So I was able to get in game for a bit tonight, Selis Semidey. I wasn't able to play as long as I wanted because I kept having an issue where my ps3 controller would desync and I'd have to unplug and plug it back in to fix it like every 2 min, so I spent the rest of the night looking for a fix to that, which I never found:(
I'm hoping to get a nice long session in this weekend and get myself acclimated

Gave the game another brief shot figuring I'd see whether it was worth subbing for me. They've definitely improved things a lot, but it still just doesn't do it for me. Combat is slow and (to me) uninteresting. Leves are even more poorly masked directed guiding than most games' quests, and the whole "oh a runner, now he's 5 minutes away oh surprise more bad guys" gets old. It probably gets a lot better in groups, but since that's pretty much universally true of all MMOs that's not really in the pro column.
Maybe it'll be vastly improved in 2.0, but the whole pacing of the game just isn't for me at present. Which is sad, I don't think I've ever tried this hard to like a game and it's SO PRETTY.
Found an android app that's basically a lite version of xivpads in your pocket called ffxiv buddy. Let's you track stats and news items. It's supposed to be updated periodically with more features but as of now its pretty swell. Also see you all tomorrow (as long as my frikking flight isn't double canceled yet again).

I am not completely sure, but it seems like they improved some dialog/journal entries on the story quests. I was able to follow it way better this time.
So I've gotten to lvl 12 on my THM. I decided I want to lvl CNJ for some utility but I seem to be running into some annoying bug where the game will not let me buy the lvl 1 CNJ staff. I've tried the 2 merchants in Ul'dah that sell it as well as the market ward but the second I try to open the item window that would have the sttaff in it, the game crashes. Every other merchant/market ward search I've tried does not crash the game except the 2 merchants who sell the staff and the 2hnd CNJ weapon search
So apparently the cause of it was in the ffxivconfig. Apparently in fonts if I try to use windows fonts/english language will cause my game to crash.
10CNJ now so I've become much more efficient solo on the THM with stoneskin and profundity. I've been AEing down mobs 3-4 levels below me, 16THM now. I still need to learn some more basics before I look to group tho, and I havent seen any shouts for a group below 35 tho so I think I have some time. I've been burning through Anima and favor really fast tho so I'm wondering if I'm gonna regret that in a few weeks
Now I need to learn how to do a /sea all so I can get an invite to the guild, it's annoying still wearing the lvl 1 equipment
What strategy are you guys using for the Ifrit fight? I'm trying to study up for Velve, but don't want to learn one way and see it go another. Will 36 Glad be a requirement?
If I find anyone with that blue shield with two white chevrons, will that always be the PA linkshell? Is that who and what I need to find to get into the group?

No, there is a limited amount of designs and colors available to use for a linkshell, so there will be duplication.

So ive gotten to 20 on the THM in about 4 days, all solo, no idea if I'm making good time or not. I've done the story quest up to the point where I have to pick a companion, not sure which I should go with, Gld would be nice for the casters, but there's more melee classes and I think CNJ would get more use, what class do most people go with for companions?
I want to run around soon and get all the warp points so I can join groups and not worry about not being able to warp to the camp, plus I have to figure out if my role is heal, nuke, or debuff
My main 2 complaints right now are gear and mob placement. I cant find any lvl10+ gear that isnt like 30k gil+ and i only have like 70k. And to add on to that fact, Limsa lominsa is enjoying giving me quests to run around the city for 15 min to reward me with 300xp when i need 15000xp to lvl, they're just not worth doing. I think those quests would be a great way to give characters some lvl10ish gear. Im still in all lvl 1 gear at 20.
And mob placement is weird, I pretty much just run in between areas where's there's either 300 mobs all crammed together, or not a single mob in sight. It works for me since I've been AEing but they really need to spread the mobs around. It sucks that I'm still killing lvl14 mobs at 20 because I can't find an area with big enough population of mobs closer to my lvl
So I rerolled this weekend and... wow? Talk about major changes. A friendly tutorial now?? (are we sure this is Squeenix?) And what's with the new music in Gridania? I thought the old music was fine.

I'm not sure if they've said anything about changing the pay model for when they do bring back the monthly fee. I agree, the pay per character system is pretty horrible, and I'd say the same about the paying extra for more retainers.
If they switched it to flat rate $10 to 15 they'd be in the clear on this, but if they continue to charge per character that's more people grumbling on forums and more bad press for a game that desperately needs every move from here on to be the right move.
In that respect I think they've been too quiet, even now. It's been over a week since they announced their plans and they haven't put out any news. They need to be keeping the ongoing development as visible as possible. Once or twice a week they need to be going "hey check out this thing we're doing that will be so great" or people are going to forget real quick (or at least quicker than otherwise) what's going on with this. There's a lot of hype surrounding a lot of big name MMOs right now and Square's gotta catch up hard if they want to have a reasonable chunk of the market outside of Japan.
Extra character is purely you wanting a different race or something. It isn't like you ever need more than one character. Which is why they make you pay for it, I'd assume. There is something decent about being able to do everything on a single character.

Yeah, the best part of both XI and XIV is that I am always advancing and bettering my character. If I was tired of Red Maging/Weaving/Cooking/etc. it up, I could always work through some older story missions or FoV or Companion stuff as a lower level job, all the while making some gil off lower level stuff.
The shift from alts was really a great selling point for me.

Duoing is extremely effective starting out and for quite some time. Eventually you'll want to add some more people to your party as you get higher. In my experience this happens less via shouts in town and more by accident, finding someone else leveling in the same area as you who are willing to join up for a bit to make the murder happen faster.
Leves are effectively 8 a day (they used to be 8 battle, 8 crafting per 36 hours), but you can stack up a queue to 99 if you don't do them for a long time. At release they were pretty important (read: The only damn thing to do), but now they are less so. What they mainly are is a good source of gil. I wouldn't recommend wasting any time doing the level 1 leves. Just grind on normal mobs until you hit 18 or so and go do level 20 leves (likely camp horizon) for profit.
Grinding on regular mobs is actually not bad, now, and the whole exp chain/linking thing makes it somewhat enjoyable if you like seeing numbers on your screen a lot. The first few tiers of gear are much cheaper from vendors now, too, so once you start feeling your starter gear bringing you down you'll likely have the gil ready for something new anyway.
Skillchains are gone for now, likely to return once they give up and copy/paste XI's system.
At low level (15-20?) there's a newbie dungeon, too, so you may want to look into getting some people together for that. Not sure if people really run it or not, though.
If you do hit 20 and are on Wutai I'd totally run a level 20 newbie dungeon. I need to seriously get back into this but my usual XP partner is a flake and doesn't play (This or Rift, flakey flake.) so I've been kind of stalled on the whole situation.
It really depends how much you play, 1-10 you can do in less than 2 hours really so the lvl 1 leves aren't worth to waste an allowance on but at 10 the leves start to be worthwhile. If you're not using your 8 leves a day then there's no reason no to do the lvl 10 battle leves with some crafting ones. If you're on enough that you do the eight leves plus have 5 hours to spare then you'd have to decide which leves youd rather do
If you've got the mats you can make it, just put them in the box with the right combination. mooglebox.com seems to be the place to go for crafting info at the moment.
Most of the new recipes are simplified now so some combinations make more than one thing.
I have to say I'm really impressed with the changes so far. I'm still not sure I can "get into it" though-- especially if they're going to be charging soon, I just have so little free time these days.
Its different, for certain. I hope it doesn't try too hard to fit the WoW mold though, or else it'll lose a lot of what I like about it. That is, to say, being different.
Man after playing Rift for a few weeks, it feels.. better to be back into FFXIV. I dunno, the environment, the actually interesting quest text and such. Even the combat just feels more weighty. I miss my crazy SE MMOs when I'm not playing them.
