So Samsung has decided that one screen on your phone isn't enough, an now you need two... one of which is a narrow ticker on the bottom of the face of the phone. some good and bad decisions on this handheld, for sure...
3.4-inch Super AMOLED primary display, 1.8-inch Super AMOLED secondary "ticker" display.
"Grip sensor" lets you touch the bottom sides of the phone to light up the ticker.
Android 2.1 (ouch).
Bing Maps / Bing Search (double ouch).
Samsung 1GHz Hummingbird processor.
Six-axis sensor + accelerometer.
5 megapixel camera, shoots 720p video.
802.11n WiFi.
8GB microSD card included.
$200 on two-year contract after $100 mail-in rebate.

So, it turns out that the Opera Mobile for Android beta is pretty awesome. The first thing I noticed was that scrolling is incredible smooth compared to the stock browser, especially while loading pages. Need to test more, but this looks promising so far

Partitioning the SD card is what. I can't get the bloody thing right. Went through GParted, sett 1st partition as FAT32: 6.44GB. 2nd partition as ext2:1GB And that should work. Except my phones memory is still going down when I download apps.

Hm... odd. I didn't format or partition mine at all though, just popped it in my phone after deleting all the stuff on it.
Question for all of the Incredible owners. I got mine back in August, and in the last few months, I want to say since Froyo was released, I have had consistent phone reboots whenever I use the Google Maps application. Every. Single. Time. my phone will restart within five to ten minutes of using the app.
I went into Verizon, and they gave me a new phone last week, and so I tried this on a brand new unit with no extra third part apps installed, and the same thing. I downloaded an app to watch the memory usage, and there doesn't seem to be a leak anywhere I can see. There appears to be a debug folder located on my SD card, under a directory named Google Maps, but I am not sure how to turn Debugging on. Has anyone else had this problem? Any speculation on what it might be?
On a side note, I went back into Verizon this morning, and they said that HTC is supposed to be releasing the 2.3 Gingerbread update today. Can anyone else confirm this?
I have a rooted Incredible and I don't have the constant crashes you're getting. As for Gingerbread's release date, a quick google search reveals that it should be coming out within a few days for the Nexus One. No specifics on when it comes out for the Incredible, though
Yeah, also rooted, no crashing problems of any kind that I can think of. I've also gained a non-trivial boost to battery life now that I've ripped all the crapware HTC and Verizon like to pile on (Footprints, CityId and Verizon Apps...BEGONE!).
I don't think we'll be seeing Gingerbread custom ROMs for the Incredible (or any other non-Nexus phone) for a while. I'd venture a guess that we won't see the official HTC release until at least Q1/11 (and knowing HTC, I wouldn't rule out Q2).
Speaking of which, the market app 'App 2 SD' (move app to SD) is pretty useful. Notifies you which apps you have that can be moved to SD.
2.2 only of course
In other news someone just showed me Aedict which is an offline japanese/english dictionary with kanji search. Holy shit I needed this so badly
I've been using JED myself, which I think just uses the same concept as Aedict, though maybe a little faster. Damn useful. But that reminds me. A friend had a cell phone that she could use the camera to scan kanji and find the definition. Wonder if there is anything like that for Android.

There is one, but it was kinda weak when I tried it a long time ago. Lemme see if I can find it again...
And Aedict is awesome! I've been using it for a while now, but it isn't perfect. I've found a few words that it doesn't have, but it's completely free using freely available dictionaries, so I can't really complain. And on the rare occasion it doesn't have something, I still have my trusty electronic one. Never heard of JED, I might look into it.
Edit: Kanji Yomi is the one I've used. Unfortunately I'm running low on interal memory so I can't test it. Goddamn developers need to enable App2SD! :x
Edit 2: It works, but it's really finicky. I think I like Aedict better because it also has the Tanaka example sentences so you can understand the word in context. And it has a built-in kanji drawing recognition feature.
So my Droid X went for a swim last night, and I don't think it's going to make it. I have it in a bag of rice with moisture absorber cylinders, but I'm not too hopeful. I didn't get any of the extended warranty/insurance stuff when I bought it, so am I SOL with getting a replacement or warranty service? It seems like it should still be under some warranty (got it back in August), but I'm having a hell of a time finding info about it.
Standard warranties tend to only cover manufacturers' faults, hardware defects or electronic/mechanical breakdowns. Swimming tends to be classed as physical damage, and while they might repair it, chances are they'd charge you for the repairs. It's worth double checking directly with Motorola, but it's probably not covered.
e: Moto's warranty sheet includes water contact under "abuse & misuse". Which sounds a little over-the-top as far as swimming is concerned. :P

I tried formatting the card on the pc, then trying to partition it using the clockwork rom recovery boot screen. although apps2sd is on the rom as standard, the recovery mode won't set the card up. Have to do that manually using gparted. I think I've done it now except I have no way of finding out. Well, quick info app shows apps2sd listing but as I download more things, the memory doesn't appear to change.

You have to manually copy apps to the SD card, unless you root your phone and change the default setting.

Yeah but you have to draw in the correct order somehow so that usually doesn't work for me

Yeah, I get it wrong sometimes, too. But once you learn enough kanji you can guess the stroke order pretty well.
Try that Kanji Yomi, maybe? It did work, but like I said it's finicky on my Desire. (Oh, and Aedict supports App2SD, by the way)

My phone is rooted with a rom that contains a2sd already. How would I go about changing the setting for save location? From what I found on the net, its supposed to just work automatically.
Does WidgetLocker allow you to change the unlock slider? One of the main things I want to due is switch the Sense bar to the stock android slider, but their FAQ only talks about their lockscreen widgets.

Ah, I'm not sure, then. I looked into doing it on my non-custom ROM phone and was too lazy to really do it (Android SDK, abd command line some stuff). Plus you still have to have the app support it to work.
No worries, it turned out it was working. The internal phone memory being reduced too isn't something to worry about. I managed to get it going after all lol. Ta for the tips though.
Ok, I know this has been discussed before, but I can't find it. Anyone have any recommendations about good apps/methods for tweaking the lock screen?
I disabled the lock screen on the Droid X a long time ago and now I kind of want it back on there but I can't find where I deactivated it anywhere. Using LauncherPro if that helps, I think I disabled it in there and now I can only use a lock-screen that has a password attached but not just a plain one that doesn't require a password.
Does anyone know of any awesome Android tablets coming out soon besides the Galaxy Tab? A Google search shows a bunch of outdated lists
google has not officially come out and supported the tablet configuration for Android yet, so every big company out there is kind of waiting on a standard, stating their intent, and occasionally talking about a potential future product, for the most part.
Once Google makes a standard, and discusses how they will support the form factor, I expect the floodgates will open.
As it stands, you need to use Samsung's SDK to write tablet-scaled apps for the tab, which does not bode will for cross-compatibility.
And every other tablet out there just runs scaled Android apps, which sucks, as one of the nice things about the iPad is that the interface was re-imagined for the larger device, in every way for the better. Running phone apps on a huge screen seems weird and pointless.
Anywho, I stand by a comment I made in the iPad thread a few days ago. Do not buy an android tablet yet unless you are ready to be burned by early adopter syndrome. There is no guarantee whatever google decides is tablet-friendly hardware for their post-gingerbread OS will even support the tab.

Ouch, well I guess I won't miss that feature hahaha
# "Simple Swipe" Screen lock for DROID X Froyo users (SW version 2.3.15) is a permanent feature. You will not have option to turn simple swipe Screen lock (the simple swipe from left to right after display comes up from sleep/dim) either OFF or ON your handset.
#
* If your DROID X handset had "simple swipe screen lock" turned off and you upgraded your handset to 2.3.15 Froyo update, you will not have the option in settings to turn it back on again because the ability to turn that feature on / off was removed.
* If you want to restore the "simple swipe screen lock" option in this scenario, you will need to perform a Factory Data Reset to set the handset to default 2.3.15 behavior. After the reset, you should have your "Screen lock" restored, but correct operation going forward will be that "simple swipe screen lock" is a feature that is permanently on.
# If using a Security lock (passcode, pattern, or passcode), you will also need to unlock the Screen lock when the display dims ot the top button is pressed.
"After over a month of relentless hacking, genius scotty2 has finally smashed the G2's notorious emmc-read-only-on-boot mechanism, which had been incorrectly characterized in the press as a 'rootkit.' The hack involves several steps — first achieving 'temp root' through a fork bomb exploit, then running a specially crafted kernel module that power-resets the read-only emmc to bring it up in read-write mode. Finally, the bootloader is re-flashed, which permanently removes the read-only on subsequent boots. The whole process is expected to be automated by tomorrow."
... cool, perm-root on the G2
I've been paying a mild amount of attention, and that sounded like the method that they were going to end up using.
End on
I wish that someway, somehow, that I could save every one of us
