True. How about we just post in the thread when and how we're heading back then? That way if there's somebody on the same train/plane we can get some extra gaming in, and if not no harm.

I'm going back on the Metal Gear Line on Monday (3/14, or Pi day for us nerds), and I'd bet that I won't be alone.

    Hey guys!

I'm not sure if this has ever been brought up before, but is there a similar train alliance for Prime? I am aware of the cross country trip and the west coast only train trip. I'm talking about basically reversing some of these train routes and set them on a course for Seattle. If I don't have a car by the time I get out of college (which I HOPE I have one by then...) I would love to do something like this. I was just curious if people are interested in doing that eventually. Sorry if this has been brought up before.

There hasn't been. Traditionally it's the CCST to Prime and the ETA to east. The ETA spawned out of the fact that March is far too early in the year to cross the rocky mountains with a caravan of cars safely. Also the myriad of other unsafe driving weather that can occur across other parts of the country,

Hmm, this sounds very appealing. I was planning on driving up from Baltimore as I am doing BYOC, but I guess it would be possible to BYOC in a large piece of luggage on a train.

I looked it up and it would only be about $150 round trip and gas alone would cost me $100 if I drive roundtrip.

I'm still a little worried about traveling on a train with my computer. Would feel safer to have it in my back seat or trunk.

Amtrak is pretty generous with carry-on size. Depending on the size, you could pack your computer and monitor into a carry on bag, bring another carry-on bag, and still have room for checked bags if you need more than that.

Quoted for truth. In the past I have taken a mid tower PC (in its original box with a case grip around it), a mid size carry on bag full of pc stuffs and my 22" monitor, a separate carry-on with my clothes and such, and backpack full of snacks a jacket and my laptop. Not only are they lax with the size, they dont care how much crap you bring. Plus if you need to access a checked bag, they store them on the lower level of the coach cars right by the door so you can get to them whenever.

Double quoted for truthitruthness. Once brought a large rolling suitcase, a duffelbag, two backpacks, and a laptop bag. Besides being the most ridiculous looking person trying to get on and off the train, since I had all of that stuff strapped to my body, it was fine. There was plenty of room overhead, under my seat, etc. I very rarely check bags on the train.

I know for the Sonic Line there is a core group that literally flies a freak flag.

However, in the event that the Metal Gear line does not have its own sovereign flag, when you get on the train, look for the following:

We'll be the geeky ones playing games in the lounge car. Probably sporting some sort of identifiable attire like a ThinkGeek or PAX shirt.

Alternately, you could go around to everyone and ask them "Enchantment?" If they respond "Enchantment!", it's probably us.
    Don't actually do that.

I'm going to be on Luigi line toward the end, and then I'm getting on metal gear line in chicago.

We're going to be having a decently long layover time in chicago, does anyone have any plans?

Well, I don't know about you but my group will almost certainly be bringing flasks again. For those not on the train from DC to Boston last year, you missed out on a great party. We all occupied the back half of a train car and walked freely up and down the aisle meeting, greeting and gaming.

And this year I again plan on enjoying the spirit of the PAX Train Alliance with plenty of spirits ;-)

I just want to confirm that the Fruit Fucker Flag will make it's triumphant return this year too. Look for us at every stop between DC and Boston :)

It's looking good that my husband and I will be on the Metal Gear line getting on at Buffalo. Anybody familiar with the Bufflao station? Are we likely to be able to park our car there while we're gone (I've seen that there is free parking, but is there ample free parking)? We'd be driving down from Toronto, so we need to park the car.

Couple hundred spaces or so at Depew. If you get really stuck, you can park at the airport and take a cab, but that costs money.

Hey cool someone else boarding in Lynchburg! Too bad you're taking the 20 Crescent & riding the Metroid line. I don't think its listed in the first post, but technically the Sonic Line train (176 Northeast Regional) does stop in Lynchburg as well. Just thought I'd point it out since the Sonic Line has more people on it and well, personally it would be fun to have other PAX goers boarding with me and my friends.

The people on the Metroid Line get on the Sonic Line in DC. Pointing out that there's more people on Sonic is moot because they'll be on that train anyway.

    Good news everyone!

Thanks to Brian Carr (member of the fruit fucker flag crew), we've gotten a 10% discount code for anyone traveling to PAX. This code will be applicable for anyone traveling between March 8th to March 16th to Boston, MA. And if you already bought your ticket, you can call Amtrak and STILL get the discount.

NOTE: You must call 1-800-872-7245 to book your tickets or apply the discount to previously bought tickets. The code is X77F-922.

Does not stack with other discounts (like the 25% on the Lake Shore Limited) but this is pretty awesome. :D

Still, with more than 40 people, it should be able to arrange for pre-boarding of the Pax East "gang", even if you still have to share the rest of the car with other people. *was in a similar "gang" situation in October and we got pre-boarded*

Oh really? How exactly does that work? Is it something that's arranged days before? Day of? Slipping a $50 to the conductor?

Tell me the process, I'm very interested :)

I'm not exactly sure how it works, because I'm not the one that arranged it. My guess would be calling the station ASAP when you have as final a number as possible would be best. WAS might do it slightly differently though, just to warn. When I did this I was traveling out of STL.

Actually, I think I found the amtrak page:

    http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?c=Page&pagename=am/Layout&cid=1241267371744

Group of 20 or more gets special treatment like pre-boarding. Sweet! I'm going to wait a few weeks to let a few of the stragglers officially buy their tickets. Then I'll give 'em a call and find out what can be done to group us PAX'ers together and leave room for people getting on at later stops.

    Thanks man!

Unless the people (Pax East and otherwise) that are transferring from other lines at DC somehow total out to be more than a full car, odds are likely that you'll be in the same car anyway, since the final destination will be the same. If not, you should still be able to move. Just ask first to confirm that you can (in case you get someone that isn't in a mood to let you move, for whatever reason, though most on board staff should have absolutely no problem with it), and remember to move the seat ticket with you to the new seat so the new car attendant will also know where you're detraining. :)

Darn. I've heard stories about how much fun the train is, but it looks my line isn't filling out. I didn't expect Donkey Kong to reach capacity, being so far away and all, but still! *pout*
Well, I may fly in instead and just get more time in to see the sights and participate in other pre-pax stuff.

I'll be checking back...but if anyone is on the fence about Donkey Kong, shoot me a pm and I could easily be persuaded to change my mind :)
