Nobody seemed to be making a thread for this game, so I figured i'd do it myself.
DSIware is finally getting some decent games, and the top of the heap is this little gem. A sequel to the old GBC platformer, Shantae, Risky's revenge had you step back into the roll of half-genie Shantae, using her whipping hair, and animal transformations to protect Sequin Land from the pirate queen Risky Boots.
It is a platform game, harkening back to the classics (Metroid is often seen as a big influence).
Most of the reviews out sofar are very positive, stating how this is probably the most ambitious DSIware game out right now, looking far more like a normal cartridge game than a downloader.
WARNING: Most of the main characters in this game are female, and dressing with modesty in mind is not something that occurs to them, if you know what I mean.

Looking from the screenshots, this game seems to be a standard platformer. There's dozens of quality platformers on the DS and other platforms. So, apart from being perhaps the only decent DSiWare, why should I get this?
Why did you get any of those other quality platformers?
Many reasons, but probably mostly because there was a game mechanic I really liked (but I admit to buying that Japanese starfish game when I was in Tokyo because god DAMN those graphics were cute).
In the videos for this game, I've only seen a transformation game mechanic very much like the one in Wonderboy 3, and I don't really care much for that. But I guess I'm weird because I never liked that game (always preferred Wonderboy 2 which I think is one of the best platformers there is). Also, the streaming videos which can be found on Youtube seemingly manages to show the entire game without even once filming the second screen... which makes me think that I'd rather wait for an iPhone port.
I admit that before I went to Youtube I never knew that this was a GBA game originally, so kudos to the developers for finally getting it released!
Shantae is not coming to the iPhone. Did Contra 4 or Mighty Flip Champs go to the iPhone?
I think my brother still has the original around somewhere; I never got around to playing that, so it's probably time to dig out the ol' GBA and give it a whirl. Too bad I never bothered to upgrade from my old DS original, so unless this winds up coming to WiiWare too Risky's Revenge will have to wait for a while.
Maybe I'll check it out when I get a 3DS.
What this man said. I'd love to play this game, but I just have a Lite, hence I can't. This makes me sad.
Ahem. Anyway, the game still holds up well today; I'm impressed with how well Shantae is animated and the mechanics are nice and simple . . . apart from the gajillion pits around that I have to worry about. I should always, always keep a good supply of Float Muffins on hand at all times, huh?
Shantae is one of the highest rated DS games of all time, higher than all Mario/Zelda games, tied with the remake of Chrono Trigger. Only GTA and Flipnote Studio scored a point higher.
Everyone can play it. You'll be playing it in less than 6 months. Some of us got it early, that's all.
Yes there are.
Pictobits is still one of my favorite games on the service, and Dark Void Zero was better than the actual game it was promoting on the HD systems.

Damn. That's pretty great stuff. Makes me wish I had a DSi, seeing as I loved the original Shantae.
By the way, the soundtrack is available (for donation of your choice, or free if you choose it) over on this page.

Hmm, I think I've only played five of the top 10 rated DS games.
Also, it seems that 4 of the top 10 games released in the very first year of the console.
Edit: Well, what do ya know. NSMB was released later than I thought. I guess it's only 3 games from the very first year, although, to be fair, one of the other top 10 things isn't even a game so much as a content creator thing.
I blew money on a DSi XL, and this game made it worth it. It's an outstanding adventure game worthy of Metroid and LoZ fans. Possibly Tomba, but I only played the demo of that. I fell in love with it during the first boss fight. My first thought was "THIS is a downloadable game?!"
There's one dude, Brickroad, who did a LP of the original game. Somewhere he mentioned that he wouldn't do an LP of this because he didn't own a DSI, so Wayforward sent him one. Also, his complaints made it into the second game as jokes.
For an E rated game, they throw in a lot of sneaky crap.
"My mom dressed up as the pirate lady for dad. But I'm not allowed to talk of such things."
:winky:
It's a crime for anyone with a DSi to not own this. Dish out a credit card and spend the 1200 points.
The girls outfits alone rocket this game up above E.
I've been playing the game for awhile, but I cannot seem to find the Hypno Baron. I've got like 4 keys in his dungeon, but he's nowhere to be found.
Edit: Looking through the OST track list, is there seriously a character/boss named Orly Yarly?
That music plays during light-hearted segments or in silly places. I think the name's just a reference to that sort of silliness.
