EDIT:
Regarding Branch Mining:
I always start my branch mining about ten above the lava zone. It is a lot easier to just keep digging the area down, than it is to make a new section of branch mine up a level.
Also, less floor to light, so less risk from spawning monsters.
After watching this I decided to make my own log cabin with a working fire place. It worked just fine, but then it caught fire when I tried burning away some tree a few blocks away.
You can make a trainstation that detects if you are in a minecart or not with track switches and such. You can detect carts. You can toggle switches that trigger track changes.
You can open and close doors, have lighting patterns with red stone torches, turned on and off by logic circuits.
It is pretty nuts.
Most I did, I made a train station that keeps carts ready thanks to boosters. You pull a lever to deploy one to you. If you miss it, it will go back in to the storage booster track. If you are on it, it will send you down the line. At the end, it will take you to an exit loop to let you off. As soon as you are off, it will take it into a seperate storage booster track at that station.
Next I want to set up a circuit to have one station send a cart to another. Unfortunately, circuits can't be too long. They need repeaters (easily done), but also only can operate in a single zone.
I know this will make me sound like a shill, but these guys recently saved my ass. HDD decided to die without notice 2 weeks before my term project was due in my database class. Not to mention all the other files I value greatly. I didn't even panic, I just went out and bought some new hardware, reinstalled Windows and downloaded my data again. In 2 hours I was back to work. $5/mo is a bargain as far as I'm concerned.
Then again, you get the joy of starting over with your addiction! :winky:
Yeah I'm just gonna remake my castle bigger, stronger, faster on Eins server. 40x40x40 with 3 stories, a guard wall and 4 towers and a moat or something like that.

faster? you figured out how to make moving buildings?o_O
Single player games wiped, good bye 40x40x7 castle, 2 story glass storage shed, wheat field, tree farm, dock, 200+ iron bars, gold set, etc etc.
Try making a new save on the same world slot.
I had a BSOD which wiped my main world, however, when i restarted, it had that world corruption glitch and all my stuff minus my inventory was still there, there was just a tiny bit of terrain weirdness on the outer limit of the generated world, as well as my spawn being moved to an island a little bit away from the spawn building I had built around it. Was easily fixed in MineEdit.
I started up expecting a new world and my jaw literally dropped as I swam toward the cobblestone and light in the distance and saw my house.
After watching this I decided to make my own log cabin with a working fire place. It worked just fine, but then it caught fire when I tried burning away some tree a few blocks away.
Oh man, that's great. Is that because he was a moron and had a wood floor underneath, or does fire just spread like that? I haven't really played around with it yet to know how it behaves.

Personally, I think it was staged.
The fact that he had a fountain and three buckets on his hotbar to try and put the fire out is very suspicious.

I shrunk the area down further and tried to make it a bit closer to the version in the game. As a result it looks a bit sloppy in areas (trying to figure out how to fit the stairs up to the second floors is still giving me a bit of trouble) but perfectly symmetrical buildings can be boring anyway. :P
Reddish-brown: Cobble
Orange: Raised wood platforms
Olive-ish: Railings around the raised rood
Light Yellow: Wooden Stairs
Blue: Glass (I need more glass in it for ocean/city views)
I looked around Rapture today and I think northeast of the sub bay might be a good place for it. It feels kind of empty out there and I saw a sign that said buildings were needed out past the forge (forge = Hephaestus?) too. I also spent most of today collecting wood and making a crapton of glass for it. I already have a double chest full of cobblestone, but I might need more.
Edit: And I suppose if anyone objects to a big honkin' red light district, the old version/revision 2 of the blueprints could easily be tweaked into Poseidon Plaza from Fort Frolic. It has a shopping mall feel to it and plenty (maybe too many) shops.
All of yesterday I was able to play online all fine and dandy. But now today when I go to login I lag really badly. Whenever I mine a tile it will reappear ~5 seconds later and then if I am lucky disappear again in another ~10
and then either way I will get a socket error or something and disconnect

Some slightly updated blueprints (didn't have time to slep the text from above on them. Also, refer to the above spoiler for the color key):
Side/Height view with some detail of my idea for the roof:
In the game, the roof of the plaza just had a concrete thing jutting up in the center between the two glass domes. I wanted to keep the concrete thing on the building to keep the roof from being boring... but I thought it would look pretty crappy as is so I plopped another glass dome on it in paint. I as playing with the idea of either hollowing the concrete thing out and making it the building's third floor or even building it all out of glass. No idea what would go up there, though.
Now for the kinda bad news. I hate to bail on multiplayer if you're trying to organize a group to help with it, but I really need a break from the game for a while. I was getting a bit too frustrated trying to come up with ideas for how to reintegrate Siren Alley with the curved window. My idea for just lowering it so the roof of the curved window was even with the cobblestone roof of the alley isn't going to work because it still leaves the building too high above the sea bed (I didn't count actual spaces, but you can see how high up it would be from the tiny bit of frame I put up before stopping)
Plus, my super-addiction to the game's multiplayer is really affecting my performance in classes and I'd like to focus on salvaging my grade for a while. I kinda failed a test because I couldn't pull myself away from the game yesterday to study. :P
You can repurpose the area as you see fit, or anyone can take over the project and modify the design however they want. (This also means that I forfeit my dibs on the mermaid lounge. :P)
My current project, which I would appreciate help in resources (smooth stone mostly) is a 1200s enclosed city with a large castle and small shop area and peasants hovel, with outward guard towers and a high wall.
The current foundation has been layed, it is 40x40 smooth stone and 10x10 dirt/grass surrounding that.
The main castle will be something like 40 tall and the out wall/towers will be 20 or so high.
It is located....somewhere off into the woods on freebuild I believe. You'll know it when you see it it's a huge huge flat foundation mostly surrounded by water near the pirate ships.
This place also needs a name, if you work on it/donate resources feel free to make suggestions.
Server is back up guys, for updated information, hit twitter.com/DCMCPA for rules and updates.
We recently did have a few griefers setting fires, If your stuff was half burnt down and still on fire, you got till the weekend to clean it up or it's a TNT party. It's been sitting like that for almost 2 weeks. Also don't build shit out of wood: people will set it on fire and most of us will laugh.
If anyone would feel generous enough to invite me to the steam group I'd greatly appreciate it. One can only build a tower under the ocean for so long on single player.
I don't post on these forums often, but this... damned game has forced me to do so today.
So.... Legit question:
Is it normal that I've been going to sleep late, getting up too early to compensate for the lateness of sleepy-time, being constantly late for work, moody when I don't get out of work early, and neglecting both friends and family, just to play this completely amazing game; even though I only have a 1.66GHz netbook with openGL 1.4 compatability to play it on?

I've been playing the online client for about a week now. I was going to pick up the full version, but I find out my PayPal account has been frozen from when I got hacked by some chinese dudes that bought a bunch of stuff on Skype.
I don't know if this is kosher or not, I would be willing to send payment via Amazon Payments for someone to hit me up with a key for my account.
If this isn't cool, I will delete this post. Hopefully someone can help me despite just registering. I've been lurking here forever just never made an account.
Thanks, I would love to start playing the single player, it looks like crazy amounts of fun.
Hey AaronKI what do you use to make your blueprints.
Very, very expensive designing software.
The version of MS Paint that came with Windows 2000 set to 10x zoom with the grid on. :P
Wow. I've only discovered that now as well.
So I've gone into my first foray into the very depths of the earth for branch mining. Spent around an hour digging about and got my fair share of diamonds and redstone until I hit a lava pool and tried to find the source. With that, my first time using the bucket to try and get the lava source...
I fell into the lava and died.
And is anyone here having problems with running Minecraft on OSX? I'm on 10.4 Tiger, and the blocks are awfully discolored, and shadow/lighting doesn't work well. I've also experienced transparent blocks at times (though it's pretty useful to see where the caverns are).

Do not believe that the impossible exists. That is why you fail.

Find some dungeons, loot some mossy cobblestone.
That's what I did - you can make a surprisingly large creeper from just 3 dungeons-worth of material 8-)
