My Space Invaders mini test (far right side of the map. Just north of that awesome compass rose) seems to work just fine.. Now its time to make a full scale game board..
Those of you who warp into Lavaland might notice some sort of strange rickety tower.
You might also notice a giant glowing Eye on top.
Pay no attention to the not even 5% finished tower and gaze upon the Eye!
Don't worry, it only hungers for blocky flesh sometimes.
What's the eye made from? And just how damn big is it?
I'm trying for a similar thing on another server, but my original plan of just setting fire to a load of wood looks dumb.
Glass filled with lava, and obsidian eyes.
You wouldn't believe how much of a pain in the dick I had trying to make the eye in first place, and I *still* spent a good hour after it was filled tweaking it to look good.

So I had company over, and I was showing them the home I built with the nice big mining operation I had off the basement. While I was showing off the massive caverns under my house, I wasn't expecting anything to jump out at me. So when a skeleton did right as I was rounding a corner I jumped startled as shit and yelled out scaring the crap out of our 2 cats as well as my boyfriend who was on the couch watching TV.
Man I multiplayer really has loads of bugs right now. Cant host on Win XP and all sorts of funky stuff. Ah well here's hoping we soon get some multiplayer love so we can play survival mp with mobs and stuff.
edit: also the minecraft forum is a wretched hive of scum and villainy for sure! Not going near that place again.
So in offline single player I've got a main mine thats been excellent to me and after about a week of digging downwards I've hit a massive underground cavern with a river and its connected to another massive cavern with lava.
So the issue is that Minecraft is raping me with creeps. I can't get more then ten steps into the cavern before the framerate crashes like I was blowing up 10,000 bricks of TNT. I have to pound "F" to get the world to redraw while holding back to backpeddle out and make it to where the game isn't at a standstill.
I've made a tiny bit of progress placing twenty tourches but that took me almost a HALF HOUR TO MOVE AND PLACE THOSE due to the lag...and to top it off I get rushed by around 15 creepers at a time with more that I can make out in the background moving around.
Digging upward to create a skylight is out of the question...I'm to far down to dig that....So how the hell do I get this cavern lit and/or freed from creeper spawn spots...Killing them is out of the question with the exception of a massive TNT spam, or I could put up a wall of cactus and try to lure then to it and try to kill them off...but it lags so hard.
Any ideas? I'm guessing I'm like 100-150+ blocks underground at the minimum, it takes me a good solid four minutes to go down all the stairs to get to this cavern.
Ok, I'm going to cave. How much does this game cost in american fun-bux? I'm totally going to hunt change and spare bills tomorrow to dump into the bank since I can't wait a week for pay-day anymore, and I'd like to make sure I have enough.

This is what happens when I stay up all night, hopped up on energy drinks. I plot out a massive castle floor plan in Paint.
The multicolored blue strips are a half-step staircase. The flower looking shenanigans are pillars. Brown indicates wooden doors, purple indicates an interior wall separating off rooms. The dark green spots are cactus on the outside. There is a tree farm(Going to be bi-level, the pink dot will be a ladder) plotted out in the top wing, the right wing will be a vault, the left wing I haven't decided. And this is just the bottom floor of the castle. There will be more on top of all this.
Any ideas? I'm guessing I'm like 100-150+ blocks underground at the minimum, it takes me a good solid four minutes to go down all the stairs to get to this cavern.
If only you could send canisters of some flammable gas down on a minecart, followed by a cart a few minutes later with a torch. When I get the cash for it, I have a hunch this game will eat my soul.

The world is only 128 blocks tall from bedrock to ceiling, so you can't be That far down.
In any case, you can set the difficulty of the game in Options at any time, so you could set it to peaceful, go in, set torches, and then put it back.

I can't imagine I can get much deeper, granted I carved out my mine on the tallest mountain I found but I'm a long ass way down. I'm betting I'm at least 90-100 and the lava is at 125. I'm not taking the time to count the blocks but its a long ways down.
I'm against cheesing and changing the difficulty, as nice as it could be I don't want to as I view it as cheating. I'll admit I peeked at the build chart because I couldn't figure out what the blocks I had were (I get some but then others all look the same really...why isn't there a mouse over popup telling you what the block is).
I'm trying to dig around, but even in digging it get laggy due to the number of creatures.
I managed to make it to the Celestial Wastes last night (Desert area in pictures). It is amazing. A MASSIVE pyramid with a huge dungeon inside. I have nearly died three times in it. I got mauled by three creepers at one time, 3 zombies and a skeleton, numerous spiders and individual creepers. I also found a cluster of EVERTHING, but the creeper killed them all for me. All on Easy.
Also, the guy made a spawn location changer. You find an obelisk and remember the password, drop you stuff off in a chest, save and exit. Use the program and the password, POOF! You are now spawning from the new spawn point and can retrieve your stuff. It means I can thoroughly explore celestial wastes without the 5 minute walk back to my default spawn.

$14 USD ($13.87 or so)
Use a bucket to scoop up a lava source and then pour it out where ever would allow it to spread towards the creepers.
Well I'd guess that would confirm your suspicion of that guy crashing the server, Ein. Soon as he joins I get block lag then time out. That's 3 times now you say? Biggity-ban that fool.

Even when I'm exploring on Peaceful, I still get a twinge of fear when I have to push forward into a pitch black opening to place caves. Terrified that something might appear at the edge of my light and recede back into the shadows, even though I know better. (I'll probably never play minecraft again if Herobrine is added. Since he would probably be a passive NPC that moves away from you, there's a chance that he'll still show up on peaceful.)
So how does everyone keep track of cavern exploration in SP? It get's crazy when there's 3 or 4 major tunnels with multiple offshoots, but I don't want to just wall them off when it's a dead end.

I get lost a lot.
One thing to do is use redstone torches near exit shafts. That way at least if you see a redstone torch, you know you are near an exit and can follow the redstone torches out. The rest of the cavern, just use regular torches.
Also, you don't have to wall it off entirely. If you explore a branch and come back out of it, wall it up partially with dirt. Or, carry signs with you and use them to mark the caverns.

So last night I built a glass dome on the top of my tower so I could look out. Then I got the crazy idea that it would be cool to have a waterfall coming off of this :P That was probably a mistake (but still cool!) The water went everywhere and flooded my valley and all the entranceway to my tower -_- I ended up having to make channels to direct the water more evenly, but now I have an awesome moat for my ground base with a wooden bridge and two waterfalls on each side of my door Also, a bad-ass waterslide to get back down from my tower
Ok so after spending a couple weeks with the game I'm pretty far along in my own mine. I've got my own HUGE cavern excavated at the very bottom of the map (lava level area) and have begun strip-mining.
I have 2 main questions:
1. Are there any firm guides for growing trees underground? I've had the oddest experience. I can grow one tree, sometimes. Then if I expand and make an identical space next to that tree, neither grow (2 trees in double the space with identical torch settings.
2. Can you grow grass underground?
My main issue is, I want to basically stay underground. Permanently. I want to be able to mine here and not have to go to the surface since I'm so deep and digging straight up results, ineviteably in a flood. Ideally, that would mean grass so I can spawn pigs for food and not have to farm it so much.
If anyone has any guides or "here's how to grow trees underground" or whatnot?
Hell, if there isn't one, I'll start doing research and make one.

I *think* you just need dirt to plant the tree on, a certain amount of space above for it to grow, and then light (i.e. a torch). Someone correct me if I'm missing something.
I have been. It has been very challenging on Hard. I've lost so many nice tools to falling off the world or being blown up. But finding the dungeons and treasure houses gives a real purpose to what you are building.
Unfortunately I got an earlier version of skylands before the crashes were fixed so I can never visit celestial wastes unless I want to restart my world. I have an extensive system of minecarts that take me between the starting point, Ascension woods treasure houses and Floaty Beach. I really don't want to lose them.

if the cavern is sloping downwards from you, place some lava blocks to flush out the creepers.
if not, dig around the cavern and place lava blocks.
