I just defragged my hard drive (first time in a while) and there's been a couple issues. Most important to me right now is that the privilege system (Vista) is screwed up for some files; some Word files (most annoyingly Normal.dotm) are either corrupted or hidden behind admin walls. This shouldn't be happening, right?
EDIT: And look at that, the excel file I use to organize everything I do at uni is unavailable to me. Help!
Sounds to me like the files were switched to a different index location. You can take manual control of a file or directory through the Security tab.
Right-click the file or folder in question.
Go to Properties.
Click the Security Tab at the top.
Where it says "For special permissions or advanced settings...", just click Advanced near the bottom.
Find your logon name in the list of users, highlight it, then choose Edit at the bottom. (Ensure the checkbox is checked), then hit apply on the next screen. It should take control of the file.
If for some reason this doesn't work, (Something tells me it won't, it's just an idea), then you've got actual damage to the drive...OR...Windows is just being Windows. Try a System Restore to a few days ago.
What program did you use to defrag? That seems a really strange problem to have. Defragging has been a pretty safe activity since about Windows 2000. With the Windows defragging API you should be able to unplug your computer during the process and not have any file system damage.
