I've always felt a snub nose .38 revolver was a true gumshoes weapon of choice but a 1911 is also a good choice.

Yup, that was my second gun purchase, 13 years ago now, a Springfield 1911 A1, albeit in Stainless Steel. Brand new from Springfield Armory cost about $300 in those days. I upgraded mine to near-custom quality with a few parts from Brownells installed by my local gunsmith.

Just picked up a stripped Anderson lower. Not sure what I'm going to do with this one yet. I built a 20" free floated AR and I built a keep it simple stupid 16" carbine. So...16" free float? 18" comp gun? 9mm upper (using magwell insert), 300 blackout? I'm not sure what to do here.

I bought 5 in October for $38 each because why not, its not like they're going to be that cheap again (and also because my FFL only charged me for 1 transfer)

What's the story on Commander-sized 1911's (or Officer?) No go?

Some days Blue wonders why anyone ever bothered making numbers so small; other days she supposes even infinity needs to start somewhere.

As I understand it, the 1911 was designed with the full-sized guiderod in mind and shorter barrels with shorter guiderods MIGHT have problems, altho this is very much up to debate.

Hickok45 has a couple of videos discussing this very question:

I meant to add that if you are looking for a "small" automatic in .45 ACP, you might be better off with a gun designed with that in mind, like say the Springfield XDS, which I recently purchased and am waiting for all of the tedious paperwork to complete so I can take possession.

Go depending on brand, my dad has a Dan Wesson CCO and has put around 9k rounds through it flawlessly (its also his EDC). I've shot it a bit and quite enjoyed it. I hear ruger makes a nice lightweight commander, as does most major companies. I've heard some negative things about kimbers but thats about it. As always do some research on that particular model you are looking at.

Kimber's are such pretty guns, but I've only ever heard that they are very ammo picky. So you end up putting a couple hundred hollow points through it before you know that ammo will work...and that ain't cheap.

Alternatively get an m&p or a glock in 45 and take a baseball bat to it in the basement for an hour and never get a misfire.

I did have a springfield XDS in .45 which I really enjoyed as a carry gun but had some light strikes that turned me pretty sour. The general belief is that I was limp wristing, but there were times where I was really paying attention and got a light strike...so I can't imagine a self defense situation where I'd be that focused and could potentially have the same happen so I sold it.

Yeah all 1911s are kind of picky about ammo and mags, but once you find something works you're pretty set.

Quick question for you guys. Went to look for a fairly specific gun from my local gun store to see if they could order it. Steyr M9 or L9. I can't remember exactly what he said but apparently those are really rare recently. Me, being completely out of any loop there might be on this, don't even know where to look to research this. I don't really want to buy online, as for some reason I can't put my finger on, it bothers me.

Steyr USA has next to no marketing, sales or distribution built up (last I checked their website they listed I think only 1 or 2 stores in my state that sell their products) so buying online is almost required.

As for buying online what bothers you? You will more often that not pay significantly less.

The only reason against buying online is you can't touch and feel the gun before you buy it. Other than that, it's usually better than buying from a LGS.

I can't describe it. I don't know the laws or rules. I do know that Florida has a waiting period but I don't know what it is. I don't know, I would feel odd buying a car online as well.

Buying "online" is somewhat of a misnomer as you still go through a gun store in your state for a lot of stuff. Essentially you ask one if they're willing to do a transfer of the gun you want to buy and assuming it's one they don't stock they'll usually agree. Then you pay for the gun from the online seller, have them ship it to the gun store you're working with, pay whatever the store charges for doing transfers, go through background checks whatever as normal, and then pick it up from the store when everything clears. Some gunsmiths also are able to do this since they have to have a Federal Firearms License to receive and send back guns people ship to them for work.

Your other option when looking for something less common is to hit up a gun show but that's really hit and miss.

    ^That.

The laws are the same as an in person purchase at an FFL.

As a side note on ffl transfers Ive found that pawn shops are more likely to do the transfers without hassle or big transfer fees as they arent usually directly competing but still carry ffls. Wheras if you go through a dedicated gun shop they will often try to direct you to their stock.

My latest, a Springfield XDS in .45 ACP:

    agtx0b1zgsm4.jpeg

Note the extended magazine. The standard five-shot magazine leaves my bottom two fingers hanging off the bottom of the gun, a very uncomfortable grip for me, while extended mags fit just right. It's very lite, so the 230-grain .45 ammo which my Model 1911 eats up while saying, "Is that all you've got ??" really causes the XDS to bounce around. Think I'll try the 185-grain next time, should be much smoother.

Havent decided yet. Strongly considering ditching the Rugers for a Buckmark or something. Also my Springfield 1911 has made my Rock Island Armory redundant. I put it on Gunbroker.

I dont shoot nearly as often as I'd like but I've been stockpiling ammo over the years. Some of it (like the bulk of my .22lr) I actually bought before the Sandy Hook panic, others I've been buying up this year in anticipation of the upcoming election apocalypse.

Anyways I just did an inventory of my ammo and it came out to:

    ~4850 .22lr
    3624 9mm
    1570 .223/5.56
    960 5.45x39
    666 .45acp
    548 12ga
    336 .357 magnum
    256 .38 special
    200 .308/7.62x51
    114 .44 magnum
    100 7.62x39
    44 .44 special

I dont even own guns chambered in those last 4 (yet).

Related to that, someone once mentioned being at the range in the early 2000s where someone was firing a 10 mm. When they were done, they said they didn't reload so others were free to pick up the brass. This caused a race among even reloaders who didn't have 10 mm guns but might.

As the saying goes, "I just have too much ammo" said nobody, ever.

I have purposefully avoided buying a .40 calibre automatic because I don't want to create a need for ANOTHER size ammo besides .45 ACP, 9mm, and .357 Magnum. That said, my next gun will probably be a small J-Frame or equivalent revolver firing .38 Special, altho I'm leaning towards the Ruger instead of the Smith & Wesson. Nighthawk's new line of revolvers has my attention, too: https://www.shootingillustrated.com/articles/2016/5/16/nighthawk-custom-and-korth-a-new-level-of-revolvers/

Speaking of S&W J-frames, I own a 637, and I would steer you away from ultralight J-frames like my 637. They are just too light to fire comfortably. Instead, I would steer you towards the model 60 or model 36, which are of identical size to the 637, but 6 oz heavier, greatly reducing felt recoil. And you won't notice the extra 6 oz while carrying either.

Finally got to go shoot it a little bit ago. It only came with one mag so I snagged some off the interwebs and off I went. First the good, the slide feels like it's on glass rails. The trigger felt fantastic, very much like a 1911 trigger but with a much more comfortable trigger geometry/face. The heaviness of the gun completely tamed felt recoil, combined with how a .45 round recoils made for an extremely pleasant shooting experience. Things I don't like are, the grips have to go. I know not many companies are making replacement grips but I need to find something thinner and grippier for my stubby fingers. I absolutely adore the VZ grips on my 75B and 1911. Extremely thin and very grippy, trying to find something similar. Also I had serious trouble picking out the blacked out front sight, though this may have been made worse since I was shooting inside. I'll be ordering the FO replacement front sight EAA offers. I didn't manage to get pictures of my targets, but it grouped extremely well all the way out to 35 yards. A large tour group came in as I was trying to take pictures and I noped the hell out of there. (There was a language barrier and the RO safety brief wasn't going as well as it seems like it should have, I didn't want to stick around. Love their enthusiasm though, great to see people that excited about getting to shoot.)

Anyone have experience with Carcano rifles?

I recently saw 11.22.63 and became interested in getting a Carcano, because I only have one bolt action (Mosin), and I'm interested in getting another. My other choice is a Ruger American Rifle (probably in 30-06 as I have a semi auto .308 already).

How rare is the ammunition (7.35 and 6.5)? Is one cartridge more difficult to find than the other, and is it worth looking for one chambering or the other?

edit: I saw some 7.35 carcano for about .75 cents a round. Does anyone make reloading tools for this cartridge?
