So the quest to become a mage in Planescape: Torment is probably one of the coolest quests I've ever done in a game. I mean sure it's a fetch-quest but it's not just a fetch-quest. Totally fucking great.
Holy shit. Impatience got the better of me and I went digging in my storage closet for old boxes full of computer-related junk.
Not only did I find BG2 intact (installing BGTuTu now), but I found CDs for such games as Arcanum, Dungeon Keeper(s), Crusader: No Remorse, Betrayal at Antara, Theme Park, and a handful of old RTS games I forgot existed (such as Dark Reign). I also found X-Com: Terror from the Deep, but that fucker is probably the hardest game I've ever played and it just pisses me off seeing that webbed aqua-hand reaching out to taunt me.
Looks like I'll be occupied even after my marathon Infinity Engine romp ends several months from now.
I really wish somebody had a patch for KOTOR 2 that made it work on Intel "graphics" cards. I'd like to play it, but my mom is the one who's bought all the computers in the family, and she never wants to buy one with a decent card.
Isn't it just the greatest when parents go to best buy and drop $1000 or something on a laptop for their kid and the salesman gives them something with a billion terrabytes of hd and millions of gigs of ram
but it has an intel GMA integrated card so it can't run shit (this happened to a friend of mine, his $1000 i5 laptop can't come close to running what my $600 one from newegg can, because of the graphics)
I'm so glad I educated my mom about buying technology for people over a decade ago
1- Next time she's shopping for one, ask her to find a computer she likes
2- Note down the price
3- Tell her you'll build one yourself for that price or less.
4- Profit!
4a- Err, but not the embezzlement kind of "Profit!" though.
The flipside is that you may end up being the impromptu tech support when the family does something to it, but whenever there's a store bought computer, you typically end up doing that anyway (I know I did) so that's not likely to be a big change.
Components off an internet store (and you can make sure you've got things like a good quality power supply or HDD, all the little things that off-the-shelf computers scrimp on), and throw in a decent graphics card with the remainder.
These days even a modestly graphics card will run games maxed out.

I'm actually doodling along on a Vaio SZ with 1 gig of ram, running windows 7. Its kind of frustrating to run Guild wars and stammer along because it can't juggle.
Thank goodness for Gog, but damn it, my mercs don't know where to get better guns, how can I liberate San Mona with 1 rifle, 2 sub machines guns, a shotgun, and 3 pistols (Ira rocks the twin eagles).
While you guys have been playing Renaissance Fair, I've been clawing my way out of the grave, and blowing my way towards vengeance with a fist full of TNT in one hand and a Flare Gun in the other. I'm currently murdering my way through some kind of Hell Train and it is fucking cool.
Blood is just totally awesome. My only complaint is, I need more Flare Gun ammo! How am I supposed to burn everything that moves without more ammo for this awesome weapon? Which isn't really a complaint. Because all of the weapons are really satisfying. And speaking of pacing, Blood has some really interesting pacing to the combat. It's really different than anything else I've seen. And even on the easier difficulties, one Zombie can totally mess you the fuck up. I think that's killer. It gives the game a nice place to sit in my growing collection of First Person Shooting from the Dawn of First Person Shooting.
So, goddamnit, someone else needs to be playing this so they can drop in and say, "I was totally ambushed by a Zombie and it hurt so bad I think I felt it IRL." And I can say, "I know right isn't that totally awesome?"
what difficulty are you playing on? I played on the 2nd hardest and the flare gun quickly becomes useless imo, i had nearly max ammo for it all the time. I forced myself to use it so I could pick up flare ammo, haha. The problem with it is that flares are really only good against zombies and the cultists, otherwise, it sucks against everything else. Also yes...the game is really hard haha. A little too hard in the wrong ways like, the cultists uber auto-aim and instantly shooting you with pinpoint accuracy the second you pop your head out. Add-on the ridiculous damage they do to you (25+) and you really gotta be careful. Best way to deal with cultists without getting shot is dynamite and the tommy gun (so you keep stunning them). Or you can let the cultists kill themselves when they throw dynamite at you, funny when that happens.
You are right though, all the weapons in this game are really satisfying, although I rarely used the voodoo doll. My favorite weapon was the dynamite for sure, such a simple weapon, but so great.
I'm on the First Episode still. Once I got over the initial shock of trying to play on the third (default) difficulty setting and just getting my ass handed to me, I turned the difficulty down a notch and now I'm really enjoying it. And that kind of hard damage and omniscient-uberautoaim AI is consistent with all the early Lithtech games that I've played (like Shogo for instance) so that wasn't really a big surprise to see in Blood. Yeah, slinging dynamite, advancing and then quickly retreating to draw enemies into larger areas so player speed advantage is maximized and stuff like that is how I'm dealing with enemies. I have encountered my first batches of cultists and oh yeah holy shit do they hurt.
I also seriously miss how much content you get with these older games. New games are slim affairs these days.
I wonder if we can get multiplayer working on this sucker?
in the start menu, the game creates shortcuts for hosting/joining a multiplayer game. Did the game have co-op? If you want deathmatch, there is a pretty good clone of it made for the Quake1 engine called Transfusion.
Blood absolutely has coop. Me and Blain played it coop over Hamachi a few months back, and it is as awesome fun now as it was when I was growing up. Deathmatch is also a blast, especially with the voodoo doll. Man, I totally love that thing.

Well, the thing is that I'll be buying a decent computer once I get hired somewhere and move out; also, I'm not at all confident that I can actually build a computer, knowing little about hardware and not being good with my hands at all.

So if Planescape Torment had the "spells slows things down to a crawl" issue on my computer, is there any reason to think that Baldur's Gate won't be the same? I'd like to play through the series again, but not if I have to put up with more of that...

This was me before I built my first computer. It is really really not hard if you spend some time making sure your parts are compatible, which is not a big deal. Just post a list of parts you're thinking of on the tech forum and people will critique it.

The original BG? I have no idea. I have the problem with Icewind Dale but I don't have the problem with Icewind Dale 2. And I've heard that fiddling with some of the config options in IWD actually helps (I don't remember the original BG have any of these options though).
Yeah, I just tested the spell flame strike with 3D acceleration on and experienced no slowdown in the first IWD. That bodes well for Baldur's Gate 2, at least.
Anyone want to convince me on the Betrayal games? I enjoyed the books in high school, and Return to Krondor was pretty cool, but these look just a bit too archaic for my enjoyment, going by the pictures. Are those seriously movement arrows in the upper-left corner that you click on to get around?
I've had alot of fun with betrayal at krondor in the past and it was pretty dated when I was playing it. I thought it had been released for free though at some point? Hmm... wikipedia says in 1997 they did but you can't get it anymore.
So yeah krondor is really good. The 3D worldmap stuff is a bit bleh looking due to being ancient but everything else looks pretty good as its ether digitized actors or pretty painted stuff. The writing is excellent and you get a nice page of story (usually something actually interesting) just for visiting a house or whatever. If I remember correctly you have those navigation arrows but you can just use your keyboard to get around, for BaK anyway been a while since I've played tho.
Krondor also has a handy "Stick to road" button that lets you just hold forward to zip along the road.
I dono much about Antara but looking at the GOG website I think the Antara graphics look worse dispite being higher resolution.
I think I may have convinced myself to give the game another go... I've never finished it as I usually get stuck and every time I come back to the game I start from the beginning again.
Are there negative consequences for my mercenary group to let the paid contracts expire, let those mercs go home and pull buckshot out their ass while I let my bank account fill up from the single town I've liberated, and then rehire Len and Nails and hire a whole second squad?
Also, I want modern game like JA2, optimized to run fast, not pretty, and let me assemble a mercenary army that takes over a planet that was ravaged by war, incorporates the few survivors and their tech into the army, and begins a long campaign of freeing and importing enslaved children, refugees, and skilled labor to boost their population. Bonus points if it lets me have mechs, spaceships, and psychic warfare battles.
edit: If you can't tell, I love this game even though she keeps abusing me.

It's best not to let the contracts lapse. Mainly because then you have to rehire them, or wait for them to come back from another job, and then they have to fly back to the country. Also, the Queen will attack your town. Also, both Bobby Ray's and the gun runner in that other town, their stock gets better the more towns you liberate (which also gets you more cash).

except, it seems they ran money at the end of BoK. The ending was a bit rushed....
Seems Temple of Elemental evil was just released for $6, worth a shot?
If you patch it up, and think about it as a pure 3rd edition combat sim, you can have a lot of fun with it. But it's not really anything more than that.

Yeah, it's the best implementation of tabletop combat I've ever seen, but it's not much for story. There is a plot, but it's basically a computer version of an old school module so it's basically "Do this stuff to keep this evil dude from coming back".
Definitely get the fan patch, though. Atari really screwed it up by making Troika cut content at the last second.

Damn, after finding those links, I may have to start over with an earlier save after I found Nails. Right now, I see the only way to liberate Son Mona is to walk into a small room, shoot someone in the back of the head, and prone on the ground and shoot anyone walking through the door and hope they don't see my crew.
