Well, in wrath, I really felt some anger torwards the trolls of guld'drak (spelling? the one with animal spirits) for descrating their gods, even though it was the only way to have the power to stop the scorge for so long.

They did somethings right in WOTLK questwise.

It certainly sets him up as a more menacing antagonist than the lich king was. Imagine if when the lich king showed up while levelling it was a huge "OH FFFFFFFFFFFFFF" event instead of a "sup arthas, oh, going so soon?"

    They specifically mentioned that.

"Illidan was never present in TBC, so we tried to fix that in WotLK.

Unfortunately, we cartoonized him a bit too much.

Pretty much anytime you see Deathwing in the world he will kill you."

It's funny, Pathaleon the Calculator was more of the antagonist of TBC in the quests. He shows up a few times and actually ended up being more menacing than Arthas did in Wrath.

I only vaguely remember him, but yeah. I recall him being a big deal at the time.

Arthas was around but always "I COULD KILL YOU, BUT I WON'T! HA! FUCKER"

If getting killed by Deathwing is supposed to be a rare Feat of Strength, I doubt his flyovers will last until he's a killable boss. More likely, they'll go on for a bit and then Alexstrasza will find a way to bind him somewhere. Then she'll need you and 24 of your closest friends to do stuff so she and the other aspects can get close enough to kill him for good!

The problem with this flyover thing is how do you make a believable raid to kill Deathwing when he is blatantly powerful enough to just kill you in one breath.

Kind of like..why the fuck did Nefarion stand around and get hacked to pieces when he could just fly 40 feet above the ground and rain fire down on you while being untouchable.

    At least with Arthas
he does actually just say 'okay enough screwing around here's my real power' and one hit kill everyone.

Honestly that shit was tiresome and lame. If there is one thing I have hated about WoW since BC it's that the players take a back seat to all the shitty mary sue's running around that Blizzard thinks WoW players give a shit about.
Lich king would have been better if Tyrion bit it and your tank had to use ashbringer to kill the lk ala TK kael. Instead of hurr dur LK was just playin, now yer dead. Oh ho tyrion with the lame save and godmode wheeeee.

That combined with their inexplicable need to sell books by sticking plot material for the game in the books and then not explaining it in game (I didn't know what the fuck was up with OS until ToC) makes WoW lore worthless to me.

Yeah, that's one reason I have trouble sticking with WoW. Not only do PCs not matter in the scheme of things, Blizzard sometimes goes out of its way to point out how insignificant your character is. Like the end of the DK starting zone (which otherwise I love) when Arthas shows up and talks about how only Tyrion matters and then you watch the important characters do stuff. It's like the game takes you to the kid's table and says, "Shh, the grown-ups are talking now."

That's that only way to do it.

Otherwise it's just a bunch of anonymous guys running around killing shit. Storytelling requires characters.

I think he only flies over 1-60 zones, so technically 85s shouldn't be chilling in the Wetlands when there's cultists to fight. Our characters would be fucking psychopaths in any actual canon: running around making fake ogre suits to free a goblin over and over while the war against the Lich King continues.

The LK end makes sense: he has fucking death aura in Halls of Reflection after all, and the entire point of your exploits in Northrend is a test to determine if you are fit to be champions when he's done kicking the Crusade's ass and prepares to shank the rest of Azeroth. It's a ridiculously stupid plan, but at least the fight is consistent.

The game still has to build up the main villain. If you're bitchslapping Arthas as a new Death Knight in EPL, he'd have been even more laughable. Also, as this game ages we face a serious issue with canon, as everything villain goes down to a group of unnamed heroes. So they either retcon it so we don't exist (Onyxia) or they attach some actual names to the event for later reference (Illidan, Kil'jaeden and Arthas all have you being assisted by some lore character).

Chances are we'll be assisted by some combination of Alex, Thrall and other dragons when we fight Deathwing. Blizzard cannot win here: either the heroes of the game don't do enough or they do too much and overshadow us. This is a decent balance by making the villain too badass for the big-name character or player characters to take on alone. We have to work with Warcraft characters to win. That's kind of the original point of the game.

It would be enough if the villain wasn't ultimately sitting around in a cave waiting for an army to show up and kill them. I'd like some more dynamism to the world. During WOTLK I kept thinking how awesome it would be if after Ulduar the LK decided to use his army of untold millions and just kill everyone as he could have done. Basically, a reversal of the phasing in Icecrown that would extend all the way back to Howling Fjord and Borean Tundra, with Horde and Alliance bases being overrun and replaced with small camps, watch posts and pockets of resistance as the Horde/Alliance realise the only chance of success is a surgical strike with a small core of elite soldiers at Icecrown.

Of course they're never going to do that because it's too much work and too much complaining from large portions of the playerbase. But even having something like Deathwing be a world event boss fight would be awesome. Why restrict it to a dungeon? Why does the final boss of the expansion/current story even need to drop awesome loot to be farmed? Just make the penultimate boss the super loot whore and let the real story villain be brought down in something epic.

Honestly, I'd just so after the first couple of phases, Deathwing goes all "I'm through playing, auto-kill!" and have the Dragon aspects swoop in to save you, but instead of fighting directly, they just boost the players to "Kill deathwing" levels. So Ysera gives you super healing buffs, Alexstraza gives a massive health boost, Kalecgoes gives a giant spell damage buff, Thrall gives a bigass physical damage buff and Nozdormu gives.. uh.. a giant haste buff?

Or maybe a mix of buffs and player activated effects (like, once during the fight, you could have Nozdormu freeze deathwing for a short while, ala Occulus, but you'd lose out on the haste buff for a while, while he replenishes his magic.). Ooh, how about all the Dragons DO fight Deathwing, but as the fight goes on he takes them out one by one (With the inevitable achievement of killing him with all 5 aspects up.)

The Bloodsail/Steamweedle Cartel rep grinds are the most bizarre thing in the game, lore wise.

EDIT: I had a big, stupid thing written here, so I'll just summarize it.

Basically, you go into Booty Bay, a town you've helped a bunch with various quests, and just OUT OF BLUE start murdering the people there. At first they just defend themselves, and when you're not murdering them, they're happy to chat with you like nothing happened. Slip of the sword perhaps. Eventually they get less and less enthused with you and you start losing discouts! (shock, horror) but you're still welcome in town. But finally, you manage to piss them off so much (after killing hundreds of goblins) and they refuse to talk to you. If you try, they attack you. By this time word has spread to the other Steamwheedle Cartel factions that you're kind of a jerk, and they start taking their faction discounts away too. Finally end up kiling so many goblins that FINALLY you're kill on sight and they'll summon guards to kill you too. The other factions eventually follow after a few hundred more deaths. Finally you've killed enough Goblins that Bloodsail tells you to go kill the leaders, whom you've probably already killed a dozen times. You do so and you're given a hat and a title. Then things start to get weird.

You go to Dire Maul, and free a goblin held there. He in turns tells everyone in the Steamwheedle faction group that you're a stand up guy. They mostly ignore him because you killed a thousand citizens. Then he somehow gets captured again, and you free him again. Again he says you rock and again the Steamwheedle guys again point to the fact that you are public enemy #1. This goes on a HUNDRED MORE TIMES until finally, sick of listening to him and move you down from "Most wanted" to "wanted." But still you rescue him and still he won't shut up. Tired of him by this point, they move you to "do not speak with", allowing you back into the city. Again you rescue Knot a bunch more and again, sick of listening to him, they start talking to you again, hoping that will shut him up.

You rescue Knot more, and Steamweedle starts giving you discouts and being friendly. More rescues and they give you a plaque. Even more rescues and they've pretty much given you the key to the city and let you sleep with their daughters. Finally after like 250 rescues and subsequent proclamations by Knot of just how fucking awesome you are, the Cartel has just become outright brainwashed and probably thinks you're the son of god or something at this point.

And then Knot gets captured again. And then some other most-wanted SOB Bloodsail Admiral starts chain-rescuing him as well.

I vote Booty Bay worst WoW city to live.

How I would do it is once a day he comes out and everyone can get together and fight him sort of like how they fought the wyrm in dragonblight with the grapple hook things. Pull him down and everyone on the server can start attacking. Level 80s in raids get a tier token mailed to them from the faction leader or something and every week another piece of armor falls off until eventually he has no more armor and he's weakened enough a 10/25 man raid can go in and rape his face. Non level 80s get an experience voucher and some money for helping out.

That's how I would do it, but they don't pay me for ideas.

I'm not sure if this has been brought up yet, but a lot of suffix gear has not been changed to adhere to the new stat design of 4.0.1, so stuff like "of the Sorcerer" has both SP and int on it. The total amount of SP you can get out of that sort of item is actually pretty high for the level considering it's a green (or in some circumstances, a rare). Bandit gear also has both agility and AP on it.

One of the best Hunters I have ever known had a name like that... He was in his late teens but he was damn good at dpsn.
