It falls all the way to the bottom. The only thing to do is make your walls are concave in some areas, then you can have an awesome secret entrance to your underground lair.
I am not going to post the screenshots he showed me, as I am being a dick and asking him to alter what he is doing, but CarbonFire is doing some incredible work on what will hopefull become the next underdark. Expect some epic cave spelunking!

If the forever burning torches goes away so much my stuff will suck....

Personally I would re-engineer it so that it is moderately logical and doesn't involve water just suspended there. I'd make a gap at the bottom where you have to swim up into another cavern (requires more playing with water to make a second inner pool).

I ask that he would make a shaft directly underneath spawn that is entirely made of adminium so that we aren't digging along or building things and all of a sudden it doesn't work. Unbreakable rock gets the point across better.
Is the server down? I was just about to lose my minecraft virginity
The servers are all still up. Unfortunately, minecraft.net is down, which means that no one can log in or authenticate to connect to a multiplayer server.
If you are currently still connected to a minecraft server... Don't Disconnect (or you won't be able to rejoin until Notch brings his website back up).

I was redoing Underdark earlier until I got bored with it.
Are we going to get up to the cloud layer or not? I think it's kind of weird and jarring to be underground and suddenly everything is white.
Also I hope he flattens out the adminium at the bottom too.
He is not actually taking over the design process, rather he is making the base map that I will then modify. I will probably even out the adminium at the bottom if I remember to, because I hate the way it looks too.
So I built a neato mob catching and killing machine... but apparently no mobs spawn in the area. Wish I'd checked that before... maybe I'll just cave and use an editor to add some spawns nearby. I really don't want to relocate this thing.
Will we eventually get to a point where we can carry a torch and it gives off light? Once the 'torches running out' update occurs we'll be less inclined to adorn every cave with the things.

Pretty sure mobs will spawn anywhere where there is grass. I saw a sheep spawn on top of 1x1 floating dirt piece way up in the air today, and plenty of other weird places.
I'm not sure about this part, but it seems to me like they spawn a little more often near torches. I might be way off here, but that's how it appears in my current world.
Also, show us this murder machine, I want to see it!
As far as I know, the only stipulation for monsters to spawn is a dark patch of ground. By dark, it has to not have even a hint of light shining on it (I think).
If you want critters to spawn, you need light and some flat grassland.
My vision of a "killing machine" involved a monster spawn cage on a tiny floating platform, with nowhere for the spawned mobs to go but down into a giant pit of lava/fire.
Speaking of fire, I found out last night on Zetx's server that zombos can indeed be killed. Punching and Swords don't work, but liberal use of the iron+flint to spark fires that ignite them works. They also drop their normal drops when killed, too.

Can I ask what you guys have been using to edit?
NBT Forge - great for large scale editing (done layer by layer)
MCEdit - Good for 3D and chunk editing. Also good at replacing very specific blocks (a lot easier to find then scrolling through 128 layers of a normal Alpha map in Forge :P)
I just made it out alive from the largest dungeon system I've run across yet. Spoilered for long, for it is an epic tale.
I prepared ahead of time; I left my mountain fortress home with fresh metal armor and an extra sword, with pickaxes and shovels to spare, along with a half dozen cooked hams and 128 arrows for my trusty creeper-slaying bow, with dozens of torches and extra wood. I hopped in a boat and sailed across the ocean to a very promising mountain I had seen earlier on.
I found a cave on the side of a mountain and entered to see a naturally occurring massive staircase. It lead to a system of massive black, empty halls filled with naught but darkness and monsters. I worked my way through, building paths across yawning chasms and slaying the occasional creature.
In time, I reached a treasure room which I cleared by mining around the side, opening a small window and swiping at the half-dozen spiders which had shown up inside. The chest inside contained my first record, which I was pleased with.
At this point I had about two dozen metal, the goodies from the chest and a couple gold. I was considering heading back at this point, but as I was cheerfully ripping up the green stone from the treasure room to use later I noticed it connected to another passage leading further down.
I said to myself, "Oh, what the hell, I still have some room. I'll just see where this leads!"
Two hours later I would be bitterly regretting that decision which, I tell you, was not even remotely the same level of regret I was feeling 90 minutes after that.
The passage lead to another sequence of massive caverns. These caverns were huge, at some points you could see down maybe 15 squares or more if you were at the highest point. Massive, sprawling locales filled with side tunnels that looped back on each other, grand halls lit by lava pools glowing beside waterfalls. And treasure! More metal in one cavern than I had ever seen, next to redstone and gold and even diamonds, in some places.
I ran out of shovels, and pickaxes, broke my second sword on a charging zombie, and when I was down to my last dozen torches I sealed myself into a side room and got to crafting. I had to juggle all the treasure I had picked up to make room for all the essentials I had to make again. An hour or so later, having worked my way through all the new stuff, I had to repeat the process.
I was completely lost, of course. One massive lava-lit system just lead into another. I knew where I had been from the torches I left behind, but I kept finding places I hadn't explored. I only really started worrying when I was down to my last dozen arrows; at this point I was carting around more treasure from one trip then I had picked up in 2-3 days of regular exploration. I was terrified at the prospect of dying and losing it all. When I could no longer use my bow I knew at one point I was going to run into a creeper with my name on it. There was no way I could find my way back the way I came, if I could I doubted that I could survive fighting off all the monsters which had invariably respawned from the places I forgot to illuminate, so I just kept pressing on.
I used 3 diamonds to make a good pickaxe and started digging up. I quickly broke into another massive, unexplored lava cavern. I got as high as I could, followed waterfalls up to their sources, burning through the last of my food in the process trying to stay alive. This took some time.
Finally, finally, I entered a new cavern and saw light at one end. At first I thought I had doubled back some how, but as I got closer I realized it was a passage to the surface: one massive vertical shaft maybe 10-12 blocks high. I carved stairs into the side and finally reached the top.
I had ended up right on the edge of the ocean, and I couldn't even see the mountain where I had first entered. I quickly dropped a bunch of stone in a flat square nearby and set some torches on it, then created a workbench to craft both a boat, and a compass. With both in my hands I sailed for home, which took several minutes of travel.
The end result was something like this:
100+ metal, smelted then crafted blocks for room
21 gold
180+ redstone, 3 stacks and change
120+ coal, not counting all the ones I used for forges and torches
13 diamonds
12 obsidian
Green and Yellow records
3 treasure rooms cleared out
I wore through a dozen stone pickaxes and shovels, 3 metal pickaxes, and 25% of my diamond pickaxe by the time I got out. I had 3 hearts at the end with no food or armor left.
The reason why I made the flat square after exiting is so the position would be visible later; I use cartographer to render the world map to help with exploration. Checking later, I would see that I essentially entered the cave system at one end of a continent, and escaped from the very opposite side.
The last funny epilogue: after all that spelunking I decided to spend more time just building up my home. In the process of carving stairs down to make a treasury to store the blocks of metal I made, I broke into a cavern.
Which lead to another...
I haven't worked up the courage to explore that system yet.
I love stories like this, I too have been lost in the underdark of my Single Player Survivor game where the caverns and their wonders never seem to cease. To think, you almost delved too deep and your treasures would never be heard from again... Bravo to your successful adventure and here is hoping for many to come in the future from Notch's wonderful Alpha/Beta/Gold releases!
Will we eventually get to a point where we can carry a torch and it gives off light? Once the 'torches running out' update occurs we'll be less inclined to adorn every cave with the things.
I was way lucky in my current game, I built a tower on the beach on top of my spawn point, dug down and about 30 blocks above the bedrock I hit a cave system that is so vast I still have tons of branches unexplored and I have pulled hundreds of Iron and Coal out of it as well as almost a full stack of gold, no diamonds yet though.

Until we lose our torches in which case it will be epically infected by creatures of the night.
Yeah, not really looking forward to that update, unless it becomes easier to make torches, like maybe an alternative to using coal.
If torches go out after a certain amount of time, then I would like to be able to re-light them with iron/flint. So you could plant a torch. Three days later or whatever it would go out. If you went back by that torch it would still be there just not lit but could be re-lit with the iron/flint. This would allow people to still use torches to explore caves.
Of course there would also need to be a more permanent light source for homes and stuff.
People talking about losing torches, I just wanted to restate this in case it was missed: supposedly when it happens, all existing torches will turn into lanterns (the never ending light source) so that you won't be screwed.
Obviously it will still be harder to make never ending light sources than torches, but it means things aren't instantly going to become really tough. In fact, Notch will probably mention it ahead of time so everyone can plant a thousand torches that get converted for an early stockpile.

That is part of the plan yes.
It just went haywire and is now falling down the stairs.
I'm trying to glass it in so I have a big-ass vertical aquarium. And can use my stairs again.

Although I might throw two sets of Iron Doors on it instead as a sort of pseudo air-lock though.
i warned you about stairs, bro
i told you dogg

Man, that's pretty cool. I think I might end up getting this just to see all the shit you guys have built.
Screenshots don't do it justice, it is amazing.
You should come on in and set up shop! columbia isnt even half as epic as rapture right now
This weekend construction will begin on the greatest combat area in the known world. A place for mortal combat between two people.
A place where two people enter, and one person leaves.
I need to upload this world, because this tunnel system is goddamn epic.
Meh.

I want a mining hat with a light on it.

What is this purple stuff I can't seem to mine it.
Ducks!
Link to the sound mod, and a great duck sprite found off SA.
Obsidian, happens sometimes when lava hits water. I think you can only mine it with diamond picks.
