I've had a couple high school classmates (from 6 years ago) die this past year. It's weird because you don't think you'll be going to any of their funerals for another 80 years, if at all, but there they are

Yeah. I graduated in '03. I hadn't seen the guy in a few years (we weren't best friends or anything) but it's really sobering to know that someone I knew went out that way.
Giraldo would have laughed at Gottfried's joke. No one that knew Greg is mad at Gottfried's comment.

I've followed Greg Giraldo long before he became more noticed from the Comedy Central roasts, I've seen him perform twice, and I have to say from what I get from his standup and everything I've seen him do that being overly sensitive was not something he was all about.
It's a joke. He made them about people, living and dead. Hell he made a joke about Gary Coleman at the Hasselhoff roast like right after Gary Coleman had died. Something like "Hasselhoff's liver is small, shriveled, black, and dead...just like Gary Coleman". This is not a guy that would have gotten offended by what Gilbert Gottfried said.

gottfried makes a point of doing this type of thing
either it's because he thinks "too soon" is a bullshit reason for not telling the joke
or it's just part of the many things that are wrong with him
