, bone chips, rock salt, ash or arrow wood pieces let me know tomorrow. I also have an assortment of other crap that I just have bits and pieces of, no stacks. Some bee chips, feathers, an iron sand, some fishing bait etc etc.
I haven't decided if I want to take up an actual synth trade, since it seems there is a lot of that going on in the shell already.
Tomorrow I will try and find my way out to the rank 10 mining area and see if I can't mine up some stuff that is more useful to where the LS crafters seem to be.

Broke down and picked up this game. I'm not yet done with the tutorial quests, but I'm having a good time! Had to call it quits though.

I can't find that catgirl to save my life! I just finished the part where you emote the miners to death, and then went to the Gate of Nald to meet her. This resulted in about half an hour of desperatly running around the gate trying to find her.
