Al Gore's Fanciful Expose: The Coming Wetness

I have yet to see this now award-nominated piece of film.

Is it truth? How does one measure truth?

How hot is warm? How hot is Al Gore?

I have included some screen shots which I am to understand do not entirely spoil the plot.

It focused more on the politics of the situation rather than the actual scientific side but overall I think it did a very good job of conveying the message

I'm actually willing to say that Gore has put the issue out in the forefront quite a bit. You can have a thousand climatologists screaming silence, but get one politician that is completely hated to stand behind something and people listen.

I haven't seen this movie, but i'm guessing it's filled to the brim with political science rather than the actual truth. The facts are still true, but warped to present their idea as the best possible option.

But man, hasn't the ozone layer been repairing itself over the years? I heard on the news that the hole has actually decreased as time has passed by.

Its sort of better since CFCs were banned in a lot of places. Developing countries still use them though because they're the cheapest way to run coolant systems like fridges, and not dying from rancid meat poisoning is more important to them right now than skin cancer in 20 years. So there's still a fair amount of new emissions entering the system. Main problem is though that the molecules of CFC take years and years (decade, really) to break down, so there's a long lag time between stopping their use and things improving. Things'll keep getting better slowly, and more so once the DC's get rich enough to switch to other coolants.

Oh, and the ozone layer has nothing to do with climate change. Totally separate issue.

To be honest, i'm not really believing that this global warming issue is a big deal. I mean, if the earth has been around for millions of years, then why haven't things like volcano eruptions, forest fires, and other various disasters wiped the slate clean? I know full well that one volcano eruption can put out a hell of a lot more smoke, fire and brimstone than corporations can do in a year or two, and that certainly isn't something we as people can control.

    Just tossin' around an idea.

    not totally true
if you compare the amount of co2 from an eruption to what is put out by people (cars, whatever) people win

what about the smoke, fire, and... brimstone? What? And CFCs, and carbon dioxide, and other chemicals that millions, no, billions of people and animals put out continuously, every single day, for the decades in between eruptions?

So what makes you so certain that a single volcanic eruption puts more pollutants into the atmosphere than the cumulative pollution from human industry? Your rationale seems to simply be, "I know this is the case because I want to believe this is the case." Also, human industry pumps a broader range of pollutants into the atmosphere than an eruption and it's something that's going on all the time instead of the occasional eruption. Your logic strikes me as deeply flawed but if you have the sources to back it up I'm willing to peruse them and reconsider.

We still get a buttload of snow, but it seems to have shifted seasons in Alberta. When I was a kid we got the majority of our cold weather and snow from October through till about January. Now it seems to start in January and run right into spring.

I can't wait until we can have Christmas at the lake.

My chemistry instructor tried to play that angle to show how stupid environmentalists are. Basically a human exhales 2-3 times more CO2 in a day than a vehicle produces. Something struck me as overly simplistic about this and unfortunately it wasn't until after class that I realized the flaw in his argument.

See, it's true that animals (including humans of course) exhale CO2 as a waste product all the time. So yes, humans are exhaling huge amounts of CO2, oh noes why worry about vehicles when they produce a fraction of the CO2, right?

Wrong. The chink in that chain of logic is that the CO2 produced by us and other animals is a waste product of the Krebs cycle whereby carbohydrates (so called because they are carbon chains that are used to store energy) are converted in respiration into energy with water and CO2 being the products of the process. Now, these carbohydrates, even if we are getting them from meat, ultimately originate from plants as a result of photosynthesis whereby CO2 is stripped of its carbon so that carbohydrates can be formed to store the energy from photosynthesis which animals later eat. So when we exhale CO2, all we're really doing is sending carbon that's already cycling through the environment back into a usable form for plants to use again.

With the burning of fossil fuels, the important difference is that we're taking carbohydrates (the oil) that have been essentially sequestered underground for thousands to millions of years and suddenly releasing that extra CO2 into the environment, tipping the balance out of whack in a way that animal respiration does not.
