Then again matches would take even longer with animations activated.

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.
I was almost sad for a few moments that I day one-ed this game, but then realized I DID get many hours of happy fun out of this before I went "this game is too easy and breakable, not playable anymore" So it shall gather dust for a month or two and hopefully it will be more playable in the future.

My view is that I expect one hour of fun per dollar I put in. Minimum, naturally.
$60 game? I have to get 60 hours of fun out of it, or I begin to feel like I should have waited.
Given that I spent ~$35 on Civ 4 BTS and steam says I have spent some 234 hours playing it; I more than got my money's worth, and I'm willing to buy Civ V at full price on faith. In the 2 months since release, I've clocked 38 hours played.

Yep, I got 52 hours on the week of release and haven't touched it since. At $1/hr plus discussion (online and IRL) and reading, it was well worth it from that alone.
Waiting for cumulative changes to be ground-breaking before I jump back in.
So, I'm a Civ newbie who got Civ5 as a birthday present. I've enjoyed it so far, sort of, but there are some issues that bug me.
I think the thing I like the least so far is how fast research typically goes vs how slow production usually goes. It doesn't seem to make any sense that I can research 3-4 technologies before I can build one building or produce one Settler. I've learned how important city placement is to balance food/gold/production gains to make production a little faster but it still jars me.
Another thing I wish I could do is limit the game to a particular age. Can I do that? I looked at the advanced options but it looked like I could only choose to start a game in a particular age.
Lastly, a hypothetical question; say I've got a City on the coast and there's an ocean hex with Fish in them. Do I only get the increased Food output of that hex if I have fishing boats there? Same question for pastures on cows and farms on wheat, that sort of thing.

Research is fast, but not that fast. You're doing something wrong. Build some mines, or leave some forests and keep in mind that not all cities have to be production cities.

The tile has to be "Improved" (farm, fishing boats, etc) in order to give you the bonus.

The tile has to be "Improved" (farm, fishing boats, etc) in order to give you the bonus.
As soon as a tile comes under your influence, it will give you a base bonus, that you can see by mousing over the tile.
Then, each improvement you build will add a bonus based on the improvement, and you can see what those are going to give by mousing over those before building.
Finally, once you have your tile improved, you can mouse over it to see the new total bonus.

I'm pretty sure the fishing boats only give you gold bonuses on water tiles. The food bonus just happens by working the tile in your city.

So I played some more of this, and I found a neat mod that I liked, but I think it's conflicting with the new diplomacy system somehow
See, I can't really seem to find any of the new diplomacy features like the tooltips and everything
But I kinda don't wanna remove the mod, because the mod is awesome
Basically it removes gifting gold entirely from city state diplomacy and instead relies upon the creation of relatively cheap diplomatic units (messengers and the like) and they go over to the city state and use the Conduct Diplomatic Mission thing that I think a Great Person can have if they're an artist or something
It consumes the unit, but gives you a big boost in relationship and even a small amount of culture and gold for you
It feels way better than the current system and I think they replaced the "Give Gold" button with a "Request Diplomatic Mission" button which is really helpful whenever you want to improve your relations but don't want to wait around for them to ask you something

The Mac version has just appeared in Steam, and is Steam Play enabled, so anyone who owns the Windows version can now grab the Mac versions. Mine's downloading now; hopefully performance is close enough to Windows.
So, did anything ever happen with the D2D pre-order DLC code?
There's no pay-for DLC out yet, is there?
e: besides Babylon. hmmm.
Unless you got the Deluxe edition, then there isn't any paid DLC out yet for you. I assume they're waiting for the first non-Babylon DLC so they don't have to generate two sets of codes.
Update 18/10/2010: The first batch of changes are now available! Here they are:
AI
Worker AI improvements .
Update to tactical AI pillaging code. Additionally, always check to make sure it’s not trying to pillage in an enemy dominance zone.
AI victory emphasis improvements (more efficient end-game when focusing on Science and Diplo victories).
AI should colonize other continents regularly.
AI will emphasize production of an Ocean going explorer unit when the time comes.
Adjust Napoleon to make him more likely to go for culture.
More aggressive second wave expansion (mostly off shore) after initial empire building and consolidation has occurred.
Optimization when finding routes (pathfinder improvement).
Multiple tweaks and bug fixes.
AI will now build ranged and mobile units more in line with the flavor settings.
Multiple defensive AI tweaks.
Never use ranged units to provide flanking bonuses. (Added 11/18)
Improve AI use of protected bombard attacks (melee in front, ranged in the rear). (Added 11/18)
Worker priority adjustments (prioritize pillaged tiles, etc.). (Added 11/18)
Further pathfinder optimization. (Added 11/18)
GAMEPLAY
Cities heal more quickly.
Only allow one upgrade per unit from a goody hut.
Science building track adjustments (cost, specialist slots, GP Points, etc). (Added 11/18)
Amount of damage caused during naval combat increased. (Added 11/18)
Melee horse units combat value lowered, and now receive a penalty when attacking cities. (Added 11/18)
Lowered bonuses received from Maritime city-states.(Added 11/18)
Removed maintenance from defensive buildings. (Added 11/18)
Multiple unit upgrade track adjustments. Most (but not all) units now have a full upgrade path from start to finish. (Added 11/18)
Open terrain penalty lowered.(Added 11/18)
Policies must be selected the turn they are earned. (Added 11/18)
Promotions must be selected the turn they are earned. If it’s as a result of combat, then the beginning of the next turn. (Added 11/18)
UI
Tweaked the single-player score list to hide the civs of unmet ai players.
Added game option to disable automated workers from removing features. (Added 11/18)
DIPLO
AI's attitude towards you is now visible in the diplo screen and diplo drop-down.
Added info tooltip for an AI leader's mood. Lists things that are making an AI player happy/upset.
New diplo system: Declaration of Friendship (public declaration with diplomatic repercussions).
New diplo system: Denounce (public declaration with diplomatic repercussions).
New custom leader responses (Serious Expansion Warning, Aggressive Military, Luxury Exchange, Borders Exchange, Gift Request).
MODDING
Parent category counts now include counts of child categories.
Selecting/deselecting a category now automatically selects/deselects it's children and its parent.
Tweaked category name truncation to better fit names.
Hide categories w/ no children and a count of 0.
Added support for fallback languages (if mod is not translated, fall-back to English so text keys are not showing).
MISC
Fixed save format which causes saves to increase the memory footprint of the game drastically when loading frequently over the course of the game.
So, no more saving policies or promotions (no more saving up heals!). Horse rampage to be nerfed. ICS via maritimes to be nerfed, too.
I'm not really liking the direction the fixes are taking - the player should be presented with tradeoffs, not hard caps - but I guess the issues go away.
You won't be able to save up policies anymore? That's annoying. I guess the Babylonian slingshot is going to be less useful.
At least the AI changes sound promising, especially the part about keeping melee in the front and ranged in the rear.
EDIT: I would have rather seen them go in the opposite direction and let you save up policies AND free techs. They could balance it by not letting you spend them all at once; every time you cashed one in you'd have to wait 3~5 turns or something, varying with the game length, before you could use another one. The wait time wouldn't even be noticeable to the people who spend them as they get them, while preventing others from doing huge sudden tech/policy rushes.
It means that optimal play entails being really careful about working artists, etc., I guess. You would probably still be able to slingshot, and slingshotting will still be optimal, but it'll be hellishly tedious.
The general inferiority of the Liberty and Tradition trees makes Honor more likely, so I guess early rampages will be more important. I daresay this is a nerf on civs which generate culture earlier rather than later, e.g., France.
Well... my name is in the credits for this game for beta so... I obviously can't say too much...
However, let's say I'm not proud of this one. Sorry to make my first post fairly negative but eh... just an opinion and I'll give some postitive things of why I'm here...
In any case, I heard of Penny Arcade and checked a few links people linked to me from time to time but I admit, Tycho's character in poker night, really grabbed me, can totally relate. Liked a lot of stuff between him and the Heavy, was excellent, I love random chatter, by far best 5 dollars I've ever spent. Then I read some comics in a quick bit and came to stuff on civ 5. Sure hope Gabe and Tycho get into other random games like this, I just love chatter.
I am with Gabe on this obviously minus the second window :P. It takes way too long to do anything of significance. There are elements that clearly aim at a casual market, but elements like ridiculously silly micro, poor controls and UI and the tedious time it takes to achieve mini goals (which is what makes civ addictive in the first place) it often makes me wonder what is going on!
If I have difficulty stomaching it as a civ veteran who can sometimes sit through an entire game of civ 4 on epic, what chance does a standard casual player have and the few I know who tried it (despite my desperate urge to caution them, which would tragically break my NDA) have not completed a full game.
It's not any of the design features, i.e polices, city states, 1UPT, or hexes that are bad, its the way the entire package (other things too more) comes together.
Now I recommend to 'Gabe' he play civ 4 if he hasn't already. This way its only about 9 turns until your people know what a horse is, and maybe in about 70 or less, he can be using those horses to kick someone's butt if that's what he goes for. So it isn't as graphically pretty? Well uh er um... er... the wonder videos look better in civ 4 :P.

Eh. The 33% wonder bonus on the trad tree is really powerful when combined with the 100% culture bonus if the city has a wonder on the freedom tree. Especially if you play Egypt. You don't even need to have a small empire to make that do well for you. I like this combination, and while I don't go for it every game, I do a fair bit of the time. The rest of the tradtion tree, I agree, is horrid.
So, will PC users be able to go head to head with Mac players online?
Right now, the PC is patched to 1.006 something while Mac is at 1.09, so they can't play together - but does anyone know if this will happen eventually? I tried looking online and can't find anything.

FWIW, Gabe and Tycho don't read the forums. Emailing them might have better success.
As for wonders: I'll see your wonder and raise you a couple of Horsemen. None of the wonders are so crucial that they can make or break a game, with the solitary exception of the Forbidden Palace. And that's decently late anyway. Great People are not terribly useful compared to yet another settler.
So I encountered starvation in the game. Why isn't this in the civilopedia?
Also, do units consume food? According to the city pop-ups, I would assume no... so, free units?
One tool-tip said that one citizen will die when I run out of stored food... but where do I see where my stored food is?
I get that often when I automate workers who change farm improvements to tradeposts and mines.
I cannot wait for the patch that allows you to set automated workers to not change any improvements that have already been made.
I remember my last game where all of my automated workers left my second continent that was mostly unimproved, to come change the improvements on my starting continent.
Mac version completely borked. Doesn't support the latest version of Mac OS X and doesn't support the newest Macbook Pros. Great job...

Nothing officially confirmed yet, but there's rumblings on the Steam forum and Macrumors forum. I have the latest MBP and got the black screen on launch, had to use an official work-around for a different recognized issue, and then someone noticed that the 330M card isn't on the official supported list (current theories are that they didn't check the game versus the 10.6.5 developer beta which had a lot of graphics updates for WoW and such).
I've filed about five support tickets today with Aspyr, regarding the black screen, mouse cursor and CTDs.

Considering that I have a new MBP and my wife may have purchased Civ 5 for me, I am not pleased at this development.
What pisses me off on a fundamental level, is that I bought the DVD version for archival purposes. In 10 years, I was hoping to be able to pull out the DVD and install it again to play... but that doesn't work anymore, does it, because firstly games are broken on launch and requires patches and secondly the DRM needs to ping servers which probably won't be alive in 10 years.
(And yes, even if Valve promised to "remove" their DRM if Steam ever went away, where are you supposed to get all patches from, since they were distributed through Steam instead of downloadable archives?)
No wonder computer gaming is turning to casual games and social media. Nothing is made to last anymore.

I have many issues with your original post, but I don't quite have the words without it sounding like I'm biting your head off.
In summation: things change. If you want 'your' software to work in 15 (or 20, regardless) years, then I heavily suggest making copious use of the 'back-up this game' feature steam provides.
I'm looking for (educational/historical) Civ V scenarios that could be tied into a college course (freshman level or below, nothing fancy). There isn't too much up at civfanatics yet. Is there a better place to find scenarios?

The solution's going to come from where it's always come: the tiny, niche, enthusiast community.
Very true. Unfortunately, on the Mac, that niche is so small that I don't think it currently even exists.
Anyway, I have my DOS CD-ROM of Masters of Magic running on my Mac with DosBox, so who knows what will happen in 10 years.

I have the 2.66ghz MBP with 8gb ram and a 512mb 330M graphics card.
