My confidence in them being able to turn around FF14 is hovering at a level that mathmeticians would argue is technically zero. But goddamn, this plan is already worth it due to the artwork pdf they put out. http://wdl.square-enix.com/ffxiv/download/en/FFXIV_2.0_Specs_EN.pdf
I.. may pay for this. I want this game to be good, if I have to throw money at this to accomplish that.. I do what I must. The ideas they have seem spectacular and the current team has shown a strong ability to do what they set out to do and seem almost as interested as making a good game as the players. So I have some (possibly misguided?) hopes here.

I already bought a collectors edition on promises and concept art. I see no reason to spend 120 dollars over the course of a year on the exact samething.
If they reduce the subscription fee, then yeah I could.
hmm, so im starting to get frustrated with the game. I guess that was only a matter of time. Not enough to quit but enough to not want to play for long periods. I went from camp bearded rock (1-10) to camp skull valley (10-20 im assuming) and the difficult jump was not anticipated. Only coupled by the fact that i am unable to find better gear. I did buy what i could equip from the mizzenmast and things got easier, but i hate having the levequest be all "yeah kill 4 of these...
psyche it's 8 only you have to chase 4 of them through the entire planet and get aggro'd by a bunch of crazy shit maybe that guy will save you, what a nice guy he healed you haha you're still dead
"
grumble grumble grumble. I guess I didn't actually die, I just ran until the level 17 thing that aggro'd me fucked off.
I also decided to buy the best gear available at the miz, cause it was something I could wear that had better benefit than starter items. Even though i take a penalty on most of my shit till level 18 i figure it's better than buying the level 8 stuff.
Excellent little document they've put out today, although my inherent impatience is stretched beyond its limits - major changes at the end of 2012?
Regardless, I've re-installed and am having a look around. Can't seem to find any Local Leves in between rank 10 and rank 20? I'm around 15-16 in Armourer and Smith, but I'm failing R20's. Also, I've completely forgotten the intricacies of the synthesis system.
Any advice?
Edit: Oh and my macros have mostly vanished - anyone point me towards an up to date guide to setting those up? I had basic shit like changing my gear for different classes. Can't remember a thing about that, either.
So they're starting to charge again, but all the great stuff they're promising is rolling out late 2012/early 2013? I bought this game at launch and was obviously insanely disappointed. If 2013 gets here and they can actually deliver a good game, maybe i'll resub, but only if they don't think I'm buying the game again.

You want to pick up rank 10 leves, and then do a 3 star version of it (or whatever star gives the mobs +6 to level). Should solve your problem.
The changes look amazing. The entire "implementation of a new graphics engine" thing baffles me. I'm excited.
I am totally not excited for them charging before they even implement the much lauded job system. I think it's safe to assume they're under a lot of pressure to get the game back into a state of financial profitability, but it's going to hurt a lot of their good will. If it was half-price or something I would be fine with it. If I do end up subbing it will likely be because their subscription fee is already fairly low.
Wow this game is starting to look good. Is there a free trial?
No. If you purchase a box-copy it should be free until late November/early December. People who purchased the collector's edition received a "buddy pass" to give friends a one month trial, but it's a year out and those are all far more likely used than not.
Would giving a buddy a free one month trial from the CE box be like giving your friend a free copy of the game since they don't charge yet?
Sort of. But they'd still need to buy a copy for themselves once the game goes pay to play I believe. Which, according to all that new info, is in roughly 2 months. I do hope they reconsider, but oh well.

Cool, I have no idea how this works but I'll take a look when I get back online later tonight.
My earlier session basically consisted of me riding a chocobo. I need to red up on how to obtain 'em, and the whole Grand Companies thing.
The star versions of leves seem to only be battlecraft leves, so local craft ones wont have that option. From my understanding if you need local leves to level up armorer/smith just grind out any you can find, you get xp no matter what.
I haven't played FFXIV since the beta and have little intention of trying it again any time soon, but I do follow this thread and the patch updates with a kind of morbid fascination, not unlike how one watches the cleanup of a trainwreck.
It's just so incredibly fascinating to see a game so spectacularly troubled, from such a huge developer, that is literally being completely rebuilt while it's LIVE . New graphics engine, new UI, remaking every single world area in the game, new server architecture, and the obviously ongoing changes to the combat. There doesn't seem to be any aspect of the game that isn't being thrown out in some capacity, or completely rebuilt in many cases. You know things are bad when Square uses terms like "fundamentally flawed" to describe their own server architecture in their own press release.
Anyway, I will continue to watch with curiosity. The game in its current state still kind of looks like a steaming pile, but shine on you crazy diamonds who are sticking with it. Maybe after the PS3 launch it will be worth an honest re-examination if they can actually implement all of the stuff they've set out to.
I agree it's pretty interesting to watch. When a game crashes and burns like this it's usually considered best to just cut your losses and move on to a new project. It's probably a testament to the company's faith in the series, and/or the players' faith in the series, that so much effort is being put into resurrecting this. It's probably more interesting just to watch, but it does get progressively more fun to play. I find myself annoyingly hopeful and likely to stay on during the 2nd paid beta.
As for the crafting leves, yeah, they still are a bit random and you tend to not get things you probably want. With the crafting recipes having finally been simplified, though, it might be better for you to just get hold of some real materials and start grinding them out. Crafting is still more like XI where there's a greater time investment than the combat classes.

Isn't cutting their losses and moving on to a new project pretty much what they're doing at this point, just with continuity between the two?

Well, that will just depend on how different 2.0 actually is.
I'm curious about the engine; if they're totally scrapping the current XIV engine or just building on it to make it better. Either way they need to optimize the shit out of it. XIV is a pretty game, sure, but not pretty enough for how unbelievably poorly it ran.

They stated in this release they're going to put in a new graphics engine, but I suppose there is some variability in what that really means. They are aware of the optimization problems though, and one of the bullet points about the graphics engine focused on scalibility so it would run on a wider variety of PCs. The current team seems very aware of the big issues everyone has. Other notable things: UI Customization via Add-ons(!); drag and drop inventory junk. This release is pretty much a big pile of "Yes, we get it, the original game is terrible and here's all of our plans to fix it!" It's just a really strange message juxtaposed next to the "And we're charging in 2 months well before any of this takes place." Executive meddling much? I hope there's a big enough response from the player base to push that back, I really do.
On another note, I absolutely loved the Yoshi-P's "Letter from the Producer." He talks a bit about his early experiences with what I can only assume is Everquest, and it just makes me smile. It's just more evidence that he's a fan of the genre and "gets it." I like this dude, and that makes it really hard to wish ill of this game. In general I'm a big fan of all the communication they've been having with the community. It's really fascinating to see how S-E and the team itself have reacted to the botched launch.

I am just wondering what kind of oversight was given to this project in the first place, so that we got what we got and ended up where we are now.
...and when you are done with that; take a folding
chair to Creation and then suplex the Void.
Square learned a /lot/ from FFXI. This you can see. Its just odd that the team that worked on FFXIV for the largest part of its original development really had very little to do with the core team members who worked/work on FFXI. Once it bombed they replaced them with FFXI team members. Which should have been what they did from the get go. The entire thing was just a confusing mess and something that was obviously not thought out at all. It's pretty amazing that such an investment in money would be handled so poorly.
Still, I will sub After re-reading the PDFs and the letter from the editor and such, I've decided these people get my support. At this point I can't even say I'm supporting the game so much as cheering on the people who are trying so hard to make it into a good game. I do enjoy it and it's getting better all the time... but hot damn the people working on this game.
I do think it's interesting that they're reinstating (or instating, as it were) the monthly charges that would suggest the game is "finished," yet are basically completely reinventing it over the course of a year+ of charging fees. Mixed messages?
Granted, I haven't played the game since beta/buddy pass time, and even then barely because my PC just couldn't handle it, so take this with a grain of salt...
I've been following the developers letters and patches and such over the last year and, maybe someone who plays could say better, but honestly it feels like the content that is there, now, is pretty much fine for an actual MMO launch. So in that regard paying now seems more palitable; however it remains to be seen how many people playing will stick around with a charge. Anyway, the whole changing over the next year isn't a huge deal honestly; it is an MMO and that sort of thing is just par for the course. If an MMO doesn't do this periodically, it is bound to just fall off the earth and disappear. Granted, the apparent amount of change XIV will get is abnormal, but as long as they don't try some bullshit like making people pay for the game again with 2.0, it seems pretty ok. Yeah yeah, paying to beta test their game and all that jazz, but as someone who's been playing MMO's for a decade or more now, ever changing, never quite complete content is just the name of the game. Love it or hate it, it is what it is.
It feels funny to be defending XIV now after having such a bad time with even trying to play at launch and just overall feeling like it was simply a bad game, even to its core; but everything Chocobolicious said pretty much sums up how I feel.
I want to play a console mmo again, there's nothing better for me than sitting on my couch and grinding away. The game doesn't even have to be amazing, just enough to satisfy that particular itch for me, I mean I even played EQOA for like 2+years. That said this game really stirs my interest more so than all the other mmo's on the horizon since it will be on PS3.
That said I've been wondering if I should pick this up now so come the Ps3 launch I can hit the ground running or do I want to start brand new then. On the one hand I hate coming into a MMO late and playing catchup, whole on the other hand, come ps3 launch I'm sure there will be a lot of new people to group with
Now (last patch) you heal for larger amounts the longer you stay stationary. Starts slow, but the ticks of health get large quickly if you just hang out.
I have to chuckle a little that even the touted graphical engine is being scrapped or heavily modified? Wasn't the vaunted Crystal Engine what they spent most of their time on even? That was the largest reason the game was such a launch failure IMHO. They spent most of the 5 years of development on the engine, and only like 1.5 years on the game, including outsourcing lots of it to Chinese developers (we see how well that went lol...)
I'm glad to hear they also plan to redo the maps -- it gives me hope that the game actually MIGHT be a worthwhile sub eventually. Because one of my big complaints to friends still was that even if they fix up combat, crafting, etc. that the world maps were so terrible. (Especially Gridania) FF games are known for their world immersion, and the way the only civilization basically existed in the capital cities and the rest was barren wilderness always seemed odd to me. There needs to be small villages in various areas ala an FF game where you would go visit a town, not just some cookie-cutter Camps.

The graphical engine isn't even bad. I don't know why they're doing that. It's leagues ahead of it's competition so long as you can manage to crank the graphics up.
They just need environmental effects to occur more often. Seeing a thunderstorm or a sand-storm blow up in Ul'dah is pretty awesome looking, and lends alot of the setting. I think i've seen maybe two of each in a month's worth of playing.
It's not that the graphical engine produces ugly pictures, it's that it chugs like a pile when other games that offer similar visuals run fine on my (and many others', from what I hear) system.
Enough that it is no longer "overhaul" territory but "redo completely". It's one of the worst I've seen in awhile for big releases, really.

Gally is a silly goose. I don't understand why you went to an internet cafe to patch. You have a connection wherever you're staying, yes?

Plan to start charging December this year, but not even launch version 2.0 until January 2013.
THAT'LL WORK!
(there are some betas/testing stages in there, though)
BTW: Gally, you can drive all over creation for all I care, your tenacity is a sight to behold!
Except it says "Free trial period ends" at the very bottom after the Version 2.0 client goes on sale. It's not entirely clear.
Also, note that the characters have titles and that the chocobo has a name/title and health bar on the party interface!
Might those grids in the lower right be some type of raid interface?
I am a UI whore, what can I say?
