Cool. I just ordered the same one off Amazon.com for $1.50 with shipping. So....almost 200% the cost, but still cheaper than a cup of coffee.

I really go to Monoprice for big purchases, like the 35 foot 3.5mm Audio cable I used to use to hook my TV to my computer, but is obsolete since I can just use the 35 foot HDMI-DVI cable I also got from Monoprice with my new GPU. For some reason, I can't imagine going to them for small purchases.

I've been looking for a phone to replace my aging BlackBerry. Right now I'm looking at a Windows phone but am torn between that and an Android based one. Has anyone here messed enough between the two to perhaps shove me in a direction slightly? If it helps, I'd say web browsing/UI responsiveness is a real priority for me. I'd appreciate it if I'd never run into a problem with apps not being available on the platform either, but that's not a huge concern.

What I would do, in all honesty, is go to the store and play with both. Come up with a list of things that you would do, Check email, write a text, browse the web, music, whatever, and then go and do that list on both. Spend like, 20 minutes just messing around, and get a sence of both platform's faults and streingths. It's really dependent on your own personal point of view. My dad's got a Droid 2, he loves it, I much prefer WP7.

I have both WP7 and Android for my day to day use. Android for business, WP7 for personal. WP7 has much better social integration, is much cleaner, more responsive, and easier to use.

Android has it beat on plenty of things, like apps, and the sheer amount of tinkering you can do with the system. WP7 gets most of the same big name apps as the iPhone does, just late to the party. Plants vs Zombies comes out this month, as does Angry Birds. Official Xbox Live support too so if you have a 360 with Live you can sync up, get achievements, etc.

Really really prefer WP7 over Android. My wife has an iPhone 4 and I also prefer WP7 over it.

    EDIT

That Gizmodo article is basically how I feel about WP7 as well. Love it, but MS is somewhat dragging ass. The update fiasco was just that. A fiasco. Once Mango hits this Christmas WP7 will be back on the right track again.

I think part of the issues there for me is that I've never taken Slashdot seriously. And then there is the fact that I know big companies are not anyone's friend, they exsist to provide goods/services to make money.

I love that MS keeps getting the blame when its the carriors who dragged out testing/approveing the updates.

But they allowed the carriers to have a say in the update process. They could have looked at what Android is going through and how Apple handles iOS and easily predict exactly what would happen. The bigger problem is that originally they said they'd be in charge of all updates and the carriers couldn't block them, then they said that they'd work with carriers but it shouldn't be an issue and they could only block like 1 update. Then it took 4+ months to get 2 small very simple updates through.

That being said I want to like my WP7 but if the Sept rumors for iPhone 5 (4.5?) are true I'm probably jumping back. iOS is just to good of an OS and WP7 is missing to much.

Also has anyone notices battery performance issues since the NoDo update? I went from "just listening to podcasts and having around 40% battery life at the end of the work day, 6pm." to "Oh god I have like 2% and it's only 3pm". My habits haven't changed: Wifi is off (I can't connect to work wifi since it's hidden ssid), I hardly every look at apps while working, I don't really talk on the phone (my rollover minutes should show you that) and I'm just listening to podcasts.

Agreed, but MS dons't have the muscle to force the carriers to do what it wants. Apple can say pretty much anything and the carrier'll agree, but with MS, they're the new kids, so he carriers are being much more dickish.

I'm not saying it's fair to blame it all on Microsoft, but it's not just context that's put WP7 in the position it's in; there's an appreciable difference in business philosophy. And consumers and commentators aren't going to look at an $85 billion company as a mistreated underdog.

Haven't experienced it for myself, but seen a few complaints. Supposedly it's because the battery calibration gets messed up after updating: two ways of fixing it here.

The funny part is that nothing gets MS people fired up like all the disdain. I truly think things like Windows 7 or Kinect wouldn't have happened if it hadn't been for the perception of Vista, "I'm a Mac" campaign, layoffs, and general blog-fuelled hate. Best things that ever happened to the post consent-decree company.

Anyone who uses their computer for work is a tool, man. It's major unhip. Same for playing games. What are you, twelve? Computers are for giving your left hand a place to rest while you sip a latte at Starbucks.

More seriously, I suppose, "I'm an IBM-Platform Machine" was a little too clusmy.

I see this criticism a lot, but it's missing the point: people are entertained and would like to be friends with the PC guy, they envy and want to be the Mac guy. Whether it works depends on the particular audience member, but that's the psychology of it.

You don't hire John Hodgman because you want someone who's unlikable.

No you are correct, No new WP7 models have been shown besides a version of the HTC HD7 with a super LCD screen. I assume that the next generation of windows phones will be released round October giving the system a similar updating to that of Apple.

So, I can get an HD7 for about $250, worth it?

I don't intend to use it as my phone (the next time I intend to really upgrade is for the Sensation this summer) but I figure that if the entertainment/games stuff is worthwhile, then $250 is the same price that, say, a 3DS would cost.

So, what do you all think? How is WP7/HD7 as an entertainment/media device? Are the games there to justify buying one just for games?

I believe that Apple had more leverage than you think, they did have a legion of fans that would ensure that the iPhone would be a success after all. But even so none of the carriers initially agreed to the high level of control they wanted. AT&T eventually agreed to do it in exchange for exclusivity, but they were the only ones. It was a move that ended up paying off but one that probably would not have worked without that apple logo.

Microsoft don't have anywhere near that level of support (outside of windows), if they had tried the same thing as Apple WP7 would never have seen the light of day as the carriers would not have put it on their network.

Not that Microsoft have handed the situation with any grace. But the carriers sure didn't help.

Given how long iPhone was literally AT&T only...that doesn't sound like very much leverage.

Unless Apple had zero business sense. Or, a third option, was being deliberately dickish.

Yeah, I'm pretty amazed MS couldn't throw some weight (or money) around to force some Apple-like terms with the carriers to force updates and such. The way mobile OS has developed, you kinda need to be able to force and update through, or else things get a little out of control.

Just got my new HTC HD7, though amazon, only cost me 30 bucks with the contract, and I have to say, I'm very impressed. It's a bit big to me as of now, but I'm used to a old school Nokia candybar-type phone. Some good apps, but nothing to the level of iPhone. Have to pick up a case and whatnot later today, but so far, I'm likeing it.

So last night before bed I noticed that my phone was almost fully charged (I'd forgot and left it connected to USB at work) so I just turned it off and didn't bother plugged it in like I normally do. This morning when I got up I turned it on and got a Critical Battery warning and it showed like it'd be running all night. So I plugged it and finished getting ready for work. After I removed it from the charger to leave the house I got the warning again. I thought it must have just be because I didn't leave it charging long enough so I plugged it in on the car too.

After my drive into work I quickly plugged it back into my computer at my desk and started my day. After about an hour I decided to check it an it still showed 0%, no movement on indicator and gave me the warning again.

Finally I said screw it and pulled the battery, reseated it and now I have the same amount of charge I saw last night....

I'm so over this phone. Anyone want a slightly used mostly brand new (since I had to rma it already) Focus and AT&T?
