From what I can make of the FAQ you can still just get them by drops though, which makes it a little pointless. I guess it's just for people who really want a sepcific hat.
I don't have a problem with this. You can still collect the items by getting 6-12 random items a week by playing. This just provides an alternate way to find those items. People are willing to pay for it, though I will probably not purchase money for this. Sorta weird that one cannot trade items that are purchased, guess Valve doesn't want the item economy being capsized.
After all the free updates, Valve has spoiled us. The idea of selling community products (not even official Valve stuff) just sounds like a mistake that will upset and frustrate a LOT of tf2-ers.
EDIT: Oh wait, never mind. If you can still get them in drops, I am ok with it. BUT, the drops for those items will probably be significantly less than the others. (I'd imagine)

Product Update - Valve
Updates to Team Fortress 2 have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:
Team Fortress 2
* Added the Mann-conomy.
o Added 65 new items (hats, weapons, tools, minigames, gifts, crates).
o Added the Mann Co. Store & Catalog.
o Added Trading.
o Added Item customization.
* Additional TF2 features
o Added new auto-team-scramble system:
+ Set mp_scrambleteams_auto to 1 (default) to automatically scramble the teams if the criteria is met
+ Set mp_scrambleteams_auto_windifference to set the number of round wins a team must lead by in order to trigger an auto scramble (default is 2)
o Updated how Spy disguise targets are selected to more randomly distribute the selections
o Fixed the FreezePanel background not using the correct color if you were killed by a player or building on your own team
o Server browser tweaks
+ It will now encourage you to add servers to Favorites or Blacklists after you have a good/bad experience on them.
+ The Server Browser now automatically closes after successfully connecting to a server (opt-out via the Options-Multiplayer->Advanced dialog)
* Achievement tuning
o Demoman achievement "The Stickening" changed to 3 from 5.
o Heavy achievement "Krazy Ivan" changed to 50 from 100.
o Medic achievement "Consultation" changed to 3 from 5.
o Medic achievement "Peer Review" changed to 10 from 50.
o Medic achievement "Placebo Effect" changed to 2 from from 5.
o Medic achievement "FYI I am A Medic" changed to 1 from 5.
o Medic achievement "Family Practice" changed to 5 from 10.
o Soldier achievement "Geneva Contravention" changed to 3 from 5.
o Scout achievement "Strike Zone" now counts assists.
o Scout achievements "Fall Classic" and "Foul Territory" are fixed.
Engine (CS:S, DoD:S, TF2, HL2:DM)
* Added sv_alltalk to the list of convars that are checked for the sv_tags list.
* Fixed a model instance crash.
* Removed engine ConVar "r_ForceRestore"
It sounds awesome.. you can select a person on the opposing team to duel. If they accept, the game tracks how often you kill each other in that match. Whoever wins gets a medal for it.
Fuck yes minigames I love the fuck out of minigames. Also that the purchasable items are also droppable makes this sound extremely reasonable. Also I totally called it earlier this page. Shower me in praise and hats.
Actually the set bonus is not that bad, just the bonus on the degreaser is a whole mess of what the fuck. Whats 10% more damage on bullets when heavies already tear you down almost instantly unless you have complete surprise.

Yes but the gun you have to use doesn't allow you to get headshots.

I don't like that idea. A sniper needs to be able to counter-snipe. That ever so slightly ruins the job of sniping enemy snipers.
so reading through the faq, some key things about the item system now:
trading is in, seems to just be swapsies, doesn't specify hat for a hat, weapon for a weapon
you can 'gift' someone something, meaning it can just be one party offloading
items can be customized now? says details will be in the mann co store, although i think nonpurchased ones will be able to be customized
