So I started a little proper mining operation with the alternating shafts. On my way back up, I got jumped by 4 or 5 skeletons on my stairwell. They were coming out of the natural caverns I had discovered on the dig down. Only I had them all pretty well lit, so I was surprised to see them. My new policy is to wall off a cavern once its been explored. The last thing I need is to have to dodge arrows every time I go back to the surface.

This post has good timing for me. I've been starting a staircase down to the bedrock (in between building a tower on my spawn point) and I've also run into a cavern. No real time to explore it though, especially with a big river running through it, so I guess I'll just wall it off for now.
Also, stupidly falling into said dark cavern was fucking terrifying.
Well, I broke down and bought minecraft. Playing through the single player and I think I'm going to start building a huge structure on a floating island. Also, having multiple creepers jumping off mountains onto me is both amusing and unnerving - I can see that their reputation is well-earned!
Usually when trying to connect to a particular server, what does the message "Took too long to log in" means?
I can connect to other servers fine.
This means that the verification that goes on with minecraft.net when you try joining a SMP server, well, took too long. It's because MC.net is terrible. Just keep trying and you'll make it.
I love you guys; I feel so at home here right now... despite the creepers at my door and spiders spawning from who-knows-where in one of my now labyrinthine mines.
Could someone please clarify obsidian manufacturing to me?
The wiki says a trench of seven lava with a water spout at one end, but that just covered all the lavas. :0
There's a whole bunch way down in the earth, but it's so far.
So I have a question, I'll be exploring in minecraft and just out of the blue I'll hear something that kinda sounds like wind, but a little more eerie. Its just bugging me, not knowing what that sound is. Is it an indication of some sort?

that could be the dark cave sound. When you're near an unlit underground cave there is a sound. You can hear it by digging a 3 deep hole and then covering the top of it. All it means is there is unlit space near you

It's the sound that comes from any dark area in a cave. You don't have in that area, just near it. You could be on the surface, but if a dark area is below you, than it might play the sound.

So THAT is what I keep hearing.
Playing with minecarts I thought they might be the cause.
Then other sounds came, I thought that maybe the Haloween update was partially pushed to my client or something.
I'm in a advanced stage of building a glass-dome under the ocean where I completely drained a limited area of water. I thought I'd share this picture of the bottom of the sea with you.
Note that the black area has been cleared to the lowest level. The red is a part of the wall made out of earth as well, so it's not part of the ocean floor.
It should work fine if you first create a roof one tile beneath the surface. Since every water tile touched by two source tiles also becomes a source tile removing the edge should cover the surface in source tiles. Then simply remove the roof.

[edit] Or make said roof your glass dome.
That's exactly what I'm doing right now. I've removed the lower parts of the wall and now have an area of stones directly beneath the surface. I'll then destroy it starting at the middle. I'll post pictures of how it looks later.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm having trouble visualizing how to do this. Do you know of any videos that show how to do this? I'd even settle for a text diagram.
Okay, side cross-section. W[ater], tone, [G]lass. If you wanted to make an artificial lake this is also a good way to do it, just remove the G layer and the layer of source tiles will fill the empty cavern below with water.

Ok I can't seem to find that Minecraft elitist forum that was linked somewhere. They had numbers on everything and showed which layers of the game had what ores. Can anyone link me?

Was the lava in the trench lava sources? i.e. did you carry each square up in a separate bucket?
if you pour water over a lava source block it turns the lava into obsidian. Because obsidian takes so long to mine, people create forms to pour lava in, then put water on top of the lava (not replacing the lava) to and "cast" obsidian. If you're trying to make a wall, it's much faster (in my experience) than trying to mine obsidian. or maybe it's slower, but there's more action, so I don't die of boredom.
In singleplayer, you cannot make lava a renewable resource, as far as I've seen.
So I tried a smaller version of the 50x50 monster farm, but it didn't work.
Is there a minimum size of a room for monsters to spawn? I went in there in complete darkness (So scary) but none would spawn. I think it's about 20x18x3 right now.
I think it just needs to be dark enough and with enough room for them to spawn. I suspect they also might not spawn if you're too near, since no one wants monsters just popping into existence right in front of them. I have however seen them pop into being on nearby islands.
This is going off memory but I believe I've read that monsters won't spawn within 25 blocks of you or your spawn point, monsters spawn at random anywhere where there the light is 8 or less, and there is a 200 cap on mobs. So if there are caves near by they could be taking some of your mobs. That said this is just from memory. However I got my info in this thread about 20-30 pages back.
It'd be interesting to make a "monster pen" where you have an area, say 50x50 filled with 1 block high water and 3 block high sides dug down so it can be walked into, if you could trick any following you to falling inside and then eventually have the cap of monsters just stuck in that one area.

Which would work until you wandered too far away and that area got de-loaded or whatever. Then all the monsters would disappear and would be free to spawn behind you all night long.

yeah but then you couldn't kill them. and that is fun.

Even more fun is baiting your caves with landmines and luring zombies and creepers to walk over them. Its my new favorite way to mine!
Speaking of...is there a mob spawner that spawns the exploding green cocks of fury? I've found two spider spawners, one skelly spawner, and one zombie spawner so I'm hoping for a creeper spawner so I can start in with my "OMG I HAZ TNT" phase of mining.

A lava pool? If it wasn't moving all the blocks count as source tile there isn't a specific one you have to look for.

Coming up from the bottom, it gets weird, especially when no blocks are adjacent to the water tile you pour out.
