I'll try to create a forest and create a supply shaft where I'll be dropping wood into.
"Vernes' Morning Wood Delivery Shaft"
It will be a glorious construction that will inspire the hearts of any hardworking man.
I just hope I plunched my shaft into the UnderDark at a fortuitous location.
Time will tell I guess...
When carts work in SMP, you can enjoy a rollercoaster ride on my shaft, joy!
No monsters on multiplayer, so no need to worry. I was on underdark last night (EvilMonkeySlayer).
I'm working on my goonies cave + pirate ship, just gathering resources.. but soon, oh so soon. (plus I need to rewatch the goonies to get an idea of the general shape I need)
I think that may be adversely affected by my purchase of Civ 5 though.

The only thing I would want now would be to even out the water in the moats, but that would take a lot of water generating tiles. It's passable as it is - at least there's no dry squares.
Edit: oh yeah, and adding cloud rings near to the top. That would probably best be served with wool, though, which I also don't have access to.
When you say Zelda tower, is this something on the Rapture/Columbia server? Because if not, you just gave me the idea to see if the floorplan of the Tower of Hera is doable with minecraft resources.
Let's see. 24 wide, 24 high plus 9 in one spot for an outer staircase, 6 floors at height 5 + 1. Hmm. It can be done, but it isn't very tower-like. Maybe the floors need higher ceilings.
I started excavating a mountain, but then I found a small inconspicuous hole in the ground nearby.
I went down there. Inside was a shaft so deep I saw no bottom and a waterfall pouring down into the abyss.
I had to make it my new home. I started with a spiral staircase snaking around the waterfall. I finally reached the bottom where the waterfall branched off into several underground rivers.
I found a hole going even goddamn deeper into the bowels of the earth, but a skeleton was taking potshots at me from the darkness. I came back later, armed with steel armor and a large pile of torches. God damn does this cave go on forever! I found gold, diamonds and a lava flow. Then I got bumrushed by skeletons and died. Going back there soon to kick them out but first I need to build a decent stair there. I got so goddamn lost the first time.
so i got past the "schmuck" phase of my run, wandering around half the continent to find my house only to give up and respawn when i had all the necessary materials for a compass right there
so now my modest little underground shack has a little door in the back, and two very long tunnels
one tunnel leads into the bowels of the earth, where i can get all the stone, coal, and iron i need
the other leads right into the center of a small mountain

I wish I could play Minecraft right now.
At work behind a proxy that has a huge database of undesired websites to keep me away from.
Provided you've purchased a copy of the game, this is easily alleviated. Just copy your .minecraft directory from wherever your OS puts application data, and bring it via USB key to your work PC, along with the corresponding minecraft.exe launcher.
When you attempt to log in, it'll fail due to being able to contact the server, but because you have all the resources downloaded (via the .minecraft directory copy) you can play in offline mode.
I wanted to share a little story, just as a means of having an example of how quickly you can be diverted without knowing it.
On the SMP Server I have running, I found a little cave with coal and was strip mining it for coal and stone, as I was building an above-ground fortress and using all the stone to do so. After a bit, I start hearing zombie groans, so my focus quickly switches to trying to dig down to see where they are.
Eventually I find the spawn room, and after a bunch of trial and error, figure out how to kill the zombies (I really hope the next update to come is damage for mobs in SMP). There are two chests in the room, and also, the moss covered stone. So, I glance in the chests quickly to drop some extra dirt I'm carrying from the trek in and start ripping up the stone, figuring I'd use it for something.
As I do this, I accidentally clip the stone I'm standing on. Boom. Huge cavern below, I drop straight down, and land in the middle of a room with dual waterfalls and lava falls. I find some diamonds, make a diamond pick, and mine some obsidian, before deciding just to start digging a tunnel out. On the way up, I run into another spawn room, which I strip down for the stone again.
After I get all the way back to my structure and dump some of the stuff I've been carrying around into a chest do I realize that I have no idea where the first spawn room was, and that there is a record sitting in one of the chests still........ the next couple days are going to be me going through all the caves that are nearby to find that damn room again.
This game is awesome.

Aargh, lesson learned. Don't play windowed if you have a light colored desktop background. I've got screen burn-in on my fucking retinas now. Whenever I close my eyes I see the outline of the Minecraft window floating inside the rectangle of my screen. Sure hope this goes away soon.
Man I am impressed that any of you can get your servers working
none of my friends can connect to each other, no matter who hosts, even with open ports, dmz, whatever. Everyone just keeps getting socket errors or stream ending errors.
One of my friends doesn't even show up on my server log when he attempts to join, sometimes.

All the stone, coal, and iron you need, you say? With every underground expedition, you will be forced to dig deeper. And deeper.
I've been trying to avoid any info outside of the "how to survive night one" video, and I did watch the redstone logic-gate vid, but last night I found some seeping red stone that took a while to beat up, and didn't produce anything. Do i need a better pick for this?
Everytime I see a screenshot with a new item, I get so excited. I saw those metal torches in the OP, and now I can't wait to find some metals to try and make it.

Yeah, you need at least an iron pick, I believe, to get redstone, gold, or diamond.
The short version is that you need an iron pick or better to mine redstone.
In other news, I've decided to go through with my idea to build the Tower of Hera. I have some space marked out on a cliff near Columbia, but it should be far enough away that it won't interfere with future expansion. Maybe a project planner for Columbia can take a look? I've got signs posted and cobble boundaries set up.
Edit: I just had an idea - I could convert the Moldorm boss area into a spleef arena!
The metal torches are normal torches but a texture pack has been applied to change their appearance.

Minecraft's performance would like a word with you too.
I'm pretty sure that Minecraft's performance problems are due to it being written in Java. I have no idea how it actually works, obviously, but at an educated guess, the game is (outside of mob pathfinding and such) a cyclical search-and-update algorithm. Outside of player interaction the world is relatively steady-state. Plant edge voxels have to be updated to see if they grow or throw out new plants to nearby squares, but the game demonstrably doesn't check the physics on every voxel and I don't think you can gen a world that has water or lava outside of a meta-stable state (either it's settled or it's flowing into a full 7-square radius where nothing new is going to happen until the player arrives and fucks it up). So you have a relatively small list of voxels that need to be checked every cycle, to which are added voxels for the blocks a player adds/removes and any adjacent voxels, to take care of spreading liquids and physics on falling/removed objects. This isn't really that big of a task, in most cases, but Java isn't ideal for optimized searching. Written in C++ by someone reasonably good at optimizing algorithms I'm pretty sure Minecraft could run on anything with enough RAM to hold the world volume and a good enough GPU to render it.
Let's see... the world is something like 150 blocks tall, right? A default, newly-generated world is a little over 3MB. So it appears that the game generates a cube of 150x150x150 with each voxel represented by a byte. Probably one bit is used to tag a voxel as needing an update next cycle with the other 7 dedicated to remembering what kind of block it is. It's been a while since I wrote anything in Java, but barring some kind of magic he's probably just storing the whole thing as a 3-dimensional array. Array access in Java is dramatically slower than C++. In an application where array access is basically the whole show, that's a problem.

obviously i'll have to go spelunking again sooner or later, but for now my needs are being very adequately met

Seems feasible. Controls are not too complicated for a smartphone, and most smartphones can already run Java.
Of course, it would be the end of workplace productivity as we know it.
Limited memory would be a problem.
