    I would take Class 2 and see if you can get a research apprenticeship with the professor from Class 1. That will help you far more then just taking his class would.

    Oh, well then, why do you even care how respected Prof 1 is in the field? I mean, best case scenario is you might get a reference out of him after graduation, but from just one class that hardly seems likely. I'd just go with class 2.

    is there a chance you will try to work with Prof #1 post graduation?

    if yes, then take that section

    if no then i say go with 2 and a different section.

    just because you take a class with an "A-lister" doesn't give you any added benefit. If however you want to work with him or get references or whatever, than absolutely take his section.

    the elective is nice since it is interesting to you, but honestly if you are going to try and get into it, you will probably relearn most of it in the long run regardless.
