"After over a month of relentless hacking, genius scotty2 has finally smashed the G2's notorious emmc-read-only-on-boot mechanism, which had been incorrectly characterized in the press as a 'rootkit.' The hack involves several steps — first achieving 'temp root' through a fork bomb exploit, then running a specially crafted kernel module that power-resets the read-only emmc to bring it up in read-write mode. Finally, the bootloader is re-flashed, which permanently removes the read-only on subsequent boots. The whole process is expected to be automated by tomorrow."
... cool, perm-root on the G2
I've been paying a mild amount of attention, and that sounded like the method that they were going to end up using.

Does anyone know of any awesome Android tablets coming out soon besides the Galaxy Tab? A Google search shows a bunch of outdated lists
google has not officially come out and supported the tablet configuration for Android yet, so every big company out there is kind of waiting on a standard, stating their intent, and occasionally talking about a potential future product, for the most part.
Once Google makes a standard, and discusses how they will support the form factor, I expect the floodgates will open.
As it stands, you need to use Samsung's SDK to write tablet-scaled apps for the tab, which does not bode will for cross-compatibility.
And every other tablet out there just runs scaled Android apps, which sucks, as one of the nice things about the iPad is that the interface was re-imagined for the larger device, in every way for the better. Running phone apps on a huge screen seems weird and pointless.
Anywho, I stand by a comment I made in the iPad thread a few days ago. Do not buy an android tablet yet unless you are ready to be burned by early adopter syndrome. There is no guarantee whatever google decides is tablet-friendly hardware for their post-gingerbread OS will even support the tab.
for the record, having used a galaxy tab, everything seemed to scale fine. nothing was too pixelated or too blurry.
the problems with the tab are the same as the problems with the iPad: it's just a giant phone. it's neat at first but then you say "i already have one of those in my pocket, why do I want to pay half a G for another one with a big screen?"

Well, in the case of the iPad, you aren't using phone software; you are using software built for the larger screen. And it makes a huge difference.
Once android goes down this road, and not the route Samsung tok with the tab, it will get interesting in tabletville.

Have you used the galaxy tab?
Samsung didn't slap stock android on it. the interface is absolutely designed for the device.

Yes, the stock apps have gotten the treatment. And they have made an SDK for people who want to develop for the unique stuff they did.
But not a single app on the android marketplace has been built with the tab in mind. And because this is samsungs custom work and not google endorsed, you are NOT runnin what will ultimately be google's vision for tablet software. So I do not expect to see a bunch of great 3rd party app support for it until google actually says where they are going with the platform.

Well shit, you know, no one EVER made an app just for the ipad, oh wait...
(seriously, man, I'm trying not to accuse you of being a fanboy here, but like I said, I've used the device personally. the only app that I used that really felt like it was hurting from the scaling was the calculator)
So last week, I decided to try this app that was made specifically to remove the pre-installed version of Google Goggles from the G2, since the pre-installed version wouldn't update to the newer version on the market. The remover required me to download Visionary to root the device (temporarily, they said). So I run it, everything seems great, after I update Goggles I delete Visionary and the Goggles remover.
Now T-Mobile sends out the update that adds wifi calling and unlocks wifi tethering and it won't install, apparently because of the rooting I did. I can't even manually install the update from a file. I even did a factory reset and it still wouldn't install. Now it seems like I'm going to have to flash the whole ROM to get the update to install right. I am so out of my depth here.

No, the iPad launched with thousands of apps built explicitly for it with months of lead time for developers to get on the ball with it before launch, and the explicit and direct support of the maker of the OS.
The tab Has none of this.
Like I said, I expect great things from the eventual tablet platform from google, be it android or chrome. Samsung really jumped the gun here... and most review sites are siding on the side of waiting for something more official.

Are apps region specific or something? Its hust Angry birds doesn't show for me. I can find the page for it but try to go into it and I get an error.
I don't know, the Market screens out stuff for all sorts of reasons. My phone has a tiny screen so I don't see a lot of apps, even if the app itself can actually run with no problems.
It's a free app, right? Could someone pass me the .apk or is that illegal?
My Droid X is alive and working perfectly. As if I needed another reason to love rice. Moisture absorbing cylinders from prescription bottles are pretty awesome as well.

Most review sites just echo each other. Go to a store with a demo unit and try it. It is honestly kind of useless to run around yelling "guys, this is a horrible thing, and I know that because some one told me."
Personally I wouldn't recommend the tab, but for VERY different reasons.

The vm heap thing? If your don't mind waiting til this evening then I could send it over?
I have a HTC Desire with US Cellular and it doesn't seem that I have the option to update to 2.2. My understanding is that I should get a pop up stating that an update is available for my phone pushed out by the carrier. I'm wanting to update to froyo mainly for the move app to SD function. Is there a way to manually update my phone to 2.2 without breaking anything?
I have been lax in updating my apps, so I don't know if this is old news or not, but Handcent SMS had an update available for me to download last night. It included awesome things like backing up your messages and settings and things online and, I don't know when they included this, but you can SEARCH through your text messages. I love it so much. I have probably well over six thousand texts on this thing.

Is anyone using an alternate text message app that isn't Handcent? Handcent on my desire has been starting to get really slow. Opening the app itself can take several seconds, and at times has been really frustrating. I'm assuming it's because some of my message threads have been getting pretty big. I'd like to get rid of some messages but I only see the option to delete entire threads, where what I really want is something like "delete everything older than # days" or "keep most recent # messages".
I just noticed that the default app has a message limit per thread, but I don't want to have to run two apps just to keep on top of my messages.
edit: In a foolish move I set the thread message limit in the default messages app to 200, and opened a 1500 message thread. The app crashed (presumably from trying to delete too many messages), I rebooted my phone, and now I can't open either Handcent or the default app without it crashing. Hooray, no texting for me!
update: After restarting my phone a few times, crashing, restarting, uninstalling every app I could do without, restarting, crashing, crashing, crashing and restarting some more, it seems sorted now. I was starting to think about doing a factory reset. From now on I'm going to keep a close eye on how many messages I have building up.
Clicking Download leads your phone to the Android Market, which merrily informs you that there are no matches.
Scratch this, I downloaded the apk for the patched Market (that ignores the low resolution on my phone) and that one shows the VM heap tool app. So now I've gotten it.
My handcent cuts threads off at x messages ('click to view older'). 1500 is a lot though.
you might want to backup or export some of those messages (like with myphoneexplorer)
Well it only displays a certain number at a time. But I'm guessing there's some sort of indexing going on which takes longer and longer. I just realised I have another 2000 message conversation from my girlfriends old number which I sort of need to get rid of. Ugh. Will definitely be more careful about this in future.
Loving Android after playing with it for a while. It feels very much like a product of its Linux heritage, which is both a good thing and a bad thing at times. Very positive overall, though.
My main beefs so far are the app market giving the dumb "cannot be found" error when it's actually denying the page because your phone's resolution is too small (though as seen in this thread, it's just a matter of grabbing the .apk manually, so this is mostly just a UI annoyance), and the odd way Android handles wallpapers (this weird shift-the-wallpaper-to-one-side-a-little parallax system).
Severely getting tempted to root and have a play around with Launcher Pro. Is unrooting very reliable?
Thanks Allforce, I think I must've just gotten confused with something else that needed rooting.
After installing LauncherPro, it's fixed all my niggles with the UI and improved the responsiveness of the interface in general. Great stuff. The one thing that still bugs me is that I want to make the top bar black with white text instead of silver, though I might be able to curmugeon that some other way.
LauncherPro doesn't require rooting, also it has a handy option to eliminate the wallpaper scrolling
But does it allow for oversize wallpapers with extra scrolling? Or per page wallpapers?
The only way I've been able to use one page wallpapers is to use a livewallpaper like Multi Picture, and set it up for just one screen (or you can define one wallpaper per screen)
I wonder why they didn't include Swype. They even mentioned it when talking about SlideIT.
Probably because it's not available on the market at all so really no point in suggesting it.
I switched from Swype to SwiftKey and am never going back. The text prediction is awesome and you can sometimes just bang out an entire sentence in 6-7 taps.

Really? I might try that, I've been using Swype for a few days now and it is fantastic. Ofcourse, when showing the phone off to others they're pretty much stumped as to what they're supposed to do
i noticed some real nice game sales in the market right now. doodlejump is 99 cents, and all the Hexage HD games are 75% off (except Evac HD, which is 50% off). that puts most of them at 81 cents each. thats a steal for Radiant HD, which is the only once ive played so far.

SwiftKeys is pretty darn nice. Even remembers my words so when I go to type in my screen name on websites, it will pop up with my name even after just typing 'ST'. Though the spacebar seems kinda small or off center or something, as I find myself hitting period a lot instead of spacing. And it took me a little while to realize I didn't need to backspace to put a period down.
