Hey, I have a question. A stupid question.
I can't find a list of the commands in the game, and I can't figure out warp points and stuff (like, for making a personal server for friends). Is there a command list or something? And is there a way to set multiple warp points as an individual player, or does that have to be done by the host? How would I go about doing either of those? I have a feeling the answers are really obvious, but for the life of me I can't get any answers out of Google.

The server that I am running is modded. The /warp commands, and a bunch of others, are not in the default multiplayer game.
If the server host makes you a mod, or gives you permission to set warp points, you will be able to. You can actually do this on a user-by-user basis with the mod I've got.
I kind've really want to disable warping so as to force all of you to build the most spectacular transit system ever between the islands. It would help with learning the landscape, too. However, the map's just so damn enormous that I think I might be murdered if I do that.

Thanks, Ein! That's exactly what I was looking for.
And once minecarts get working, I imagine it would be pretty awesome to disable most of the warps. Make it into more of a real, breathing world.
I think an above-ground boat and canal system would be nice, as long as you line the walls with half-step blocks that slow boats without breaking them, so people don't end up stranded just because they bumped a wall.

I think we'll end up building roads anyway, after the initial scramble to claim land/build a house subsides.
Yeah, if mine carts get up and running all you would really need is warp home and Columbia.
We probably wouldn't even need Warp Columbia. We'd have a skyrail set up in that city in no time, and probably a main station... and we could just pipe a mine cart in from the mountain edges around the field to that station.

If minecarts ever reach the same level as their SP functionality then that's really all you need. One two-cart infinite loop booster can carry you miles, up and down hills, wherever, it don't matter none.
Plus you could set them up in advantageous ways that show off the various structures and creations. It'd be like an unguided tour of our minds while you wait to arrive.

Yeah I need to get involved with Colrap cause single player is starting to grate on me, and I am realizing how fruitless all my work is when being done just for myself.
Any way someone can throw me the address in a PM? I hear ein is full on PMs and I don't have any steam account set up cause its on my old HD for a desktop comp (which I dont have, just my laptop right now)

Don't be so sure. I spent HOURS building a tunnel from spawn point to my mountain fortress in single player. I have ideas for travel which would work quite well in your server, assuming I had help in actually building it all as it'll be a herculean undertaking connecting everything.
My thought was basically to create a water slide transit system to cross large areas. I'd think it'd work well for inter-continental travel on your server. It'd be a bit unsightly for travel across a continent (I'd prefer a rail system there) but I think it'd be cool for crossing oceans (you can seem to get ships going pretty damn fast).
Really though, for this we would need to double up on the work. We'd need a dedicated "lane" to a continent and a dedicated "lane" back. You couldn't go back and forth on the same "lane" with what I have in mind.
Also, we'd have to create a hub mid-ocean to branch out in different directions.
Like I said, it'd be a LOT of work and I'm unsure if my girlfriend would appreciate me spending all my free time on it :P

Oh and regarding Columbia, why exactly hasn't anybody set up a waterfall elevator yet?
I'm finally caving into the pressure to get Minecraft, but paypal has decided that as I don't trust them after they screwed me out of 680$ on an ebay sale (seller shipped a box full of shredded paper and because he fucking had a tracking number I was the one who was trying to scam him) they won't let me buy this.
So I go hey I've got an Amex gift card with more then enough to get this on it, I'll just not sign into my paypal account...but paypal won't take it as a valid card but is more then happy to bill $1.00 to the card...Transaction failed my ass.
Yeah awesome so I won't be getting minecraft now. Fuck paypal.

Because the city looks better when nothing from it is touching the ground, and the fact that /warp Columbia takes you to a Zeppelin that you jump out of to reach the city.

I put enough iron in the warehouse last night to make 1000+ railroad tracks. So we could get started on building a depot if nothing else.
Man, the server's at 25/24 and I'm not even on. The extra one is because the mods get reserve spots, lol.
I could uncap it more, I guess. Server stability on the new map has been gorgeous after the first couple hiccups.
Im trying to start up a server and am wondering how powerful a machine has to be to get 24 people on at once? The machine im planning to use is pretty old and I'd like to have room to let more people on if it becomes popular.

The "server" I'm using is my previous gaming PC. I built a new one when the power supply and GPU in the thing started to fail. When I figured I'd use it for a server, I just chucked a new power supply in there and a cheap replacement graphics card, and off it goes.
4GB ram, Intel Core 2 Quad (2.66GHZ) and a simple, cheap 1TB 7200 RPM drive from Hitachi.
Hardware-wise, I could probably put it up to 30 people without an issue. I think the bigger problem is the internet connection. Clocking it, I've gotten anywhere between 20 MB/down and 3 MB/up per second to 10 down and 1 up. I'm just running off residential cable, heh.

Hmm ive got a good internet connection but my comp id be using as the server is 2.0ghz P4, 1gb ram, and like an 80gb HDD. since i've got nothing better to do with it I may as well play around with it and see how it fairs.

Hey guys, helpful note, and something I'm noticing.
If I'm saying I'm about to restart the server, and all 25 of you /warp or /home or wherever the fuck you seem to want to go, it's really bad. When I tell the server to stop, it starts saving locations and chunks, and if you're moving from one to the other when that happens you run the risk of possibly losing your shit or worse, not being able to log in.
Seriously, I announce I'm going to restart, and every single one of you starts warping around the map. Cut it out. :P It'll be there when we get back.

I know bank cards work, as well you can have someone buy it for you, you know.

Answer: Move the warps continually further away, remove them one at a time, easier routes / shorter distances first. As a minecart network builds, it'll expand to fill the map and the warps will be less necessary.
If at any point it starts to become an annoyance, you can just... stop.

Imagine a special "tour" line, with a choice of multiple stops, that makes its way to most of the cool features on the map.
"This cart to freebuild island."
"This cart to wangs town"
etc.
