I've been running my own little classic server for a while, but the things you guys have going here look pretty awesome. Would love to hop on and take a look around, and maybe help out with a bit of building. Haven't bought alpha yet, but probably will this evening.
I had a random map generated the other day that had a huuuuuge cave with an opening approx 40 blocks high and 20 or so wide. I instantly ran up to the opening and stopped moving. "WTF" said I. The opening was only 1 block deep but because it was so high and wide it created a black shade in the opening part making it look like a cave.

That is where your house should be. It has been foretold.
I'm watching this wondering wtf he's talking about and admiring this unbelievably complicated design, and then there's a pig and cow jumping up and down.
I hope this guy never teaches, because holy crap is he boring.

Does the computer actually need to be that big or was that just for show?
Well, I bought the game so I can mess around with the map files. I'm reading up on the NBT format and writing translators. Oh, someone has beaten me to it. On to the next step, I guess.

How beefy does a pc need to be to run a server?

Jesus. I made the ALU for my computer architecture class. It was a very tedious process, but even then, my job was much easier than his. I had a Hardware Description Language to use as a bridge from the instances of hardware being used and me. This guy is mapping it out basically in schematic.

Ugh.
With the periodic break to mine out more materials to build it out of.

He used a map editor, he didn't have to do much.
Oh, he did? I missed that part. While still ridiculous, that is somewhat less ridiculous. So why's his floor a patchwork of dirt, stone, and cobbles if it's edited?

Because the dirt, stone and cobbles were there? He used the map editor to scoop out the land he needed and then put in the ALU, he probably had to make a few manual edits but for the most part it was made in a map editor. Read his description.
Edit:
This is the first part of a planned 16-bit computer that will run entirely in minecraft. That computer will be "Hack" compatible, which is to say that it'll run code meant for the Hack machine described in The Elements of Computer Systems (an awesome book that you should look up if you are at all interested in how computers work).
Some more info:
The design was drawn up in an awesome program called Redstone Simulator (does what it says on the tin), which was written by Baezon on the Minecraft Forums http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtop...
MCEdit ( http://minecraftforums.net/viewtopic.... ) was used to help clear off space and import the design into minecraft. Hours of experimenting with prototypes, modifications to the design, and debugging took place in the game itself, however.
This project is far from over. Memory, here I come...

He probably just took out the cube he was working in. The rest of the world is still generated.
If he builds memory, I think he should have a memory cache. Build main memory WAY out so it takes like 100 cycles to get the results of a read from main memory back, and put a two-way set associative cache nearby.
I think I want to help him build it.
Also, at the current exchange rate, Notch is up over $3.5 mil USD in sales now.

How do I make cartographer render my current save? I'm trying to dig a tunnel from one outpost to another, but I fear I've misjudged things.
If you have a prior save that you haven't renamed in the default folder it will overwrite it with the new map when you do it. If you don't have the above it just puts the image in the folder as is normal.
Craftable sonar or dowsing rods would be cool. I like stumbling onto dungeons randomly and all, but when I end up digging straight down to bedrock without finding much more than some coal and a little iron, the game gets a tad dull.

What's the easiest way to produce a bunch of gunpowder/tnt? I assume there's no way to get it other than from creepers?
Farm Creepers
Cheat with InvEdit
That's basically it.
Dungeons have it too, but good luck finding them.
I probably found 1 TNT's worth of gunpowder in my last main world through dungeon chests. And I found enough dungeons to build a giant Mossy Cobblestone Creeper. While it is possible, I wouldn't characterize it as easy ;-)
Mobkillers like this work pretty good as well.
(Mobkiller Movie)
Will the mobs just walk into the water though? Or is the idea to build this in a cave where the mobs will spawn and drop into it directly? Will it work to make this on the surface in some random place and then just leave it in the dark?

mobs will walk everywhere, even if it kills them. I guess, if you're going for dangerous monster-type mobs, then a cave (or anywhere dark) would work. You could even use yourself as bait to lure them in. Gotta watch out for Creepers blowing up your stuff though!
It's nothing special compared to some of the crazy things I see floating around but I worked surprisingly hard on it so I thought I'd throw it up for you guys to judge :P
I dub it Hellscream Harbour, took about 3-4 hours to build and all the materials were gathered by hand and has a foundation of dirt with a layer of planks on top as well as a torch on every square.
So I've been messing around in single player quite a bit, but I'd like to check out the awesomeness of SMP... here's my Steam profile if I can get an invite:

It seems like it could be smaller.
It probably could be smaller to do the basics its currently doing, but he'll want that room to grow to do some of the additions he's talking about.
If he actually used three dimensions (up/down, wires crossing) it could be way more compact.

Depends on how many people you want to support. An average PC (by today's standards) can maybe support up to 20 people in a Minecraft server.

I was just on it. I think it was full, and it was really laggy. Lost connection to it.
