The CPU and GPU in the iPad 2 are pretty significant improvements

there's not much taking advantage of it now, but it's a much more powerful device.

iPad vs iPad 2 web surfing:

I've used my iPad way more than I thought I would. Too bad I can't upgrade every year! I'll admit though I use Atomic web browser instead of Safari so tab refreshing hasn't been an issue for me.

The RAM boost makes such a big difference.

I'll likely upgrade when the iPad 3 is out. Hopefully that will be next summer, as that will stagger my major upgrades.

I am likewise anticipating upgrading in the next round.

Certainly, however, in a choice between the iPad2 versus iPad; the iPad2 is the better purchase, with clear advantages over the original that merit an upgrade.

True, though I must say $350 is a damn fine price for a device that's still very solid.

The lighter thing actually sways me towards the Ipad2 because it seems like it would be so much easier to read E-books on it as I tend to hold things with one hand.

You know, I think a price-point closer to $225 - $250 would put the iPad1 in direct competition with what remains of the netbook market, in which it would be a solid winner.

Though, in fairness, I don't plan on selling mine--if I did have such plans, I'd probably try to eek out every penny of $350. ;)

I use my iPad daily, and love the hell out of it, but it still works perfectly and I can't justify upgrading, as much as I'd like to. I'll probably get the iPad 3, though. Upgrading every other year, for both this and the iPhone, makes far more sense to me than upgrading every year. It's better financially, of course, and the performance jump will be huge. I'm still on an iPhone 3GS and I fully expect the iPhone 5 to blow my mind.

The only reason I could even consider getting an ipad was the price drop of the old ones; though it still really annoys me that the UK prices are the same as the US just with a £ rather than a $.

When I touched down here and saw that, I felt so bad for everyone over here who was forced to put up with that nonsense. :(

Is that standard practice for Apple products across the UK?

I don't think you'll have to worry too much except on brand new iPad 2 centric apps, since the iPhone's CPU won't be updated until July. Developers working on universal apps will want to ensure compatibility for the iPad and iPhone 4 for a while, so while the iPad 2 might get updated graphics, I'm sure the original model won't be left in the dust for some time. Don't forget, most apps and games still fully support the 3GS.

There'll probably be a few a handful of apps that are iPad 2 specific in the coming months, and more after the iPhone 5's release, but whether or not they really matter to you depends on what developers come up with.

I really do plan on making my iPad 1 last until next year; this thing is still just as amazing to me as it was when the device first came off, and a thinner, lighter, faster model doesn't change core functionality for me.

Higher resolution screen will push me over the edge.

So I just picked up an white iPad 2 and one of the smart covers (I like the smart cover).

What are some must have games and apps I need to get? Already got Netflix, and subsequently watched an episode of The Universe while I pooped....if nothing else this thing was worth it for that.

So what are some of the "must have" apps and games? Obviously I already have Netflix.

For some reason Best Buy doesn't let you check the availability of iPads anymore. I wonder if they're understocked or still getting reasonable shipments? I don't want to put down the $100 and have to wait another month or something.

Also, I read lots of people trying to buy their iPad 2's tax-free using certain methods. How much extra would tax cost on it anyway (I'm a FL resident), and would that be applied to BB's 2 years no finance plan?

Avoid this game like the plague. Catan HD has a terrible trade system, it jumps around too much with resource dispersement, and in trying to hide the information from other players, makes for a very clunky game experience. Considering how much I love Settlers, I tried so hard to like this port, but it's really terrible. (To be fair, I don't regret paying money for it--I just hope they keep developing the UI a bit more. All the basic bits are there, it just needs significant updating.)

Sage has put out some excellent ports of board games (Ra and Medici), however, so I would recommend going for those.

If you don't need the full word processing capabilities and templates of Pages, I'd recommend picking up either PlainText or iA Writer (or both). They're both excellent, minimalist text editors which integrate with DropBox for syncing. iA Writer is a little more full featured and is meant as more of a writer's tool, but PlainText is nice too.

One thing I love about iA Writer though: Arrow Keys.

The issue is we don't know when we're getting new iPad 2's. And the longer you wait to put down a deposit, the further back in line you're going to be--I assure you that while you're waiting, other people aren't.

Also, tax depends on which model and your state sales tax. Looks like Florida hovers around 7, so, if you go for the 64g 3g model, you're looking at like $58 in tax. And yes, the tax is included in the no-interest on the card. As is anything you buy at the same time, like a cover/keyboard/whatever else. Everything on the same receipt.

I believe the deposit is you buying a 100 dollar Best Buy gift card, which can then be used for the purchase of the iPad when it comes in. So in your case, if you get the deposit in the form of that card, you could just put it toward a Xoom.

Yeah, the BB deposit gets handed directly back to you in the form of a gift card, which is a fantastic idea, that I hope continues for big products.

And I'm not sure on whether we can see which number you are in line. I'll ask today when I get into work and see if it's possible and let you know.

You know, I'm not sure if gift cards can be used to pay off the card. But I'll ask that too. I know you can pay the card in-store, so maybe? But I'd be inclined to say no.

Employee discount on Apple products is virtually nothing, unfortunately. Maybe $5 at most? Best Buy makes almost no profit off of computers or tablets. Sometimes Apple has "accommodations" for Best Buy employees, but even those aren't very big.

However, the Employee discount requires an employee # as well as having your ID checked if you don't work at the particular store. And the accommodations have to be accessed through Best Buy's internal system usually, or require sending in a copy of a pay stub as proof of employment.

But, really, opening a Best Buy card is totally worth it if you like technology and shop there enough. Spend $150 in the store on anything at one time, and you'll always get no interest for 6 months. Spend over $430 and its 18 months.

I mean, if you're going to spend the money anyway, you can't beat the deal. A lot of people instinctively hate store credit cards, but Best Buy's is absolutely amazing.

Right, just curious. I wasn't actually going to bug you for your employee info. :)

Last question: is there a way to have the minimum amounts automatically debited from your bank account, or will you have to manually write checks and/or pay at the store?

Mirroring only works on the iPad 2. I don't know if other adapters get the benefit, but the software update isn't going to make it work for your iPad 1.

But I'm still wondering if it's possible, or could be possible in the future, to use the iPad 2 to display whatever is going on to your TV via the HDMI hookup.

Being able to use the iPad 2 like an inexpensive capture card (depending) to record game footage and upload to YouTube would be a huge deal-breaker for me.

Being able to use the iPad 2 like an inexpensive capture card (depending) to record game footage and upload to YouTube would be a huge deal-breaker for me.

Right now I don't think there is anything like this and I really doubt you'll see an App Store app do this. More than likely you'll need to jailbreak and install an app that way.

Don't you mean "a huge selling point" to you? I mean, you're not gonna be like "this iPad does extra stuff? Fuck that, deal's off Apple!" Right?
