Personally, I think of the Backburner as a sort of "training wheels" weapon for an appropriate Pyro attitude. Your airblast is a powerful tool, but it still doesn't make the Pyro and assault class; since most everything he has operates at close range or by surprise, he needs to be ambushing. Equipping the Backburner makes you think "Gee, I get bonuses for attacking people from behind. I need to take steps to make sure that happens!" Later, when you switch back to the Degreaser (the standard Flamethrower exists only for people who don't have the Degreaser), you can apply what you learned during the Backburner play while still getting the benefits of the airblast.
Especially since afterburn is almost useless since smart teammates always put it out, and most classes have some way to do that.
Then again, lately I've just been igniting people for the extra damage and then shooting them in the face with the shotty. I do much better when playing pyro if I treat the shotgun as my primary.
The Pyro's Polycount set is pretty nice even though I do miss the axtinguisher. That little bit of extra speed is pretty noticeable, which I find strange because I don't really "feel" the effect of the increase movement rate when I play medic. I suspect it is because the medic's speed doesn't really help you get away from someone but the pyro's speed boost makes it obvious because the only way the person you're chasing will escape is if you die :P
Barrakketh on
Rollers are red, chargers are blue....omae wa mou shindeiru
What would people's opinions on the Degreaser be if it did not ignite enemies at all? You pretty much lose the Axtinguisher (which, honestly, needs to be less significant as a Pyro weapon overall), but the ability to snap to the main weapon and reflect projectiles at a moment's notice is already a pretty powerful advantage-- as is immediate weapon switching in general.
The axetinguisher is the entire reason to have the degreaser in the firstplace, having it so it couldn't ignite someone would be absurd. Light, puff, axe. Super quick. That is like the whole point of the degreaser for me.
I hate that thriller taunt, every time I'm in a good position to get a hadouken kill it does the stupid thriller taunt.
I was trying to do this at a teleporter exit the other day, figuring it would be awesome if, instead of getting the thriller taunt and getting owned when someone teleports through, I hadoukened them and they died a fiery death.
Then a friendly spy comes along and saps the teleporter. An engineer on the other side fixed it, thankfully.
Then a friendly pyro comes along and roasts the teleporter.
Thanks for that; I don't know why I didn't think of setting it on fire.

Life must be so hard for you, Ebo
It is, Buttcleft, it is.
But I am comforted by the notion of how much more difficult it would be to be the other people mentioned in my story. A real horror show.

left click is a constant airblast
right click is a jet of flame
How much RAM does the PS3 have?
This is a good point. Pyros like it from behind.
Yep.

can you blame us?
"just killed this guy, gonna switch to my disguise kit. and then taunt."
if we use YER we can't even do it
When I play spy I usually stand at the gate in setup and chain smoke so any pyros around can get it.
And even if you do it, there's a chance of doing the spycrab taunt instead.

and right now, also the thriller taunt
