Help me get rid of this cold

People visiting from across the country left me with a virus that I'm not immune to yet, so now I'm on my ass with a cold. Problem is, I'm starting a new job that I am extremely excited about on Monday. Colds for me usually last a week, with the first few days being the worst. Is there anything I can do to get over this faster? I know to push fluids and rest. Any other remedies you guys can suggest?

Sleep as much as you can. Use vicks vapour rub, or whatever the equivalent is where you live. Eat and drink even if you don't feel like it. Don't let rooms become too stuffy.

That's all you can really do.

Try to keep calm as well. Stress and anxiety can adversely affect your immune system, and starting a new job can be a stressful proposition.

If by Sunday you're still feeling crummy, ensure you've got a good cold medicine on hand that isn't going to make you too drowsy or out of it, and will help with your symptoms. Sunday's your dry run for meds if you think you'll need 'em on Monday. Knowing that X is effective, or Y makes you feel like something can help you anticipate and deal with it at your job.

Everything Liiya said. Big fan of the Vicks Vap-o-rub.

If you've got a humidifier, that'll help keep congestion down. Steamy showers work in a pinch.
Gargling with salt water can help.
    Lots of tea.

When you get colds are there any symptoms that hit you particularly hard?

My aunt swears by zinc tablets. Same premise as the OTC Zicam. Take with food or your stomach is a mess. Has worked for me a few times.

Whenever I feel a cold coming on, I always pick up a gallon of orange juice and take it to work with me if I don't finish it at home. Generally it makes the cold incredibly weak if no neutralize it completely in a couple of days. It's worked the last 5 times I've had a cold and I LOVE orange juice.

Just woke up from a nap! Eating/drinking water is good. I will try some dayquill tomorrow. Usually I don't take much for a cold because I figure it'll just run its course, but I will also try oj. As for symptoms that are bad, it's always coughing. Especially at the end, the coughing just gets ridiculous, and sometimes I even end up vomiting. I heard that cough medicine is crap though... anyone have a good way to stop coughing?

Are you actually coughing up anything or is it a dry cough?

Dry man. Productive coughing is the best, dry sucks. It's like there's a little itch at the back of my throat and I just want to stick a fork back there and scratch it.

Sorry guys, but none of that has actually been shown to work in clinical studies that aren't without major flaws.

But you're ruining the placebo effect, which has been shown to work!

Typically for a cold I try to get as much rest as possible and drink lots. I'm not sure if water helps the cold but when you feel yucky you tend not to stay hydrated, and getting thirsty without knowing it certainly doesn't do much to help the "feeling yucky" bit.

Uh well here is something for your throat. Tastes god awful but it works.

    Lemon Juice
    Salt
    Honey
Warm water (I usually just make green tea with this)

Also I take hot hot showers and eat lots of chicken noodle soup. The steam clears out your sinuses. Also I eat spicy food but sometimes I just feel too sick to want spicy food.

I would still go for cough medicine. Try different kinds?

I strongly recommend Aleve-D for getting rid of cold symptoms. I absolutely hate most cold medicines, as they make me feel loopy. Aleve-D is a miracle drug. It lasts 12-ish hours, and makes me totally forget that I have a cold. Until i forget to take it again. It covers everything so well, I forget that I'm sick.

Yeah, it's one of those "gotta see the pharmacist 'cuz meth makers buy it by the fuckload" types of medications, but it really is the only med that works with my colds. CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid all have their store versions of it at cheaper prices...go and compare ingredients.

Aleve-D! Thanks, my husband is out getting some right now.

On a weirder note, I was hella nauseous this morning and actually ended up vomiting but nothing came up because I hadn't eaten anything yet. (no, I am not pregnant lol). This freaks me out a bit because I've never felt nauseous from a cold before...anyone else experienced this?

How are you feeling now in the nausea department?

When I get colds, mucus and shit tends to drip down the back and get swallowed during the night. In the morning, combine that with the general crappy status and sometimes my body decides it's a fine time to give puking a try. After that, I'm more or less fine for the rest of the day as far as stomach stress is concerned.

It's really one of those "keep an eye on it" situations. Unless something more unique appears, most symptoms are associated with far too many things to jump to conclusions. If you get worse or still feel pukey on Monday, it might be time to give your doctor a call.

Well, I took the Aleve-D and boy, it works! I'm not 100%, but I'm a lot better than I usually would be around this time. Hopefully another 2 nights of rest will be enough to get me in working order.

No more nausea, thank god. I hate that more than coughing.

Thanks alot guys, you've been a great help!

Just this saturday I suddenly caught a terrible cold, I was out with some friends, and suddenly my throat started to swell up, so bad I could barely talk and my sinuses started to clog, that I almost felt I was going to drown in my own mucus.

Next day of course, I've got all the cold symptoms.

I find natural remedies to be the best, besides rest and lots of fluids, I drank some freshly squeezed OJ, which actually relieved some of the throat pain, and bought a special honey extract at a natural stuff store. It has:

Propoleum, Echinacea, Eucalyptus extract, Gnaphallium oxyphyllum extract, Crescentia alata extract, malva parviflore extract and sambucus mexicana extract. Yeah very herby. 1 spoonful every 4 hours, and in less than 48 hours I was feeling incredibly well.

Of course you started feeling better ~48 hours after your cold was at its worse, you have an immune system. It had nothing to do with your magic honey.

I hate, hate getting colds. So I'm a strong believer of medicating myself strongly until I get better.

What I do, and get's me through it, is taking the Benylin cough/cold stuff. Last's 12 hours - which is helpful since I work 12 hour shifts. Pick the Benylin according to your symptoms. Another one that I find works really well to relieve symptoms are the Buckley's tablets.

If you're having nasal congestion and you feel like you can't breath - get a nasal spray. That stuff is AWESOME. Makes you feel like you're normal and not sick. Don't get the water/saline nasal sprays. Those are useless I find - but you can try them first. Get one of the one's with actual medication in them. I believe they're corticosteroids in them. Here in Canada you can buy them off the self. Not sure in the USA. Though I have to warn you that stuff can get addictive. Once the cough symptoms go away, and the only thing your feeling is congestion, stop using the spray. Bare with the congestion without the spray for the next few days and you'll be right as rain.

This is what I do to get me through a day's work if I'm sick. Does me well until I can get some sleep and fight the cold.

I also second the WATER and SLEEP treatment. Help's your body recover and fight of the cold. Hope you feel better!
