So you know how folks sometimes say "I do my best thinking while in the bathroom"? Well I just had a bathroom epiphany.
This guy needs a proper tribute in one of the servers. I'm thinking a fairly large scale statue, using gold bricks for the sash, glass-encased water for the blue stuff, and glass-encased lava for the helmet. He deserves no less.
This is nothing short of divinely inspired. It must be done.
Draw up the plans and pic a server and I'll help. About how tall do you think he needs to be 75, 80, no 500 cubes tall.
So I'm building a river. What for? I don't know, but I want one!
Then at a bend, I accidentally dig a little too much, and make a neat little cove, so I work on it so it looks better. Why? Just because. While I'm doing it, I think, hey I could also do a huge chasm with an underground lake, and an island with a tree in it and sunlight from above ground and-

I don't get why zeal and it's sister island are in hinterland and are without snow cover
I use planks too, because one log becomes 4 planks; it just seems like the efficient thing to do.
Although I've had some trouble with different materials sometimes not doing the trick. I had made a brazier using cobblestone out in the open and the plank burned out; but when I made it with gravel it burned forever.
And I noticed in multiplayer that zombies don't come out at night, you can't get hurt, and you can't kill animals. Is true survival mode just not implemented yet for multiplayer? My gf and I have been really wanting to do some co-op survival.
so i popped into the world expo server to see what the hullabaloo was all about and oh my god i have minecraft envy.... you people are just amazing i see nothing but cool stuff everywhere i go.

The statue needs to be posed in mid execution of FALCON PAWNCH!
I don't get why zeal and it's sister island are in hinterland and are without snow cover
I'm pretty sure Ein did some wizardry and ripped the Hinterlands from another map and plopped it in this one.
Therefore, the snow from the old biome is there, but no new snow falls (at least until Notch makes biomes work).
I'm really looking forward to seeing this game get fleshed out more. Thinking about biomes and super-monsters and more mechanical stuff gets me hot. I want to face off against some kind of massive demon that can only be killed by the creation of an ingenious trap or gigantic killing device.
I keep getting a crash error if I play on any server except Ein's. Can someone decipher this for me?

Something tried to dereference a null pointer, which is a bad thing that causes running programs to crash. The offending line of code is line 58 of some source file, and involves some object or function called fz.b.
Only someone with access to the game source code (i.e. Notch) can get meaning from that.
Also from what I hear it's extremely frustrating for game developers to hear about people having trouble running their game, and yet have zero crash or bug reports hit their inbox. You aren't bothering anyone -- please really do email that crash report (with a good description of what you were doing when it happened, as best as you can remember, and especially anything you've done that you think most people don't do that often) to the email address shown.

Issues similar to mine have already been posted about at the Minecraft forums, but I thought I'd ask around here for some possibly more tech-oriented answers.
I can't seem to connect to pretty much any server any more. The problem very consistent, though:
1. I successfully connect to a server (usually Ein's). This takes only a few seconds.
2. Map loads up and I get only the chunk where I currently am - no further chunks load at all. I see other players, static, non-moving. I also see the Motd and maybe one or two lines of chat. If I try to speak myself, nothing happens. I can move around freely, but no new chunks load.
3. After about 15 seconds I am disconnected from the server with a SocketExpection error: "recv failed".
Now this is the weirdest part:
4. If I now (after doing this once) try to connect to a server (and not necessarily the same server), I simply won't be able to. I'll never get past the connection screens, and usually won't even go from "Connecting" to "Logging In" - I'll just get the "recv failed" error, or a "connect" error in the connection screen itself. I write this again - this will also happen on other servers I try to join, not just the one I had the first four steps happen on.
What I *CAN* do, is connect to a server running on the same machine I'm playing from (localhost). What this tells me is that my problems probably aren't with the main authentication server.
I'm running Win7(64b) with a Realtek network card and everything else seems to work fine - It's just Minecraft I'm having troubles with. From what I've read so far, it seems most likely that this is a bug in the Minecraft code that Notch simply needs to fix, but in the off chance it isn't, I hope one of you guys can shed some light on the issue.
Thanks in advance for any help.
I'm going to think out loud here.
"recv failed" means the game had a connection open, but something caused the game to be unable to receive more data. Either the connection was force-closed by the other end (server shut down, or you were booted), the connection was closed by something in between (a firewall or content filter ended the connection, or your router restarted), or the connection was closed by your own PC (PC thinks it just lost its network connection and needs to close all sockets, perhaps).
What connects you to the Internet? Are you on a home network, and you control everything between your PC and the wires owned by your provider? Or on a business network, or school network? Knowing that might point us in the right direction.
I'm running on a home network on a machine connected by cable to a Linksys WRT54G. My ISP does not block any port, nor does it filter network traffic in any way. I can run connection tests both in-country and all the way to the US (where I ping around 240 on east coast servers) with perfect results. Minecraft is the only game giving me any trouble with online play.
I'm pretty sure it has something to do with bad network code in Minecraft relating to the fact that I'm attempting long distance (high ping: 200-300) connections. I found some public server list and could not connect to any of the American servers, but could easily connect to European ones.
Since there's currently no official support channel, I can only hope Notch is aware of this, and that it gets fixed soon.

also, my main fort now has a cobble generator and a monster ranch. gotta love those 64 stacks of gunpowder
... i can see it now, you prepare a monster arena, with tons of arrow traps and lava pitfalls, only to have dug too deep and rouse a demon from slumber.
it punches a 4x4 circle to the surface to sup on your flesh, and you lure it to the arena and fight to the death. ... epic.

I'm honestly not all that artistic in nature, so I haven't really put all the pieces together of how to get a proper statue of the captain into the game. I have however already decided on the height. I want his scarf-like-thing to be just below the cloud line, so that his helmet causes a majestic lens flare and silhouette from the sun.
Is there a better way to kill things than just using my sword? Some kind of traps I can make to crush things under sand or gravel maybe?
Hunting down spiders to gather string and make a bow is very bothersome. And trying to gather leather from cows is a long process =\
That was me. I liked your "pile of trees" so much that I felt terrible about chopping it down for wood, so I planted a few rows of trees next to it. I've been expanding it a little bit each day. I usually take credit for the tree farm proper, but it wouldn't exist if not for you. :P
By "fort", do you mean the under construction observation deck or the house I built up in the tree? I've been meaning to expand the observation deck, but the simplicity of it has kind of grown on me.
I saw both the viewing platform and the house. Maybe multiple tiny platforms like that one spread around the forest would be neat? Or some wooden bridges between a house or two in the treetops?

I suppose you could make a pressure plate that sets off TNT or something like that.
Actually, I remember seeing a YouTube video where a guy was putting pressure plates directly on top of TNT, essentially making landmines.
Sand and gravel are the only two elements that are affected by gravity I think, but there's not really a way to make them fall if you're not around to cut whatever they are anchored to.

You could always search for a spider spawner and turn that into a water trap.
A few friends of myself got a server up tonight and have built a lot of stuff we dont want to lose. Where does minecraft save its server files? We've done /save-on and /save-all to force a save, but we just want to make sure the file is actually there before quitting for the night. Does it just save to/overwrite the minecraft-server.dat file or...what?
So, I'm starting work on the Mountain of Woe to compliment the Zeal Islands. I got the chain and most of the 1st land mass done. Feel free to add. I know also Beenie was working on the Earthbound Village leading up, so give him love on that. I'ma go collapse now. Night all.

So, I just killed a creeper from inside my little hidey-hole. I then dug myself out and ran in case there were more. Sure enough, SSSSSSSssBOOM! I go to turn around when I hear another SSSSSSssBOOM! As if that weren't enough, the second and third creeper's explosions killed a FOURTH creeper. Which dropped some gunpowder. And they uncovered some iron!
This is the hole they left:
Note: Those blocks in the middle top were above the hole I dug. At the time, it was ground level.
Quick question: I'm trying to make a forest, and I was wondering what exactly are the grow requirements for a tree. Does it need a certain amount of space around it... either upwards or on the ground before it grows?
Also a server IP would be much appreciated, I'd love to come help with these epic projects... my solo stuff is fun... but I need that multiplayer
Quick question: I'm trying to make a forest, and I was wondering what exactly are the grow requirements for a tree. Does it need a certain amount of space around it... either upwards or on the ground before it grows?
My understanding is that, other than adequate light, it only needs a certain amount of room above it and a dirt block directly below. It is possible for a sapling to grow with only four spaces, but sometimes they will need more. Ten spaces directly overhead should be adequate for any tree.
It is possible for saplings to grow with a single block between them, though you do have to punch through the leaf blocks that inevitably grow over the saplings. It may also be possible to grow them adjacent to one another, although I have not tested it and it may make getting enough light to them difficult. If they are planted above ground, they should receive plenty of light from the sun. Below ground, they will have to get their light from nearby torches. Under the best of circumstances, however, it can sometimes take several game days for saplings to grow.
