Ugh. Seriously thinking about getting an iPad 2. My laptop is dying and I mostly used it for taking notes in class anyway. I'd probably get a wifi version since I have an iPhone 4.
personally i would not want to do extensive typing like taking notes on an ipad
I have written amazingly long things on the iPad no Problems. I probably wouldn't want to write a whole book... but 85wpm is nothing to scoff at, and it's more than sufficient for note taking.
Are there any good word processing apps you would suggest? Mainly one that allows saving to .doc.

Speaking of Pages, whatever happened to wireless printing from iDevices? One of the things an iPad has to do if I want to get one for my mother is be a word processor. Pages fills that gap, but without a way to print from the thing its usefulness seems stunted.

well, if you mom has a printer hooked up to a mac, there is a handy tool called airprint hacktivator that makes a shared printer of any kind an AirPrint compatible one.
there is a windows version of the utility as well, but its in german. Once it is set up though, you never have to think about it again.
The simplest, yet more expensive, solution is to buy an HP printer that is airprint compatible. Then, you don't even need a computer to be on to use it.

What do you mean "what happened to it?"
AirPrint works great if you have a compatible printer.
You just have to have a compatible printer.
I.e. One of HP's e-Print compatible ones, generally.
Also has anyone become aware of any stealth upgrades for auto-correct on the iPad? It seems to be doing much better right now, even if it still can't figure out double-taps...

Well, I'm still at home with the parents and we've got two printers. A Brother Monochrome Laser Printer with Built-In wireless that's on the wireless network, and a Epson Inkjet All-In-One Printer that's on the network via the USB port on the Airport Express that powers the network.
I'd hate to buy a whole new printer just to print from one device when the two printers I have work perfectly with everything else so far.

I thought AirPrint was supposed to work with any printer shared via Bonjour.
It did and does, and apple decided to get rid of that in favor of a more commercial offering.
But please don't skip over the first part of my post you quoted, where I tell you how crazy easy it is to make any printer work with airprint.
I'll give it a shot, but neither of the printers are directly connected to my Mac.
if your mac can print from them, and you can share the printer on your mac, then you are done. Your mac just has to be on and available for the iDevice to find it.

Heck you can't even stream netflix over 3G so I don't know what would push someone up to 10GB per month.
You can totally stream netflix over 3G. Does the Netflix app on ipad not do it? I always tether to my phone and netflix is really good about scaling the quality of the stream to match available bandwidth. I guess if it doesn't work on iPad it is because the app is deciding not to do it.

Having personally streamed Netflix over my iPad, I can confirm that it is possible and completely feasible. In my area, I was even able to do it without needing to give it time to pre-load and without pauses in the feature.

Okay, so the Airprint Activator application works, but it's yet to be seen if it'll work out for the long run. If my mother has to come over to my iMac and launch that every time she wants to print it may not be worth the hassle. We'll see.
Now the debate over purchasing the 16GB iPad for her continues.

She doesn't.
You run it once, it hacks your Mac to share printer over AirPrint. Done.
You can delete the app now if you want, it's unneeded.

How easy it's it to type on an Ipad while laying or reclining in bed?
I use my current macbook mainly in bed or in my lap to do the usual web browsing and using messaging or posting in the forum . Would this still be painless to do on an Ipad?

Nobody carries the iPad 2.
Yet.
USA launch is tomorrow duder.
I was just expecting them to have at least some kind of product page with tech specs, general information, and a giant COMING OUT MARCH 11TH! on it. But saw nothing.
Edit: Hell, the 3DS doesn't come out for a few more weeks and there's a product page for each color.
Amazon isn't an official retailer -- Apple products are sold through Amazon via affiliates
so, no, there wouldn't be. and there are no preorders, so it wouldn't matter anyway.

I can't decide whether to pull the trigger on one tomorrow or wait. Any speculation on to how available they'll be after Friday or how long the wait will be for them to become available again?
That's pretty awesome, but I'd be interested to see how it compares to an Apple TV with a normal receiver.
Hopefully I'll be able to partially answer that soon. My dad is currently running Apple TV directly to a TV, and he is going to buy that Pioneer receiver as soon as it comes out. My guess is the advantage will lie less in the AirPlay functionality (which as noted is already kind of there in Apple TV) and more in AirPlay + complete receiver control all in one place. I can't wait to go home and see it.
Weird. I was really looking forward to those, but never saw note of them after the 4.2 dev stuff.
Sure wish I'd had a chance to update.
I'm pretty sure it's not in 4.3, can't find it anywhere anyway.
WHat are they? I'll try them out on my iPad when I get home.
I'm confused about this. I'm seeing a few blogs that mention the multitasking gestures are still available in the GM and final release of 4.3, but I didn't see them when I installed it on my iPad, and the gestures themselves certainly didn't work.
Is it possible they're only available for those who updated from 4.3b1? Or did they make their return, but are disabled by default?
I'm at work and my iPad is not, so I can't test it, but maybe we can get to the bottom of this. If there's a way to enable them, I'd definitely want to do so.
