Man, I hated that Spider-Man game Grimthwacker posted so much.
Taking away health in the form of a timer so you have to pump in more quarters? Pfft. When you're at the arcade looking for a game to kill time with a minimal amount of quarters, it doesn't work!

I never saw the original Gauntlet in the mall arcade or any of the bigger Chuck E Cheese's establishments (which was Show Biz Pizza, that was the style at the time).
Back then, It was always the X-Men arcade game, which was packed, the Simpsons arcade game, or you go to the TMNT arcade game. That Spider-Man game was there but only sparsely played because once you saw that time thing, it wasn't as good a value as the others. Even as 8 year olds we knew that!
I'm watching that Spider-Man playthrough though, and it looks pretty good, some cheap hits here and there but that's expected. I never really got past the second level, and whenever you played with someone they would always steal the health pickups.
Can anyone make out the music in this? All I could tell was that Professor X's voice was different (higher pitched at least, maybe from re-recording or possibly from using the original recordings but played back at a higher sample rate), music during that cutscene seemed the same. Hard for me to hear anything with the commentator guy talking so much.
Not sure why they have to change the lifebars, but this article shows ones that are different from the original arcade AND the ones shown in the video above:
Maybe they'll let you pick one you like best? Hope we can get the originals somehow. But on the bright side they seem to be shifted out of the playing area!
Ah, crazy Japanese animu openings; always so enthusiastic about what they're showing. Plus, some of the most gratuitous use of Engrish since: YOU WA SHOCK!!!
I think we can all agree that Capcom's Marvel offerings were all pretty superior to the majority of games released by other companies, especially in the arcades, but there were some pretty good ones here and there. Anybody play the Spider-Man beat-'em-up (I think it was made by Sega) featuring Black Cat, Namor and Hawkeye? Y'know, THIS one. Wasn't that bad, really.
Seems like the music will still be awesome at least, and if there's 6 player local support on PS3 that will be hard for me to turn down. But losing the original voices is very disappointing, I wonder if that was a legal decision (as the article kind of implies) or if they just wanted to improve the audio quality. TMNT on XBLA managed to get the original voices, I was really hoping something like that would happen again (although even that game had a few slight changes).

Yeah I'm gonna need to hear some lines before I pony up cash for this now
Yeah, Dazzler was more useful than Cyclops at least: her special had a larger blast radius, and her ground attack had more distance.
Another "when I was a kid" X-Men story... yeesh. So when I lived in Sacramento, there was a grand opening (or was it re-opening with new management? I can't remember for sure) for this theater that was basically a series of domes with stadium seating. Neat place, but what I remember most was that on their opening day they made their arcade games free: basically by exposing two wires from behind the coin box that you could press together to give yourself a coin.
Some jerk of a kid had given 700 lives to Cyclops and then left (some other kid was kneeling below him basically pressing the wires together over and over), and of course I was next in line when he split. I was stuck playing the worst character through the whole game. I wasn't going to complain of course because it was free, but Cyclops sucks... I'm pretty sure the kid did it on purpose, knowing that Cyclops sucks. He was an early griefer.
ah century theatres... good times
Wait, pressing two wires together...aren't most arcade machines equipped with a "free play" mode via dip switches?
I distinctly remember there being wires hanging out from where the coin box was. Whether they were doing it wrong or what, I don't know. But I remember the other kid sitting down there pushing the wires together over and over.
Also, yes! Century Theaters! ... you weren't that kid, were you? Jerk! lol
It doesn't make sense why they did it with wires at all. It should have had the dip switch/credits per play setting. I mean did it have the 1p/2p buttons?
Anyway everyone knows nightcrawler is always the best.
I definitely don't doubt it, the Professor X clip in the IGN video preview is done rather well, and the little bit I can make out of Magneto seems good (I hear "KILL YOU" being said before he's cut off in one instance). It just sucks that we'll be getting imitations period, especially for something selling itself based on nostalgia. But regardless of the reason behind it, it's good to know that they appear to be making a strong effort to replicate them as close as possible.

Nightcrawler is always the best. At least, he was the best for me as a kid with limited quarters, since it was easier to keep him alive by just jump-kicking back and forth until everything was dead.
Spiderman featuring the X-Men vs. Arcade was shit hard
That game was annoying. Let's be Gambit, but have the level be forced sidescrolling so you don't have time to be a badass. Be Storm, but the entire level is claustrophobic and underwater.

No sorry the best is still Colossus because of his mutant power

Actually Nightcrawler's didn't really make any sense either. Turning glowy for a few seconds and running around really fast?
That's why I liked the Genesis X-Men 2; Nightcrawler had super-useful teleporting that you could use whenever you wanted.

Nightcrawler is the best. The only thing I'm not down with was when he started hating on Colossus because of the whole gay thing

No his mutant power in the game, silly
Where he explodes and goes "WHOOOAOOAAAARRRGH"
Oh right. Yeah that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Its like the game creators only saw glimpes of the cartoon and just assumed they knew what the powers did.
Actually that explains Dazzler being pretty good in the game

In most cases, there is no concussive force. The only writer to have it show any sort of impact like that was Claremont, most of the others make it seem like it's more heat than concussive.

Which can make people jump back in pain, and inanimate objects do anything from expand to melt to explode violently. So it's not converting sound to PUNCH, but fuzzy comic physics still apply.

That's a shame. I may not buy this now until I get a chance to hear more of the voices, and the things they say.
A big part of play that game was its charm, and without the poor translations and bad voice acting, it's going to lose some of that.
Particularly Magneto

In the 21st century, evil mutants led by Magneto aim to destroy the world.
Humans could do nothing against the power of the evil mutant.
The only hope is...
X-Men?!
Just like the ones in Symphony of the Night.
