Interesting that PoP is going to be PS3 only.

How much space does the PC versions of the games take up? If it's more than 4.7 GB, it may not be possible to store all the games on a single DVD.

Why wouldn't a PC user just install it to their harddrive from multiple DVD's?

I mean, crap, I have games bigger than 4.7gigs that I got through Steam.

So maybe Epic needs to get decent at 2D before moving on to something more complex like 3D.

I've been trying to figure out what this means for the last 3 minutes, and it's just hurting my head. o_O

The reason I ask is that the XBox uses DVD's, yeah? That would mean the HD 3D Remakes might not be able to fit on a single disc. Which would be why Ubisoft aren't making an XBox version.

    I could be wrong.

I think he's talking about the 360 release there, as in they probably don't want to print 3 DVD's with every PoP Collection on 360.

My guess? Ubisoft will just go with PSN/XBLA seperate releases in the US. Sucks for achievement whores.

See, he's saying that all the stuff made on the UE3 engine is for 2D displays and looks terrible, and that they should try and fix that before attempting 3D displays.

Not 2D graphics versus 3D graphics.

3D displays is going to make describing games weird as fuck. If there was a Mario Galaxy for 3DS, it'd be a 3D 3D platformer. Paper Mario for 3DS is a 3D 2D game.

Oh god, I just realized how much I want Retro to make a 3DS Metroid Prime game. I want one so bad.

And demo units. Remember how badly scratched up DS demo units got back in 2004? It's going to be even more painful and infuriating with the 3DS.

Man, I really hope Western Devs get over themselves for the 3DS. That is my biggest complaint about portables--no Western titles. For whatever reason, most Japanese titles rarely do it for me, with a few exceptions.

Hell, I even scavenged the depths and play Sonic Chronicles! And was hoping for a sequel!

Please, Western Devs, give me a story + gameplay experience on my handheld that I can be proud of.

Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll port over KotR to the 3DS... That would keep me busy for a while.

    ..Yeah right.

Oh, I know there are some. Locke's Quest is one of my fav DS games. Scibblenauts had great potential, which I'm hoping 2 will fix, but not really a "story". Drawn to Life was also full of possibilities, and a decent bit of fun.

I really want Clash of Heroes, and obviously Puzzle Quests were time-sucking carts as well. Geometry Wars, while awesome, didn't have any story elements to speak of.

I know there are some good western games, but there's very little in the way of Western RPGs on the system, or anything that feels like a movie or book.

I'm hoping with Metal Gear and such coming to the 3DS that that will start to change, however. I love me some cinematic moments (and by that I don't mean just cinematics, but events that really feel cinematic).

Finally, the long awaited third Shenmue game has been announced! :D

The third Shenmue game has been announced at last! Sega is currently developing Shenmue City for Yahoo! Japan and DeNA's new Yahoo! Mobage service.

Yahoo! Mobage is a PC-based social games service that saw its grand opening today. The service was running in beta since September 21. The name combines Yahoo!'s name with the name of DeNA's hugely popular "Mobagetown" mobile service.

Shenmue City was listed by Yahoo! Japan and DeNA today as one of the premier titles for the new service. A press release from the two firms says that Shenmue City is the first entry in the Shenmue series in 8 years and will be released this Winter.

The release refers to the game as "the third entry" in the series, although this probably isn't meant to mean that it's Shenmue III.

Shenmue City will feature alongside such games as One Million Person Ambition of Nobunaga from Tecmo Koei and Persona Social from Atlus on the new service. Yahoo and DeNA say they have over 100 titles lined up, including games from Electronic Arts' Playfish brand.

To sample Yahoo! Mobage for yourself, visit the portal site.

How to increase brand value, easy, if your Sega you de list all the bad Sonic games.
SEGA has removed Sonic games with average Metacritic scores from shop shelves to combat franchise fatigue.

"Any Sonic game with an average Metacritic has been de-listed," SEGA's SVP of EMEA Jurgen Post told MCV.

"We have to do this and increase the value of the brand. This will be very important when more big Sonic releases arrive in the future."

SEGA's set to release three Sonic games in the coming months: downloadable title Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 (the iPhone version's out now), Nintendo platforms exclusive Sonic Colours and Kinect racing game Sonic Free Riders.

Post continued: "We could make a lot of money on back-catalogue Sonic titles, but let's keep the number of Sonic games available under control. Otherwise you can have cannibalisation. If there are ten Sonic games on the shelves, with people seeing Sonic Rush DS or Sonic Rush Adventure, this may not help our overall strategy."

In August Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka told Eurogamer making both old and new fans happy with a single game is virtually impossible.

Episode 1 is intended to rekindle the classic 2D gameplay fans fondly remember from the blue hedgehog's glory years on the Mega Drive. And Sonic Colours, which plays like the daytime stages from 2008's panned Sonic Unleashed, is designed for fans of Sonic's 3D outings.

SEGA's 3D Sonic games have come in for stinging criticism from veteran Sonic fans in recent years. Sonic Unleashed disappointed many upon its 2008 release. The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions managed a paltry 4/10 in Eurogamer's review. The Wii version was better, though.

The 3D woe continued last year with Wii-exclusive Sonic and the Black Knight, which suffered the same fate as Unleashed.

Sega could also, oh I don't know, stop trying to make more new shitty Sonic titles and instead try creating something new for a while before making more Sonic. So that they have some other brand to fall onto if Sonic continues to fail.

Sonic is not Mario. He does not make a game instantly awesome and sell well.

World of Warcraft(R) Subscriber Base Reaches 12 Million Worldwide

IRVINE, Calif., Oct 07, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that the subscriber base for World of Warcraft(R), its award-winning massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), now exceeds 12 million players worldwide. This milestone was reached in the wake of the mainland Chinese launch of World of Warcraft's second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King(R), and also as global anticipation continues to mount for the December 7 release of the game's third expansion, Cataclysm(TM).

"The support and enthusiasm that gamers across the world continue to show for World of Warcraft reaffirms our belief that it offers one of the best entertainment values available today," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We are as committed as ever to taking the game to new heights, and we look forward to demonstrating that with Cataclysm in December."

Since debuting in North America, Australia, and New Zealand on November 23, 2004, World of Warcraft has become the most popular subscription-based MMORPG around the world. It was the bestselling PC game of 2005 and 2006 worldwide, and finished behind only World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade(R), the first expansion pack for the game, in 2007. For 2008, the World of Warcraft series represented three of the top five bestselling PC games, with Wrath of the Lich King finishing the year at #1, and in 2009, World of Warcraft titles claimed three of the top six spots.*

I had thought they were already at 12 million, but whatever. Exceeding it by how much, though, that makes me curious.

Regardless, those numbers are that big for a variety of reasons, not just because of things Blizzard has done with the game past or present, and not because of anything Activision did with it. They shouldn't rest on their laurels or pat themselves on the back.
China loves it, not something that can really be said of any other Western MMO to date, and it's polished and content rich and stable beyond belief. It's community and ease of access, it's ability to run well on lower end PCs and Macs natively, and it's overall structure have ensured this dominance. But these things arose also out of the utter failures of other MMOs and the less widespread appeal and polish and niche styles of other MMOs. Too many WoW clones and people who want to imitate the cash cow, thus elevating it further.

I really hope they can take the game in a better direction with Cataclysm then they have been doing with Wrath up to now, and keep those numbers up when other high budget, highly anticipated MMOs like SW:TOR and GW2 come out next year. Because they are overdue for a decline.

They still better not piss off any of their Chinese distributors again ethier, like they did a while ago, or they risk that number being halved.

EDIT: We do not need another MMO failure because kid's parents don't want their kids playing a game for hours and hours on end and shelling out money for the privilege. That's what WoW is for. And Nintendo has no interest or experience creating such a massive, long term undertaking. A Pokemon MMO would be a bad idea, even though I understand and appreciate the appeal. We can get some of that through other, less expensive means anyways.

They seem to do so for WoW so why not Pokemon which everyone knows and kids go nuts over.

Somebody really, REALLY likes iD and Bethesda.
Today, id Software and Bethesda Softworks' parent company received a massive infusion of cash. This morning, ZeniMax Media announced that private venture-capital firm Providence Equity Partners is investing $150 million in the Bethesda, Maryland-based media firm for "increased game development, expanded publishing operations, and strategic acquisitions."

This isn't the first time Providence has made a massive investment in ZeniMax. In October 2007, the firm announced it was investing $300 million to "increase game development and publishing, facilitate acquisitions, and finance massively multiplayer online games."

While ZeniMax Online's MMOG--widely suspected to be based on the Elder Scrolls franchise--did not surface in the intervening three years, ZeniMax did say today its development resources have tripled. That was in large part due to the reportedly $105 million acquisition of id Software, the developer behind the Quake and Doom franchises, as well as the upcoming Rage. Then this past August, ZeniMax bought Arx Fatalis creator and BioShock 2 contributor Arkane Studios for an undisclosed sum.

It's not just about the subscription thing ethier. A MMO is a big project, a big longterm thing. And it needs to be balanced and tuned just right and have content and all those bells and whistles people would expect from a IP of this magnitude. It might write itself for a while, but imagine the headache that will come from balancing the all important Pokemon Battle PvP.

I don't know, maybe it could work, but I don't think Nintendo or really anyone has enough experience and incentive to do it.

Nintendo announced this morning a special Mario-branded Wii that will release on November 11 in Japan.

Come on NoA! Get with the program!

And in other news, PSP dev kits are not going to be available to any newcomers as of November:
SCEE has sent notice to developers it will no longer be selling current PSP development past November 15.

According to a notice sent to a Spanish distributor, via PSPgweber, SCEE will “no longer be selling the PSP development tool (dtp-t2000a) or testing tool (dtp-h2500a)” and those that are in need of the kits should order them in advance before November 15 hits. Sony will then advise developers when a new model becomes available.”

We contacted SCEE regarding this new information and were told the certification on the current kits was due to expire.

“Due to the certification on the current development and test tools expiring, we will be stopping selling them on November 15,” said the SCEE rep. “However, we will continue to provide loan stock for registered and new developers, until a new certified model is available.”

The news is certain to fuel ongoing PSP2 rumors.

A developer has now openly claimed to have a dev kit in-house, and a source of ours has said the handheld will be released around holiday 2011, putting it later in the year than 3DS in March.

    Dun dun DUN!

Do we know when dev kits for the last generation stopped being sold? Then again I can't imagine a huge demand for PSP dev kits in the west.

    Wait..... O_o

There's been talk about some kind of Shenmue MMO. Is that what this is talking about? Because the game is otherwise essentially dead.

Well launching within the same year will at least give the PSP2 some kind of chance, however slim. Pricing could be interesting.

Do we think that this is the model with the touch screen on the back?

Interesting that PoP is going to be PS3 only.

How much space does the PC versions of the games take up? If it's more than 4.7 GB, it may not be possible to store all the games on a single DVD.

Why wouldn't a PC user just install it to their harddrive from multiple DVD's?

I mean, crap, I have games bigger than 4.7gigs that I got through Steam.

I think he's talking about the 360 release there, as in they probably don't want to print 3 DVD's with every PoP Collection on 360.

My guess? Ubisoft will just go with PSN/XBLA seperate releases in the US. Sucks for achievement whores.

    It does? That's 3 platinums/s-ranks right there! :P

Yeah and I'm saying if they do get XBLA releases, they'll only be worth 200 points each. Microsoft are pretty strict in that department compared to Sony (eg, Call of Duty Classic had a fully trophy list + platinum on PS3, but just a 200 point achievement list on 360). And even if Ubisoft did release the PoP Collection on 360 at retail, there's no real chance Microsoft would let them give out 3000 points for one release.

Western developers ARE supporting the 3DS, just like they supported the PSP and DS. They just really suck at it. There are a handful of western developers that actually understand handelds well but the vast majority of them just try to make a console game and shove it onto the system. Just watch all the third parties try to make shooters for the 3DS and fuck it up because oh shit, there isn't a second analog stick.

Also, why would Metal Gear change anything? It's not a western game. And if the absurd number of Metal Gear's on the PSP didn't change much, why would a MGS3 port suddenly be revolutionary?

Sounds like they're just preparing a new, probably cheaper, line of dev kits. Oh and I'm pretty sure Sony still sells PS2 dev kits.
