Before they shoot their fireballs, you must grip it.
I don't get all the complaining about the beginnning of the game. I bought this on the strength of the demo alone, and I still like to go back and replay the first two levels. The first one to try out new combos and weapons, and the second one because fighting werewolves riding even bigger werewolves never gets old!
wait, does the demo consist of the first 2 chapters?

man, those were some pretty short chapters
The demo is exactly the same as the the very beginning of the game, the first two parts of chapter 1, which has 5 parts. Chapter 2 has 9.
Paladin always seemed to keep me on low health and little to no light magic. Fights like Olrox and Cornell pretty much trained me to do them flawlessly.
This is where the combat really shines. You have to fight flawlessly at times or you're going to get owned. You can't just beast your way through it knowing that there's a health restoration just around the corner. When I'm low on health and have no light magic left, then manage to get my focus up, fill my light meter and then my health back to full I feel fucking badass as hell.
The Olrox fight is actually really fun and super epic when you get his pattern down. I loved just barely dodging his swipes and then bringing on the pain. The Heavy combo is just so damn satisfying to pull off.

The best part about fighting Olrox on any difficulty is throwing a Holy Water and knocking him on his ass after he says something.
And Rust, the demo is just levels 1 and 2 of Chapter 1. The first Chapter has three more levels after what the demo shows you.

Is that when he's vulnerable to knockdown?
Because I noticed that sometimes I could take him out with a charge attack (Sprint + Triangle + Square), but most of the time I couldn't
Holy Water will knock him down no matter when you use it. Everytime. I just like to use it after he mouths off to me.
Attacks that can knock a boss down, will knock a boss down no matter when you use them I believe unless they're in the animation of one of their unblockable strikes. Those override everything I think except maybe Ultimate Light and Shadow.
I'm glad to see the game's getting this much discussion, with most of it being positive after people see just how fucking awesome the game is after Chapter 2. The first impressions this game leaves you with are a little underwhelming, but once you get past the slow burn, it's just incredible. It's good to see people sticking with it and seeing just how great it is. The pacing is really well done..it starts off fairly small and slow, but as you progress it just gets larger and larger in scale and doesn't peak too early. That's one issue I had with God of War 3...the game never was able to match the initial Poseidon level and it was all downhill from there for me. This one just keeps building and building and outdoing itself level after level.
As of right now, this is my #1 game of the year. The only thing I could see challenging it would be Donkey Kong Country returns, but that will be mostly out of nostalgia.
Maybe a little overkill to spoiler stuff from the first two chapters, but better safe than sorry.
What's the best advice to complete the titan trials? I think I heard something about using the crystal to summon, before you climb the titan. Also if that's true, anyone know any quick levels that are good for grabbing shards? I've finished the game, so can use any level.

Yeah just use one before you climb up and then each rune should just take 1 hit to destroy. The level right before the Earth Titan makes you gather an entire crystal to finish it, so do that one and just remember to take the crystal with you before you walk through the last door to complete the level.

Almost completely forgot about that level already. I don't have the best memory. Cheers.
God fuck it, I just discovered that they did a live Castlevania concert in Stockholm last february. I could've gone to that, but I never knew it existed! Fuck, it's sooo good, too.
Man, jumping to the side for dodging attacks by bosses, then using an advanced gilloutine with a 'yank' is a major boss-killer/stunner and it always gets your focus to at least 3/4
Holy shit, I seriously dont know how they are going to top the epciness of the fight with the vamprie dark lord but i cant wait to find out. I loved the cutscenes that interrupted the fighting and man, what a finisher
You can say whatever you want about the quality of the narrative in LoS, but few games have managed to genuinely surprise me to such a large degree in the last 20 minutes of the story.
And I'm not talking about Patrick Stewart being evil.

I think some classic Castlevania themes would have helped to alleviate the "this isn't Castlevania" feeling some people seem to get from LoS.
It came out in March and was expensive as all get out. It was over $200 and it was 18 discs.

So I went hunting and found some english voiceover trailers to complement the japanese one. I also rewatched the japanese one with my "critical cap" on instead of my "wow all these guys I love" cap given that the second cap makes dumb decisions.
I've decided you guys are right and that there are many characters in japanese that feel completely out of place, regardless of the fact that the voice overs are by people I like. I like the main cast and most of the raaargh grrrr bosses but Robert Carlyle as Gabriel is also fantastic. And I wanna hear Patrick Stewart more.
So I'm leaning heavily on the english side now.
Also I found out it's made by a spanish dev and now I 100% agree with that guy who wanted a spanish track. I can't find any information on a spanish localisation or anything. They just...didn't do it.
That's really frustrating!

I figured out that Gabriel became Dracula from the box art of the Collector's Edition, so that didn't surprise me. After fighting the Lycan Dark Lord I started thinking he'd ascend and Dracula would be his cast off shell, but I'm thinking I'm wrong about that.
They start dropping hints that Zobek is evil very, very early (like Chapter 2 early) so that didn't surprise me. I never guessed he was Death though. I just thought he was trying to goad Gabriel into becoming Dracula.
Overall, I really liked the game. The only thing that started to get to me were the narrations between levels. Some of them had valuable plot information, but most of them were just Zobek blabbing about something.
Almost finished with Chapter II. People who say this is a pure GOW clone must die a lot in this game, because I'm rolling and blocking like a maniac, and still getting worked over. Right now I'm wondering if Gabriel
possible hypothetical spoiler
turns out to be Dracula, after he defeats the Lords of Shadow. He would then curse the Belmont name or some such.
Probably me stretching, but it's an interesting thought.

I was actually a bit caught off guard by this. I didn't follow the train of thought from the boss-kill cutscene to the post-credits cutscene.
How did Gabriel become Dracula? I don't remember him getting bitten by a vampire. If he put on the death mask that Zobek was wearing, wouldn't that turn him into... y'know... Death? And not a vampire? I mean, they zoomed in on the death mask laying there so I'm assuming he put it on. But I don't understand how the death mask would make him a vampire.
And furthermore, how the fuck did Zobek get alive again to track down Gabriel/Dracula during the final post-credits cutscene? I mean, Zobek got like....annihilated by Satan himself. I'm pretty sure there's no coming back from that.
Basically, the whole end video just didn't work for me. I didn't understand how any of those characters got to where they were. The transition is not at all logical in my mind.

I think you missed the part where hundreds of years had passed between Gabe defeating Satan and him being shown as Dracula with Zobek alive. I'm sure everything will be explained in the next game/DLC/whatever they are doing.

That's where the inevitable DLC/sequel comes in.
But here's my take on just one of your points:
My interpretation is that the spirits brought him back to life to defeat Satan, but that was the sacrifice for his redemption. It's even evident somewhat from a gameplay perspective since they even made Gabriel more or less invincible during the final fight. Against Satan. Following that, Gabriel now has to go on living without Marie. Forever.
He saved himself but at the price of never seeing her again, even in the afterlife.
I personally thought the epilogue was badass - in a way, it was even a nice homage to Interview with the Vampire. Sure it opens a ton of loose ends (like you, I can't figure out where the whole Zobek thing comes from... suddenly he's alive and well, and even more badass in the future), but all that gives the sequel a lot of breathing room. Perhaps the sequel will span some length of time that will fill in the gaps and ultimately lead up to Dracula getting over himself and getting back on his feet to take on Satan once again.
I, too, really enjoyed this game and I look forward to seeing where they take this new direction. For now, I'm going to start over from the beginning and get some of those goodies they teased me with.
I had a think about the ending and think it makes a lot of sense after the intial shock
First off, you have the ascension idea, where Gabriel sends his spirit to heaven to be with his wife, but then it leaves his shell/dracula behind.
A second idea is that since Gabriel defeated satan himself, and satan is obviously knocked down a peg since Zorbeck is talking about his return, it seems logical for god (i know thats a questionable term but bear with me here) to balance things out. With no ruler of hell there needs to be some presence of evil on earth, or at least I've heard that idea a lot of times in terms of god/satan good/evil. And the fact that satan was willing to go above and beyond to get at god, god would want to keep him in check and imprison him, but still need that element of evil in the world, or something. Made sense to me.
I do like the idea someone mentioned about god granting gabriel immense power to defeat satan, and as an effect, he cannot die anymore.
Overall, I really liked the christanity theme going on. You rarley see that kind of thing in gaming these days, aside from the generic chatoic good paladin in a D&D game, but the fact that the game and Gabriel went into depth about his faith and beliefs really made me like him as a character. The ending of the final battle was totally epic
Chocking satan to death, Gabriel pleading for forgiveness from god
You could really see the conflict in Gabriel through the game, his beliefs compared to what he, and zorbek (inbetween chapters) was becoming. And yeah after all he has been through I can definatley see Gabriel
having a crisis of fatih/renounce god in sheer greif, and using his newfound power to become dracula
So yeah, there are quite a few ways the ending could make sense, to me at least. But damnit if I didn't have a massive fucking grin during that after credits cutscene
Oh, and one more thing regarding the ending
Damnit, I knew it was coming, but why did they have to make Zorbek evil? I would of loved to see him go down in a blaze of glory, figthing satan with you and the 'you killed your wife, dawg' stuff could of been easily replaced with something else. I just really like the idea of a pure, incorruptable good guy sometimes, especially ones that are played by Captian Picard. Really made me lose a lot of points with Zorbek. Not sure what to think after the whole reveal though/ Captian Picard punching dracula out of a window.

I genuinely liked this game, clone or not. It's probably my favorite 3D vania even with my soft spot for the two N64 titles.
