Re: construction projects, what do people use (if anything) to plot out their blueprints ahead of time? UncleSporky recommended zoomed-in MS Paint with the grid turned on and that worked to a degree until I upgraded to Win 7 and now none of the brushes are square shaped and I'm dissatisfied again.
Another good free MSPaint-like program is GraphicsGale. Takes a bit of getting used to but I find it easier than stuff like Gimp.
Actually, can't you still use the basic pencil for one pixel drawing? Or you like doing big square sections?
It will be much much harder to build light if it requires iron.
Well, it sounds like torches will still be in the game, yeah? They just won't last forever.
But yeah, that's a lot of iron, especially considering I have hundreds of torches lighting my tunnels.
Yeah, it would be a lot, even if they give off more light. Of course that accomplishes Notch's goal of making the depths more dangerous, as you'd have to spend significant resources to survive in deep cave systems. Combine that with Notch's desire to make monster spawns a function of depth (the lower you go, the brighter it will have to be to prevent them from spawning), and it could make for some very harrowing exploration.
I'd like to see iron become just a little more common, that would ease the blow with requiring it for permanent lighting. And add another step in the process, finally add chain mail in and make it require steel.
Steel could be: Smelt an iron block (9 iron), get 3-4 steel ingots. Then you could have an intermediary step between iron and diamond. Steel would still be an investment, but still easier to get than having to search the dangerous depths for hard-to-find diamond.
I'm just joining the party. Where do you go to read up on news about new and upcoming updates, the official forums or is there a twitter feed or whatever?
Does the dirt have to fill the 5x5 space you left for the tree or can you just drop 1 dirt in the middle of a 5x5 space and grow from that?
Trees will grow from a single block of dirt, PROVIDED it has sufficient light and space to grow. Also keep in mind that trees have a chance to grow into big trees, and if a particular sapling decides it wants to be a big tree, it may not grow if it doesn't have sufficient space to do so (even if a normal tree would fit into the space you've provided).

Do you have to plant sapplings on top of non-grassed dirt?

No, I am not really communist. Yes, it is weird that I use this name.

Just finished a new addition to Columbia. An interpretation of this building, with help from Rockfish!
Gentlemen, I give you the Patriot Arch!
A totally free-flying, untethered piece of architecture in Columbia. It has the same sort of 'turbine-balloon' arrangement we set up on the other buildings, since rockets aren't really something we can make. We tried using lava for the effect, it looks like shit after you encase it in glass.
It has a fully furnished interior, but some of you might be wondering "How do I get inside?"
Well, this is why the Patriot Arch is also known as the Home of the Brave. As a roving piece of architecture, it doesn't have an solid walkways in or out. There is, however, an access ramp towards the base of one side for docking that you might just catch it you take a leap of faith.

At my native resolution single pixels are a bit smaller than I care to work with, even at maximum zoom level. I might just get used to that though.
I'll take a look at GraphicsGale when I get home. Thanks!
I wish I understood how water works. I want to lead a river a decent distance to fill my moat.
You'd have better luck just making a few buckets and carrying some water over and creating an infinite spring or two.
If only buckets worked in multiplayer!
Edit: Yeah, I wish water would flow and fill channels rather than the water level always dropping lower for no reason. There's stone all around! There's nowhere for the water to go!
Is all that stuff in the OP on the same server? Like Columbia/Rapture/Timspork's Barn/Basilica?
Yeah, all of it's on one server.
one AWESOME server.
I didn't know how far above sea level the plains below columbia+local hillside were, so I did a height test on the Tower of Hera foundation. I got about 40-45 blocks up, which ought to be more than enough for the tower interior, especially if I make it like Link to the Past where floor 1 is basement.
Funny story - as I was digging back down the single column I hit a lag spike. I made it down to the ground, the blocks re-appeared, and then exploded and rained dirt cubes down on me.

And inexplicable currents popping up in a single tile.

Water always flows 7 squares from the base of a waterfall. If it goes down a small drop, it flows another 7 squares from that point.
All you have to do to lead a river is go to the furthest extent of the water and dig under the last bit of water to make it flow further. You may need to make a long descending channel to keep this up if the ground isn't already on a downward sort of slope.
If what I read is correct, a water "source" block can spread up to 7 blocks in any direction. If within those seven blocks there's an elevation drop, the water drops into it and acts as a new "source" block, allowing 7 blocks of travel from that new point. To be on the safe side, you would basically have to go down one block for every 6 blocks of lateral water flow.
I could be wrong, but that's more or less how I've seen it work.
The only way to make water of a certain height is through waterfalls. Since a water source has to be placed on top of a solid block, you have to make a layer of solid material, cover it with source water, then mine out the solid blocks you put underneath, resulting in a deep pool.
You could try multiple source tiles, maybe. Make yourself the 2x2 well, put sources in both corners, and you should be able to take water from anywhere and it will refill, and any tiles you take will be source tiles. Fill your pool with those.
Say...10 squares (3 squares larger than the source water spead)
You create your 10 square deep pit, layer the top, and dump your water. Then you break the blocks holing off the rest of the pit. Does the water fill it all up or does it only go 7 squares down?
If so, this could be very awesome.
edit: Rethinking about this it seems like it'll just fill up. Going to test though.

Simply, once this is added the game will change.
Suddenly we will no longer be safe once we've fully lit up a tunnel.

Secret update? Or was this an update last night?
and Notch's twitter (@xnotch)
No
It takes Dwarf Fortress map files and turns them into a Minecraft Map Save.
Awesome.
Edit: Beated by 6 pages. eek.

Good luck doing more strip mining when it is harder to make light.

boy, the Rapture people will have a job of work ahead of them when that update rolls around
It never ends!
It doesn't matter if there is grass there or not.

Current Server - None.
Current Project - Surviving in SSP.
No, I wish. It's just designed to look like it can zoom around and be an arch anywhere in the city.

Let's say, you want a DEEP lake. VERY deep.
Say...10 squares (3 squares larger than the source water spead)

It doesn't always fill up an area, depending on which direction it decides to flow though.
