Google needs to work on standardizing firmwares before messing with the hardware. Having 40% of your handcents on the latest firmware is not something to be proud of.

what is google's benefit to standardizing ANYTHING?
that's what all the people "demanding" standardization seem to ignore. Google isn't SELLING android.

As I understand it, nope.
But google makes that sweet ad revenue.

That's not google's fault. The carriers and manufacturers are responsible for phone updates (except for the Nexus line). Google makes it available, it's up to them to use it.

I have to share. I'm absolutely in love with GO Launcher.
I feel like it has many of the best parts of ADW and LauncherPro. It's still missing a few things, but it really fills in the gaps for LauncherPro for me (gestures, and moving whole screens around on the fly, in particular).

Wow, first people who don't use Google Maps on their Android phone, now people who don't use search on it, wonders never cease.
I guess I've never really needed either. We have a GPS in the car if we need directions, and I've always just pulled up the Dolphin browser to search for something if I have to.
Next time I even contemplate buying a phone, I'm going to check whether it has been conclusively and thoroughly rooted.
True that. And also one to which you can flash custom firmware (god damn it Motorola)
The thing I like with the search button is a long press goes to Voice Search on the Milestone, I don't think I've ever used the text input (since the search will open a browser anyway) but sometimes a shortcut the Voice Search has come in handy when I don't feel like typing.

Android is mostly open source, and one of the things that Google advertises about it is that it is completely open for you to do whatever you want, so actually going through and standardizing things would have a negative effect on many sales.

google makes their money in online ad revenue. The point of android is to make it as easy as possible for more people to get online
so hey
is it somehow possible to put my htc desire's OS on the microSD card entirely?
I am god fucking fed up with not having enough space on the apparently fucking tiny system flash
Flash leedroid. I did it recently and instead of a paltry 10 mb free I have now 120 mb free, this with a2sd disabled as apparently it does not work with my sd card (only works if you have class 6 SD or something, I'd check it out first if I were you and maybe consider the non a2sd build)

I flashed a MIUI ROM (MIUI-Au, to be exact). Have oodles and oodles of space now. Just add a launcher like ADW or GO if you don't like having all the apps smack dab on the homescreen, iOS style.
Next time I even contemplate buying a phone, I'm going to check whether it has been conclusively and thoroughly rooted.

Sony Ericsson apparently just released updates for its entire Xperia Android line just to disable a common root method. And... not much else? arglebargle. There are complaints it regressed a Wifi problem that had been fixed in a previous update.
There are already new exploit methods out but I mean, really now.

Think this is something google needs to get involved in making it's firmware updated universally accessible to each phone with a custom UI such as sense, touch wiz and motoblur so each new update doesn't effect the custom UI and vice versa

So google is supposed to worry all these completely optional UIs it had no part in making? I don't see where the benefit is to them.
So google is supposed to worry all these completely optional UIs it had no part in making? I don't see where the benefit is to them.
Because it actually wants its OS to be used, and all the big manufacturers need/want to differentiate their handsets somehow?
Actually its to make sure customers are able to access the latest firmware. All these manufactures keep giving the same excuses about having to 'reskin' the custom UI to each new build of the firmware as a reason why we don't see new firmware on certain high end phones for ages or worse not at all.

That seems like it will be self-correcting. People are going to start realizing which companies care enough to put out timely updates and are just going to stop putting up with the others.

That's benefit to the customers, not benefit to google.
Google doesn't make money off of an android phone sale, let alone an android phone firmware upgrade.

Only its started to become a lottery for handsets getting updates under the same company which it's disgraceful to see for example one htc phone getting an update and another not for 6 months if ever.
I intend to buy a phone with as little carrier malarky as possible. If not one with an unlocked bootloader like my D1. That way with any luck I'll get an update fairly quickly, or be able to get a modded version of the newest updates faster than my handset maker.
Has moto said if the D1 will get 2.3? It wouldn't surprise me if they held it back since many D1 owners are coming up on their upgrades.

Hm, my contract has been up since November. I'm on tmobile, but am open to switching networks. Should I get an Evo, or wait a bit longer until the tegras come out? I haven't seen any solid release dates thus far, and am getting rather tired with the slowness of my G1.

Wait and get a sweet ass Tegra.
On a side note, we've been talking about epic dual core phones and tablets, but what about the most important news?

getting an evo right now is really silly. Besides the fact that the myTouch 4G is superior to the Evo(except for screen size), the fact is that there are a bunch of new phones that were just announced, if you really want to switch away from T-Mobile.

google knew what they were setting up when they drew up the licensing agreements

Pretty much all the manufacturers tart up their phones somehow though. They need to differentiate themselves.

Fuck Hulu Plus
Hulu was a great idea, when it meant a legal way to stream shows for free
now they want us to pay for the privilege of watching ads?
I'll wait for the netflix app, thanks.
