Evidently, they have not been enabled for default 4.3.
Work-arounds may exist, but for those thinking something is wrong with their individual installation: there is nothing wrong, they don't work for anyone yet. (Possibly on purpose)

Ok. So it looks like I'm getting an ipad due to needs and the fact it has a massive discount at the moment with the ipad 2 coming out at the end of the month over here.
Question I had is about keyboards ('cos I'm going to need one for a variety of reasons, a lot of them medical). Generally, should I get the keyboard with dock or just the wireless keyboard? Is one better than the other? Are there other keyboards I should consider?

I don't have an iPad, but I can vouch for the Apple bluetooth keyboard. It feels fantastic to type on, good range, and it just feels nice and solid.

I am also curious about keyboards and opinions thereof.
Apple's keyboards are fantastic. I fucking love the chicklet-style keys.
The official keyboard dock looks like it would be clunky to travel with. I have the Apple bluetooth keyboard and a nice third-party stand, and it works like a charm.

I just purchased the official ipad keyboard dock, and holy hell... this this is nice.
Yeah, the backing on it is ridiculous, and traveling around with it will be a major pain in the ass...
But I can now, with FTP On the go Pro, actually do full on PHP coding with a live web preview in app, and do it all from my ipad. Also, the iPad specific buttons are really nice, and I wouldn't have gotten them with the bluetooth keyboard.
I think I am going up upgrade my murse to one of the bigger token bags so I can haul this bad boy with me everywhere I go.

I'm shocked nobody's written a jailbroken app to let you customize keyboard shortcuts for a bluetooth keyboard. They've gotten wireless mice to work, you'd think someone would have gotten around to it by now.
this dude on macrumors is claiming you can enable them via XCode without actually linking the device with a provisioning profile
edit: If anyone tries this, be sure to let us know which version of XCode you were using. He states he used 3.2.5, but 4 was released yesterday.
edit edit: it also seems that it's just a plist setting, so jailbroken iPads should be able to enable these pretty easily
edit^3: you may also be able to just edit the plist with iPhone Explorer on a non-jailbroken iPad, but I can't confirm that yet either
I can confirm that the Xcode method linked in the ms rumors post above does work for the 4.3 gold master with Xcode 3.2.5. My iPad has never been enabled for development, nor did I install any 4.3 beta before the gold master, which is the same build as 4.3 final.
So my nearest best buy got in 20 iPad 2s. All wifi only, 5 black 64GB, 5 black 32GB, 5 black 16GB, 5 white 16GB.
The nearest Target only received 5 black 64GB.
I was able to get the white 16GB for my wife at best buy while she waited in line at target for a 64GB black for me.
Just made my first post with my new iPad 2.
Also got a green smart cover feor mine. It's pretty sweet.
I was able to make my day 1 purchase happen just barely. I went to just set up Verizon, but it looks like that initial set up will charge me. So...do I just wait until I need to purchase some data before setting that up?
I managed to order mine about 10 minutes before 1 AM this morning, but only got a shipping confirmation for the smart cover. It's going to be a long wait, isn't it.

stood in line for ~5 hours, they ran out of all ipads except verizon 3g, got a new shipment 5 minutes after telling us, took 30 minutes to jerk off in the supply room with all the new ipads, then let us in one by one
My iPad had the multitask gestures with 4.3 installed from iTunes and I took no special actions with my iPad other than MAYBE installing a dev copy of an unrelated app.
iPad refuses to update. If I ask to check for updates it says 4.2 is the most recent version, and if I try to restore it says The Requested Resouce was not found.

Sorry if it's been covered already, but what makes this device such a "must have"?
I've got netbooks, laptops (including a Macbook), and a Droid X, as do all of the people I know that are rushing to buy an Ipad right right now. What void does it fill? I feel like I'm missing something here.
Not an Apple hater at all - been using them for years going back to my 1st Apple IIc. I've played with a few iPads and I'm just not getting the hype. Even my non-techie freinds are going berserk about the things, and all they do with them is play Angry Birds.

If you connected the iPad while XCode was open and used the organizer to install the development copy of the app, it would've enabled the gestures for you.
Also if you've used development apps in the past it may have had the flag already set.
They definitely are not a part of iOS 4.3 by default, but as I explained above. It's pretty easy to enable them even if you aren't a developer. And they are awesome.

Have you asked your friends why they want one?
Personally, I want one because I want a competent, portable internet-thing that I can also do other stuff with as necessary, and I cannot abide netbooks with their terrible, tiny screens, worse keyboards and ugly formats. Why would you even want one of those things? Seems everyone I knew a couple of years ago was going crazy for them but they just don't make any sense. What, an underpowered laptop made from the cheapest parts possible trying to run an OS and full-size programs that would make a full-size desktop groan? What possible utility could they have?

- Xcode will report that the device is unrecognized for development -- this may sound like a problem, but if you now check the iPad's Settings app under General, you should see a new option for Multitasking Gestures.
I haven't tested this on iOS 4.3 final (though I believe it's the same as the GM) or on XCode 4, but it should work.

I'm genuinely confused.
For me, even though I'm a pretty big computer nerd I still don't have a laptop, netbook, or eReader. My work supplies me with an original motorola droid and I have a pretty freaking boss desktop I built 2 years ago, but that's it. Oh I have a gen 1 ipod touch that I never see because my wife hordes it.
So i really thought about it and an iPad is much more elegant and portable than a laptop or even a netbook. I wanted something for web browsing video watching, news, book reading, and game playing that was good for the couch on a trip in the car or at an airport. With the iPad I don't have to worry about battery life or finding someplace to plug up because it lasts 10hrs. It's shiny slick and pretty portable while still giving me a better experience than web browsing on my touch or droid.
So yeah If I had a laptop, droid/iphone, netbook, and kindle/nook then I can see not needing or wanting an ipad, but my ipad replaces those things for me (save for the phone). The things I WOULD do on a laptop/netbook are things that the ipad handles really well (internet, email, games, videos). I'd much rather browse the internet on the ipad than deal with power cords and either a touchpad (f'ing hate them) or dealing with a mouse and finding a surface to use it on.

What I find oddly amusing, is that none of these people I know really seem to care about the portability aspect. When asked "What makes you want one?" the universal response is "Because it's awesome". I doubt half of them will ever take them outside their house.
Don't get me wrong, eventually I plan on having some tablet type computer (I'll probably just do as I've done with just about everything else, and let the early adopters work out the kinks, then get one when they are cheaper and better). But it just amazes me that so many people I know that are not really computer users outside of net browsing and syncing up their iTunes are waiting in lines and scrambling to get their hands on one.

That's not actually that amazing; the iPad is quite literally designed for those people. It makes computing a tactile, intuitive experience (instead of a series of mechanical expediencies tied together with pretty pictures) for the first time in a long time.

Do you ever have a moment where you're in some part of your house/apartment and want to browse the web/watch something/whatever on a screen bigger than your X, but you don't want the hassle of setting up a laptop, waiting for the OS to wake up, waiting for the browser to open, etc etc etc? If so... that's the iPad.
Already having all of those things does lessen its value a bit.

for me, i have a device smaller than hell that cost next to nothing, goes with me in a tiny sidebag that I barely notice I have on me, which allows me to:
patch my servers
ssh manage devices
code in php / html / css on a live site
remote desktop manage client machines
handle my billing and invoicing for clients
maek poasts
play pretty advanced games
watch television and movies while on the subway.
honestly, this is a life-changing device for me. True, a macbook air could do it too, but it would cost more than twice as much, and it would lose some of the ease of use in standing situations the iPad affords me.

you have to undertsand that this is not my first rodeo, and I have been trying to get a device like this for the better part of 15 years now.
the closest I hove gotten before this was a Motion Computing WinXP tablet edition device, which had 2-3 hours of battery life, sucked ass at character recognition, needed a pen to interact with the screen, weighed 4 pounds or so, and cost about 3000 dollars.
this device, while it doesnt run traditional software solutions for my needs, does everything that device did at 1/4 to 1/5 the cost, with three times the battery life and about 1/3 the weight.

it's irrelevant whatever rodeo you're on. 700 bucks is still not just walking around money and i think it's pretty weird for you to say it costs next to nothing
So I had been saving up this month for the Nintendo 3DS, but in lieu of Best Buy's 2 years no interest offer for the iPad 2, I'm seriously considering nabbing that instead, using the 3DS cash as a down payment and pay the rest in small incriminates.
I'm mainly looking at the 32GB No 3G model, as I see no real reason to add an extra $130 for the 3G, as I'm already under an AT&T 3G contract with my iPhone; the only time I would be using 3G is to check my e-mail or a couple of websites anyway, so the phone already has me covered in that respect.
Is Best Buy my best bet (pardon the pun) for an iPad 2? More importantly, is there a site that would auto update on which stores have it in stock (it was currently sold out when I checked today, but they said they may restock tomorrow)?

there is an economy relevant to the device you are getting.
if I got a car for five thousand dollars that got me where I needed to go, and did so with style and penache, and actually had features the 40,000 dollar vehicles did not have, I would say I got my vehicle for next to nothing.

you're being silly though with that comparision. you can get a netbook for 300 dollars that'll do everything you want (give or take). sure it'll be slow but it costs next to nothing. etc

This really isn't something you can argue, I suspect. I really don't think "$700" is large enough to say it is objectively too much money--especially for specialty electronics like the iPad.
I think maybe we're all getting side-tracked here? One guy asked, in good faith, what the appeal was, and everyone who had one gave their view. Arguing with people about that view seems kinda silly.

I'd like to second that question: my only experience with Apple is the iPhone, which was well worth the investment. But what are some things I could do with the iPad that I couldn't really do with the iPhone? Right now the main draw for me is that it's a "thinner, sleeker laptop", as well as providing a large enough screen to serve as a futuristic reader for comics and books.
you're being silly though with that comparision. you can get a netbook for 300 dollars that'll do everything you want (give or take). sure it'll be slow but it costs next to nothing. etc
the lack of always on 3G without contract, and the inability to use it while standing on a train, coupled with its general inability to function as a full blown computer (even though it tries REALLLY hard to be one) makes it a completely different device from what I have wanted.
i mean, they have gotten cheaper since I last looked, but this was the only real thing that existed in the space the iPad has come to dominate. So, to me, an iPad is like paying next to nothing for an amazing tablet that works better than any I have used before and paid so much more for.
