Not my video, but I bought the same ball to use as an artifact for my S.T.A.L.K.E.R. costume. I'd like to make it look less like a tennis ball and more like a rock. Any ideas on how to build it up without dimming the light down too much? Otherwise I'll probably cut it down instead.
What about using some sort of clear resin to build up on it?
I looked it up and that sounds like exactly what I was hoping to find. Thanks!
I wanted to share my wife's genius with you all.. this was last Halloween, my youngest went as a Jawa.. I am too tall or I would steal this and use it at PAX.. lol
ignore the floor, we were redoing the kitchen.. Oh and the dog is Lil Bear, he is half Wiener, and half pitbull... but all sweetheart. We call him a Wiebull.

No problemo! The stuff my girlfriend uses is a bit runny, but if you can find resin that is thicker, or create some setup where you can just glob the stuff on, it should work perfectly.
Almost there! I've got to do some finishing stuff to it, but my Protomen band style helmet is nearing completion. It's not perfect, but I've learned a ton doing this and will be way better prepared for when I do my Mark II helmet.
First off, your Nidalee costume looks amazing so far. I did the Leopard skin for the Halloween costume last year, was pretty ghetto, lol, I'm jealous of how great that one is going to be. Second, are you wearing that for the costume contest? :O
Unfortunately not. I am attending Friday and Saturday, but I have to leave early Sunday morning to head back to college.

Looking great! A lot more polished than the last picture.

That looks fantastic so far! How did you make the clear visor?

I used a cloth measuring tape to mark out where I wanted to make the cut by laying it out as flat as possible along the visor to make sure that it's the smoothest arc possible. After making my initial mark, I layed out a few layers of painter's tape along the mark and then put some thicker duct tape on top of the painter's tape just to reinforce it. That way, when I started making my actual cuts, I've got a physical barrier that would help keep me from completely screwing the cut up. I used a carbide cutter tip on my Dremel to cut off the majority of the visor and then used a high grit sandpaper to knock the last little bit off. I finished it up with a low grit sandpaper after that. A little bit of penetrant like PB Blaster is great for cleaning off any sharpie still on the visor.
Way late reply! We definitely do have to do a group shoot. I'll have Merrill for Fri & Sat, Sunday is the LoL costume contest, so no Merrill that day.
As for the chainmail, I would've loved to try and create real mail, but I am not that talented, lol. I tried out a few different ideas, but ended up using a black fishnet bodystocking painted with gray & silver paint. Then I just layered it over my black bodysuit. The fishnet lost a lot of stretch, but it still works pretty well.
Excellent~! I think we're planning on dressing up on Saturday since that's when the Dragon Age panel is taking place. I'm not sure the best way to coordinate a group photo but I'd imagine we'll see each other in passing throughout the day.
I just finished with the chain mail for my bodice last night. I don't even want to think about how many hours it took me to complete but it was a lot of fun to learn how to assemble it. You'd probably need a year to do something like what Merrill is wearing. The painted fishnets over the black bodysuit sounds like it'll work out great! What are you thinking of using for the tattoos? From the Merrill costumes I've seen online that seems like the most difficult part to pull off cleanly.

I would love to see pics of your maille work. Pics please!
Gonna be my first PAX in two years (moving and such got in the way!) so I'm super excited. Just completed the finishing touches on my Steampunk costume.
Bleh. Do to some stuff coming out of the blue I'm going to have to finish up Chell within tonight or tomorrow because I may be leaving for Washington sooner than expected. I am getting my hair done tomorrow so that's at least one thing that is scheduled to be done.
All that is left is filling things with colored liquid on Vanessa, getting my horn to stay on my head nicely for Twilight, and tiny cleanups and getting things to lay nicely with some ironing!
Overall happy about both costumes, not so happy with the color that the printer used for the tabard (asked for more gold, and got orange!) but the rest I am happy with, now I hope people will recognize them.
Sorry for bad quality, just took these 10 minutes ago at night and my bf has no clue about my camera >.<
I would love to see pics of your maille work. Pics please!
Sure thing~! I've still got to put the leather straps and buckles on so I don't have any photos wearing it just yet. It's my first attempt at doing any maille so I've had to deal with a lot of self inflicted problems but it's been lot of fun to make. Do you get yours from TheRingLord or make your own normally? I've been really curious about the colored ones.
If I can fit my light saber into my luggage then I'm gonna be wandering around PAX dresses as Travis Touchdown Here's what it looks like from a few years ago:
Put the sabre into a pvc tube and cap both ends. Bam, instant sabre holding luggage. If you really wanna be a jerk, lash the pvc tube to your luggage and claim the whole shebang as one piece.
I was hoping to do some painting on my Buster Cannon tonight but I need to get a different kind of paint to use. The white paint I have is kinda butts for this sorta detail work.
EDIT: Turns out the black paint I had gotten was complete balls and is the wrong paint. That explains that. Guess I've got a paint run to do tomorrow!
The Enforcers aren't going to rip up your PAX badge if you don't cosplay from some approved list. Dress up as whatever you like and think you can do well.
Oh I know, I Just didn't want to look like the guy that brought a tank to a knife fight. Besides, nothing says FAIL like being the one guy to dress like the Most Awesome Band in the world @ a gaming convention, when that type of stuff should have been saves for Comic Con.

Impressive! I do get my supplies from TRL. I don't have the time or patience to make my own rings. Some people scoff at me for that, and then I ask why they're knitting with store-bought yarn. It's the same damn thing. Plus, there's no way I could keep my prices so low if I made my own rings.
You are coming to PAX. You are about to meet 30,000 new friends. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone being ridiculed at PAX. Dress however you want.

Thanks! I'd just ignore the people doing the scoffing. TRL has a huge selection of metals and finishes and that's time saved that you can focus on actually knitting products. My only 'complaint' is that the shipping was a little painful on my order. I'd imagine that gets less so with large orders. Once I'm all finished with this costume I might pester you for tips on knitting scale maille as the next costume I'm thinking of making has some in it.

Scales are easier than they look. It's basically euro 4-in-1, with a little extra care taken to make sure the scales are all hanging the same way. For small scales you want 18g 3/16" rings, for large scales it's 16g 5/16". If it's for costume purposes, don't bother with the split rings. They are a hassle and scratch the anodized scales. Stick to the normal aluminum rings for costume durability and light weight feel.
Shipping is a bit of a pain, because they're so far out in BF Canada. Anytime you're buying rings for a project (especially anodized) buy MORE than enough in one shipment. That way you don't get any dye lot variations in the color, and shipping doesn't feel quite so steep. I have a pink shirt with three different colors of pink because I didn't have $ to buy the supplies in one go!
I'm really just throwing out the idea, and I know they really have ZILCH to do with gaming, but are just nerdy in general but....
you think that it would be OK to cosplay as one of The Aquabats?
I'm actually dressing up as this as well. Hopefully we run into each other. I was debating on if I should get the makeup stuff to blackout my tooth like MCBC or not. I'll probably just be lazy and skip it though. You going as one of them in particular?

REALLY?! IT's ON! LOL!! No one in particular. Here's a peek:
(Made the belt myself, and I'm in the process of finishing 8 more. wont be done in time for PAX though.. The Batboy is the hardest part and I'm afraid that due to a semigloss issue it won't be as clean as is was in this pic. for some reason the gloss I put on it got really sticky :S)
I really do hope we run into eachother! What day will you be cosplaying?

What day are all you going to Cosplay? I am thinking I will Sunday. As I am only there Saturday and Sunday, and Sunday would be better after I get my bearings in PAX on Saturday.

Saturday is my plan. Friday is my load in day for BYOC and the initial exploring. Saturday is the Walk around hoping people want pictures, lol, Sunday is the cool down and mad rush for anything i think I missed.

based on all the talk, it looks like saturday would be a good choice for me as well!

You must be so happy that this convention takes place in the summer.

That is looking absolutely amazing, and as a fan of the game,I can't wait to see it when finished.

The Ska Robot Army demands that you skank your way through PAX.

Here's a cruddy photo of me in the outfit. My hair is a lot darker than the lighting suggests. It's almost done! Only a week left you guys!
A close up of my hat, cause I am doing demos for them.
