PS3 Price Increase In Canada

The PS3 has reportedly gone up in price in Canada at certain major retailers.

Originally $659.99 CDN, Futureshop, Best Buy and The Source by Circuit City, have raised the price of the system to $699 CDN, an increase of 40 dollars.

I checked Futureshop's site, and Yup the price has gone up.

Best Buy too.

And The Source By Circuit City

Insane.

Can we lock this? We've beaten this to death in the other PS3 price thread. We know it's just FS/BB, because of their ties to the Canadian currency. EB, WalMart, Zellers, and Sony Store are all sticking to $659.

Also, FS and BB have a low price guarantee in which they MUST match a competitor's price and BEAT it by 10% of the difference.

Which is hella amusing, as now they have to sell it lower than they would have if they DIDNT raise the price

Most people don't think about using that policy though, so they're probably making more money in the end.

Dude... price matching is a pretty standard policy

If you're willing to pay the advertised price when you know a competitor is selling for less, you deserved to get reamed.

The "beat by 10% of the difference" bit might be exclusive to BB/FS sure, but its hardly much anyways ($4 in this case)

Yeah, or else the government will blow them up.

Look, they can do whatever the fuck they want. If they want to say that it doesn't apply to the PS3, then guess what, thats what they will do.

    Heya all,

My heart goes out to those Canadians that'll be burned by this price hike. After all, we here in Europe (and our brethren in Australasia) have the following to look forward to (in order of cost):

    Japanese price: ¥59,980 (US$494)
    American price: US $599
    Europe price: €599 (US $779)
    Australian price: A $1,000 (US $785)
New Zealand price: NZ $1,200 (US $839)
United Kingdom price: £425 (US $840)

    The full article

And hey, we in PAL encoded areas (United Kingdom, Europe, New Zealand and Australia) don't even get the cheaper variant that the rest of the world gets, it's the most expensive or nothing. And of course, just to and shiny ol' insult to injury, we're still looking at March 23rd as a release date (assuming Sony don't push it back for some reason or another).

We seem to have an anti-PS3 non-story every day now.

OMGWTF: SONY REFUSES TO DROP CONSOLE PRICE SOON
REALITY: Console manufacturers never drop the price this soon, unless the console is selling like shit. The PS3 is selling a reasonably healthy number of units.

OMGWTF: SONY JACKS UP THE CANADIAN PS3 PRICES!
REALITY: Uh, retailers are raising the price to pad the margins after the Canadian dollar took a crap on the economy. MSRP remains unchanged.

    What next?

The Sony "price-raise" is actually only for Best Buy and Future shop which are adjusting for Canada's deflated currency. Places such as EBgames are confirmed to have the old pricing and Sony sources have said they have done nothing to change the recommended pricing on the PS3.

I know. How about everytime there is news about a console, we discuss it since discussing games, consoles and gaming news in general of pretty much the point of this board? Or is that going to upset you too much?

You're tired of threads about negative PS3 news. That's great, even dandy in fact. I can't say I'm not at least a little tired of them myself but as long as new news keeps coming on that in some way reguards the PS3 and isn't all sunshine and raibows keeps popping up people are probab;y going to keep talking about said news.

But if it really bothers you please do everyone a favor- Take it up with a mod and, here's the important one, stop shitting on threads you don't like. I mean no one has even tried to blame Sony for this and you appear to be on some sort of crusade to defend them against imaginary attacks.

Heh, I wonder, if they threatened to raise the price soon would that prompt people to suddenly start buying up PS3s right now? Is that their strategy?

Perhaps they are making an example out of Europe? and Canada?

It's a Canadian example for a couple of retailers. Sony had nothing to do with it.

And Europe always gets fucked on video game prices from what I can tell.

I may be a 360 fan and prefer the 360 overall however I look jealously at PS3 Exclusives like Resistance Fall of Man. Sadly I am not made of money and the 659 price point is a fucking joke. And now the price is going up by forty dollars at some stores? It's insane. I don't give a shit about the currency conversions, those stores are fucking retarded.

I had not read the other 9 page PS3 thread about PS3 prices however this is a uniquely Canadian news topic and I think deserves it's own thread, if only to let other Canadians know which stores to avoid when shopping for a PS3.

Deflated currency? I checked tonight at work, its still at 85cents... which i thought was the reason it was 50 dollars more already here than in the US.

Fuck it was actually UP once cent on friday. This "Deflated currency" thing is a crock of shit.

If they want to charge 20% instead of the actual per cent, thats their choice. But lets not let them fucking lie about it.

Par for the course i guess... Price difference on the PS2 was 66% more when our currency was only hovering around 40% less.

*edit* Even if BB and FS will price match, im still not going to buy it there out of fucking principle. This is a real dick move, because im sure there will be a lot of people who'll get fucked by this, not knowing the real price. Hell, my friend, who wanted to buy one, though the MRSP was 800 dollars, and my dad thought it was 1000. On a seperate note, i think the best thing sony could be doing right now is running a commercial, once an hour on every channel, advertising the 500 dollar system. Seems like a lot of people are in the dark about the price, and the fact there are 2 levels of system.

Alot of retailers take their pricing lead from the big box electronic stores which when it comes to big name electronics. The Source By Circuit City has also raised their prices possibly in response to Futureshop and Bestbuy's move. There is the very real possibility that other big stores like Wal Mart or Zellers will simply shrug and follow suit.

As Zeon mentioned the currency reason being given out is complete bullshit.

Hey, you Canadians are lucky. The Canadian Dollar is at 85 US cents, and the PS3 costs CAD$660 or CAD$700 there.

The Aussie Dollar is at 77 US cents, and the PS3 will cost AU$1000 here.

Next time Terrorbyte, read the post you're about to troll. Bamelin said it was the retailers increasing the price, but your anti-MS eyes saw his green and white sig and you went batshit insane again.

So what is it now? Is Bamelin one of the Xbox 360 street team? Was this price rise instigated by Microsoft spies and agents? Should we all start buying massive amounts of stock in Apple and Sony as their iPods and PS3s take off as they are clearly and utterly superior products? And most importantly, should we be more like you and completely shit up threads for no fucking reason other than that we wish to appear to be retarded assclowns?
