Yeah I don't remember invincibility frames either.
Hit stun is there, but interrupt or priority isn't...which is fine.
I don't know, I watched the toy maker fight and it didn't seem broken.
There's also the question as to whether or not this reviewer bought and used all of the skills in the game, some of the skills for the gauntlets probably do interrupt and have priority, but I'd be willing to bet nothing will take priority over an attack that you cannot normally block.
Not to mention the void sword has a projectile that freezes targets solid, that's definitely an interrupt.
I don't remember much in terms of invincibility frames for the dodge in the first game, either
It was all about careful blocking, and unblockable attacks didn't rely on invincibility frames in any way
This, it's why I'm not worried about those combat complaints for LoS2 because that's exactly how LoS was.
It wasn't about abusing/relying on frames, it was all about proper dodging/countering. Countering was huge, and if you mastered that, it was a completely different combat system; seriously. Very few things, if any, could be stunned, so you had to rely on paying attention to what the enemies were doing and not worrying so much about your specific combos or rotations.
I actually have yet to load up the LoS2 demo (already bought it though), but from what I've read combat sounds just like LoS and MoF, which is exactly what I want. Though I understand that is the opposite for some people.
I still feel, though, that people who really try to rag on the combat on LoS either only played it on Squire or only abused the ultimate magics on higher difficulties. Sure, there were things you could do to cheese combat in LoS, but if you actually played with the tools you were given it was really fun, and plenty of depth and combos. It wasn't attempting to be DMC or Bayonetta.

Well, hopefully I end up enjoying it. It'll be a shame if the game turns out to be a dud. I'll only know once I get a hold of the game in a few weeks. I can't really rely on reviews for this one; I rarely read reviews anymore, and the one site I read regularly (Giant Bomb) probably won't touch the game. Alex from GB was supposed to review the first one. He did a quick look of it and seemed pretty lukewarm about it. The review never surfaced and a year or so later he admitted that he just couldn't be bothered to finish it, so there was no review.
Vinny from GB is the only one on that site who seems to have any interest in the LoS series.

Yeah I mean I haven't played it, and I admit I love LoS1, but that guy seems fairly objectively wrong about the combat.

To be fair to GB, the first 2-3 chapters are really middling and I don't fault people for getting put off by that part, and the titans in particular.
But man does it pick up by the end of chapter 3 and going into 4 and keeps up the awesomeness the rest of the way through.
It's another hilariously clear cut case of reviewers being awful at their job, basically.
We assume
It's posisbel it's not a good game
We just think, in this case, based on complaints about the combat system, that the reviewer probably didn't have a good grasp on the mechanics (which is often a problem with action games that don't play more or less like Devil May Cry)
We think we don't have a new Other M on our hands, but at the same time I feel I need to be ready for that possibility

The story could be padded out shit, yes, but from a combat perspective this guy objectively doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about. That's clear as day just by playing the demo and having played LoS1.

You know whats the funniest part about the insane abbot in Lords of Shadow in retrospect?
He was right.
Zebok and Gabriel did come there to do the devil's bidding.
Regarding the newest review, I remember LOS getting reviews that were all over the place, and as someone who's been a MASSIVE fan since day one (I actually count it as my second favorite in the series, after the original), I seem to remember it not really being appreciated at all until a while after release. I actually am surprised at the amount of love it's been getting recently, though maybe that's because I didn't really read much about it after I beat it since I pretty much disagreed with 99% of the internet regarding the game.
I figure this one will be rather polarizing as well, though reviewers really don't matter to me. Castlevania is one of those series that people seem to have strict ideas about, and most reviewers I'd dare say aren't too familiar with the first 4, which LOS is closest to.
I remember IGNs video review where they complained about LoS1s platforming and then showed a clip of someone obviously intentionally missing a jump to make it look difficult and then complained about confusing and obtuse puzzles citing "clock tower puzzle I'm looking at you"
The puzzle in question being that one handle you have to turn, just like all the ones you turned before it.
I don't recall LoS getting reviews as bad as the GI one. That and the 4/10 from Edge doesn't bode well at all. Not that Edge is the best site or whatever, but there's never more than a few point discrepancy with them. Best case scenario, this ends up in the 70's on gamerankings.
I don't remember the scores LoS got, but I do remember just about every reviewer saying it was a poor God of War game, which pretty much misses the point entirely. So, I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing is going on here.

I'm not too worried about a reviewer that is critical of a games combat and can't even tell if a game has hit stun or not.
I guess we'll see when more reviews start spilling in. Mercury Steam is a B-tier developer and it kind of shows in most of their game design. They might not be trying to emulate popular action games, but there are some core things in those that they really should pay attention to.
I played Lords of Shadow back when it came out on PS3, liked it reasonably well enough. Didn't get the PC version when it was on sale, but could possibly in the future. I did just try the LoS2 demo, ran quite nicely, looked perfectly fine as well. Getting to be Dracula badass seems fun enough. I'm not quite sure how the PC controls would be for it, I just used my PS3 controller which worked great, as can probably be expected.
I'm definitely curious about some of the modern teases. I never did play either of the DLCs for the first one, I bought the first DLC, didn't get around to it though. And the second was supposedly universally bad, so I didn't bother. Guess we'll see... I have enough of a potential disappointment coming up this month with Thief though, so I'll hold off for now.

I wouldn't do PC controls for this game. The only reason I did was because I don't own a controller. Have to play this game with a controller for sure, it's just easier and better to control.

I already pre-ordered this through Steam since I had a bunch of steambux and it was on sale for -10%, and the demo seemed nice enough (though the segment where he pushes the battering ram through the door was done sloppily - the camera zooms in so close you can see stretched/low-res textures and his little jog animation afterward betrayed "getting the fuck out of the way of falling rubble")
Someone's complaint of the repetition of having to break the bolts a total of 9 times has a minor bit of truth to it, but I feel like doing 3 sets of 3 to beat a boss/finish a segment is a video game staple, and I wasn't really bothered by this in any way personally.
The review's problem with the Pan's Hedge Maze segment troubles me, though. The description reads like really poor game design and I see no reason why they would make this up. There was a lot of insta-fail shit in both LoS1 and MoF that I excused because LoS1 was Grilled Cheesus and MoF had the 'I'm just a portable game!" excuse. I guess we'll have to wait and see...

Going to be a shame to lose Gabe as Dracula when they reboot things (I'm assuming LOS2 will pretty much close the book on things pretty tight) after Mercury Steam is gone. I remember not really being surprised by the twist in LOS but it felt like a pretty natural direction to go in with a new take on the character and the Belmonts.
Felt like there was still a lot of gold to be mined there. In a perfect world, I would have liked to have seen a big budget console Castlevania with the MOF version of Simon facing off against him.

I had seen early sections of Simon's chapter on youtube and played the demo with Trevor but finally started my first playthrough of Mirror of Fate (3DS).
Having fun so far. It's what you would expect, it's Lords of Shadow junior but with a lot more Castlevania fanservice this time. This is a great take on Simon as a barbarian badass.
One thing to note is I really like the music I've heard from both MOF and LOS 2 so far, nothing in the first game's soundtrack stuck with me but some of it here and in the demo of 2 has been getting me pumped. It can't compare to classic Castlevania music but still it's an improvement.
apparently there will be a short movie in los2 which details what happened in los1 and MoF for those who haven't played either.
Oh, good thing I read this after I bought the game this morning ;-)
Actually, I'm having a lot of fun with it. I like how they tied elements of the previous games into it.
For instance, the spirit of Belnades was a welcome surprise. My favorite raster egg so far was Richter's SotN outfit in the alcove by the Combat Cross.

Actually I think thats supposed to be Trevor's outfit from this game.
Konami have been demoing the shit out of this game, letting journalists play for a good few hours in press events, with some sites posting previews 4-5 hours deep into the game. If LoS2 is such an unplayable mess with broken combat, you'd think some of them would have picked up on that.
And yes, some previews tend to be over-enthusiastic, but still, a 4/10 game is easy to spot after playing it for 4 hours.
I am a bit worried about the stealth sections, but then again I'm also excited to see the series attempt something new, and in the context of the CV games, utterly bizarre.

Yeah, the Los 1 dodge didn't have iframes either.

Neat. That was my favorite section of LOS.

I noticed that in the demo. You need to watch their attack animations to dodge and block appropriately, even when you are wailing on them.
Well...That's true even in LoS.
Just that some enemies were stunnable and some weren't. Probably still the same now that I think about it.
Cool for people buying it on the PS3? The deal I think a lot of us were hoping for on the PC.
