Free Anti-Virus Programs

I have recently gotten an old laptop that has had the Hard Drive reformatted. It's basically as "good as new" with the idea that it's a few years old.

It's for school, I don't plan on doing any heavy Internet surfing. However, I do need an Anti-Virus program.

At my home, I have the newest copy of Norton. The problem is it only goes on 3 computers, and it's already maxed out the number of computers it can run on, so I can't put it on the laptop.

That means I need a new anti-virus program. Are there any good free ones? I came across this in my search for a free anti-virus program, but it looks like that's only a virus scanner - that it has no virus protection.

Any recommendations? I can't really lay down $100+ for a new virus program.
