Precisely. What they're doing here is unprecedented, and has never been attempted before. For all the bitching and moaning the FF games have been getting, this is the first honest-to-god indication that SE has both listened to complaints and doing everything possible to fix them. It's downright admirable, even though they brought it on themselves and they deserve all the grief and losses they've incurred from their lack of research, development, or even common sense.

Part of me also wants to believe that this is the kick in the ass they needed in order to shape up the core series from here on out. The FFXIII situation is pretty much a counterpoint, as they are probably aware of the major complaints that still exist with FFXIII-2 (that terrible, terrible story), but it's also been reduced to a "budget" series that they can pump out within a year and a half while applying the most minimal of improvements (couldn't they at least change directors?).

But once the "Lightning Trilogy" is mercifully done with, there's the wonderful prospect that we will enter a golden age of prosperity, consisting of FFXIV 2.0, Versus XIII, and (based on certain insider speculation) an FFXV that completely changes what we know about the series as a whole.

I'd be totally okay with FFXIV paying homage to the classic games as a bit of a final tribute; it's fanservice, but that's exactly what I've been wanting in an FF-themed MMO. Golden Saucer? Magitek Armor? Go for it, it's not like they've got anything to lose at this point. How about an Opera House that features live re-enactments of famous FF scenes/music that players could just sit back and watch, and perhaps battle the occasional show-crashing Octopus?

And it also looks like Judges are in the game. How great would it be if Yoshi actually used the Judges properly, as they have remained one of the biggest wasted concepts in series history?

Considering how much it costs to build an MMO in the first place, I'm not sure too many others would have financially survived such a failure to be in a position to completely rebuild it. That's a big decision to make and I'm sure it wasn't made lightly. Hat's off to them for what they've got to show so far, and it's very encouraging to see how much effort they have and are putting into making sure this is a success. It's a good sign for post launch content when they clearly care so much about making it right.

I think it has to do with legacy status more than anything else. They probably dreaded the idea of having a major black mark in their numbered series that would be mentioned for years to come.

Even though this now technically makes FFXIII the black mark. Perhaps not as offensive as FFXIV, but it's a game that I surmise will get even further hate the more people recall/discover the older games followed by (I truly hope) the significantly better sequels.

That, and I think being (previously) PC-only makes it slightly easier to fix on the fly. Console releases can get patched, but it would've been far more effort to do so for the PS3 simultaneously. Addressing XIII via DLC was probably the best we were going to get unless discs were literally killing people (which I would not have put past them, to be fair).

But yeah, this was about not letting a main series entry die. It's kind of ironic, or one of those things I frequently mistake for irony; I objected along with many to the idea of numbering the online games, yet without that numbering they may have just left it to wither and die. One way or another they needed something like this, a reason to stop and actually look at what they were doing. It's too early to say this means better things for them going forward, but it's an encouraging sign all the same.

I'd like to add this whole "destroy the world so now the real game begins" thing works on several levels, not least of which is a prologue to a more conventional RPG. What plot I've seen looks like they're setting up a party of NPC heroes to try and fail to stop this. I'd die laughing if 2.0 started with your character waking up from a bad dream with their parents yelling at them for being late for something, and later learning that THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO OUR WORLD WAS DESTROYED BLAH BLAH ETC.

It's a better premise than the original FFXIV, to be sure.

The NPCs treated you like shit in that game. I get the whole "make a name for yourself" idea, but it isn't encouraging when your first task is to get rejected by every guild you visit only to get let in the one meager company willing to take you in.

Finishing that quest then led to a cutscene where you character acts like a complete tool, like anime level stupid.

Hah, too right, I'd forgotten that whole "oh hey dead people everywhere lemme just wave to those totally-not-suspicious dudes down there" thing.

I'm just worried they're going to trash Limsa before I get to play with those guns. They practically shove one in your hands for all of two seconds, then take it away before you even get to fire it. That was mean. :(

Or better yet, make those guns available for purchase right from the start, without any assholes publicly calling you out for being a newbie and taking them away.

Seriously, it was offensive how the story treated your character.

The beginner quests in Limsa. Their assholery might be exclusive to that region, but it's still not a positive way to introduce new players to the world.

I can't think of a bigger kick in the balls than having a quest where you're asked to practice with firearms for the first time, thinking "oh sweet, I get to try out this new toy" only to have a guy come in and take the gun away before you get to use it, berate you in front of every other NPC, and then kick you out of the Guild because YOU SUCK!

There are cheaper online alternatives to getting verbally abused, I'm sure.

Yeah...nothing like that in Ul'dah at all.

Also I think you're being incredibly overdramatic about it. Video games kinda have a tradition of treating you like a wet behind the ears noob early on; it's not that unusual. You're acting like it personally insulted you, your mother, and your grandparents.

    When it's just a game.

I don't have a huge problem not getting respect from the start. It was really more being teased with the gun thing, since I had hoped to build up some kind of gun-using mage at some point, no matter how impractical it is in practice. Sadly, it was not to be. Hopefully 2.0 can address this glaring design flaw.

It was at least 2 hours of rejection from the main story, and I never found it when you gained acceptance as I eventually started over in a new city.

I'm fine with a "wet behind the ears" approach, but sooner or later the game should spur you along about the great big adventure it wants to show you.

Instead it started off with you running around town and getting thrown out the door of every NPC you come across.

I'm actually expecting something along these lines, not even joking. I mean, it probably won't be. But I'd not blink if it is.

But then I set my expectations for this game "well, you can only go up from here" long long ago and they haven't budged, so I'll be shocked if they can convince enough people to give it another shot. What would REALLY shock me though is if they somehow manage to turn it around to the point this whole fiasco actually makes a profit.

Anyone have the numbers on what would be required to make a profit? Including whatever they've already lost getting to this point? I've had the impression since launch they've stayed funded through sheer force of will alone.

If anyone is actually all hurt over that Limsa quest, I can't even fathom it.

I mean, it's a town, full of pirates. 99% of them kiss your ass through and through. A single one tells you off in a pretty awesome scene and thats somehow horrible? Because no, the rest of the quests aren't even remotely like that. You do get relegated to the bootstrap unit of the naval thing but then again, no surprise there.
Isaudorel: Baderon send us another recruit, eh? Let me see your papers...

Isaudorel: Very well. I care little for who you believe yourself to be back in “the world,” because here you are nothing until you have proven different. Let us first see how you fare at our aptitude test. You may proceed to the firing range on the lower floor, recruit.
    * * *

Syhrdaeg: You see any suspicious types, let us know. The place has been swarming with pirates trying to sneak their way onto ships bound for Seal Rock.

    Barracuda Knight: Next!

Barracuda Knight: Fresh off the boat, eh? Alright, let's see you aim your firearm.

Barracuda Knight: What? You waltz your way into a town teeming with pirates and cutthroats, and don't even bother bringing a musket?

Reyner: Ease off, Corporal. Now lend the adventurer one of our weapons.

Reyner: You know how to use that? Then draw.

Reyner: Why, you look just like...

Mannskoen: Where did you get that weapon, recruit? Men! Which of you thought it would be wise to lend this civilian your firearm!? No one speaking up then, eh?

Mannskoen: Listen close, Lady Fancy-britches, you are a long way from your daddy's villa up in Fancy-shire. If you are lost, you'd best turn around and find yourself a porter to carry your bags back home. We're only looking for real men and women for this operation.

Mannskoen: Now, if the sea air has corroded your braincase and you're dreaming of epic sea battles with giant squid-beasts, there's little I can say that will prevent you from applying to join the 5th Levy. Unsurprisingly, the Barracudas are always looking for fresh replacements for that unit.

Sthalmann: Would you look at that, Sergeant. We may have found a keeper. Says his name is Merodaulyn.

Reyner: I don't know who taught you that firing stance, but in future, I'd suggest having somewhat more discretion when choosing a mentor. Back to the admissions desk, greenback.

The actual conversation text for anyone who is interested in how absolute horrible your poor adventurer gets treated.

Thing is, landlubbers be thinkin' there's some pirate code they all abide by, when they're really just guidelines.
I admit, I chuckled when one of the admirals actually said that in an instance. Between that and Radiohead Guy, at least one of the writers has a sense of humor.

It's not just the NPC dialogue that made it so bothersome, but the fact that you've spent your first 1-2 hours in the game running around and dealing with said scenes without doing any sort of actual gameplay. That bit with the firearms looked like the best opportunity to toss in a tutorial on how to use weapons and such, but you don't even get that.

After running around that port city and finally joining an NPC guild that will take you in, you embark on your first quest outside...and it was a boring escort quest where you kill about four things total.

It's just a really terrible first impression for a game that is supposed to be massive and multiplayer. It probably means nothing to people who can time sink their way through, but a slow pace is a slow pace.

More importantly, I'm just dying to know if you ever get an opportunity to use those firearms again, for reals.

Wow ok that LOOKS like something I'd be willing to play again! I guess I'm concerned about a few things still though. Will there be quest/hub progression, or are we going back to FF11/14 run into the field and grind forever? Will Gathering and crafting be simplified like in every other mmo ever? If/when i do play this i'll bring gally over (never did the advanced jobs though) but ill most likely re-roll... Also for the love of god SE I understand why we get 1 character slot because 1 character can be anything but get over it and don't charge for alts -_-.

The thing that really may hold me back is combat after TERA... Dunno my motivation to go back to TAB target like ever.

So are they actually calling the cataclysmic event "Meteor"? Just how deep are they going to reference those other games?

I mean, I'm fine with direct nods, especially if it lets you re-enact classic moments in a group (like fighting the Four Fiends of the Elements) but an original story would be nice too.

In any event, it's amazing how something as simple as a jump button increases navigation about a thousand percent. Anyone who played FFXI and FFXIV can tell you that getting around anywhere was a gigantic pain in the ass. Even ledges less than a foot tall were impassable due to the strict geometry.

In this video, they're hopping wherever they goddamn please. I can already imagine what a refreshing feeling it is to be up some stairs, witnessing your party member two floors down and be all "one sec dawg" (whooosh).

Another thing that impressed me was the character movement during battles. Both games featured deliberately stiff animations where your character barely changed their footing during battle. Here the Dragoon is jumping and flipping all over the place.

And another thing: for the first time in FF Online history, Dragoon actually looks fun!

I can't help but wonder what would have happened if, in some insane bizzaro world, the original FFXIV proved a moderate success. What kind of message would that send SE ("these people will buy any of our shit!") and what would Yoshi-P be doing now?

Edit: Also, due to billing not... billing I didn't have an active account for June July or August. However, I am getting billed 9.99 for the single character. Can I presume I had enough billing earlier in the year to get the reduced rate going forward?

Seems like they're bringing back the free trial period for new subscribers in November. That's when 2.0 beta launches. Although they call it a closed beta it seems like they'll be offering the free trials, so maybe it'll be a large group for the beta?

It's been about a month since I've started playing. Got a BLM to 50 and finished her AF over the weekend. Ul'dah certainly is the Jeuno of FF14, so take every opportunity you can to join in on any quests that you might need, or even shout for them. Anyways, if you need assistance with baby ifrit I can help with that. The first time I did it I was with other 50s. Ifrit was already dead by the time the cut scene ended.

I haven't really been following the payment plan much since I believe with absolute certainty that they'll revise their subscription fees again after launch, even if it does do reasonably well.

I'm real curious: at what point in the original game's launch did SE learn that their game was a dud? I remember that it wasn't even one year when they released their apology. Did they look at JP numbers or NA, or was it the angry comments online that clued them in?

So if you've fully paid for 60 days so far (free month does not count) and you resub today, it should immediately give you the Legacy note on your account.

As far as your other question, it wasn't even a year. The game launched in Sept, and by Dec basically the entire staff had been replaced; at least the important positions. I imagine, in all honesty, they knew before launch. But if somehow they weren't aware, it was probably immediately after since afaik they never got around to starting actual billing after launch because they said the game wasn't ready.

So...yeah....they knew immediately, if not already prior to launch. I honestly have no clue why they launched. Seriously. I've had a lot of fun playing the past couple months, even though I don't play a ton. But the game when I tried it at the end of beta was barely even functional enough to call a game. You could move around and uh...push buttons. Sometimes.

Oh, doy. I figured the free month wouldn't count.

What's the due date to qualify for Legacy status? Frankly, I don't know what I could achieve in two months that's worthwhile. The main storyline that supposedly continues after Meteor? Some exclusive gear?

As for why they launched when they (most likely) knew what they had? Simple, they wanted to hook those early adopters before WoW Cataclysm launched. Get subbers now, fix the game later.

As I mentioned before, it was profound arrogance. They've admitted their mistakes, which is good, and it looks like 2.0 will be everything they promised, which is even better.

But I hope they pay for this for years to come. I hope the people responsible have been fired, I hope the company has been restructured to avoid dumbass decisions like this again, and I hope they never stop pumping every single resource they have as a company to ensure the quality of the FF series from XIV 2.0 and onward.

They need to learn that shit like this does not fly. It doesn't matter if you're Square, Microsoft, or even Nintendo. Fucking over your customers for a quick buck is among the most evil things a corporation can do.

I hope it's become a real learning experience for Square Enix, because I want to get excited about my favorite series again.

I'll add Lloyd and Fade tonight. Of who I have on my friends list at the moment, there aren't enough regularly on that we've created an LS for.
We can scare up a LS if people want it though, now that more are playing.

Part of it, I think, was also the headline-grabbing "two Final Fantasies in one year" aspect. As I recall, it made its surprise debut at E3 '09, and a planned 2010 launch was an even bigger surprise. The alpha and beta tests highlighted several weaknesses but I don't think anybody was expecting that would be the final product. I can only guess that someone wanted to hold to the launch date rather than admit it wasn't ready - or seriously thought they could shit anything out and enough people would snap it up - but it went from beta to launch pretty much untouched. As The Dude With Herpes says, the game started when you clicked it and that was about it; there certainly wasn't enough content to make people overlook glaring gameplay problems.

Whatever the circumstance, the word 'hubris' fits quite nicely. With any luck this will encourage a real course correction for the company at large. Hell, once they take a stab at XV, they probably won't have much competition from other RPGs - on top of this generation winding down, several big-name trilogies are finishing up and (it's my understanding that) not as many Japanese companies are still going international - so they could theoretically have more exposure whenever it's ready. Who knows if they'll make the most of the opportunity, though.

It also depends just when they'll have FFXV ready.

If you noticed, they've been taking an unbelievably long time to release anything with FF printed on it. Versus, FFX HD, the freaking retina patch for FFT...it's a miracle they made the target date for FFXIV 2.0 (at least for now).

The latter, again, is probably because they're so committed to getting it out there (and also not suck). This is why I want this fiasco to get them rolling on all their other stuff with the same urgency.

Seriously, why is their development time so terrible lately? How does it take so long to release an HD port?
