Thanks for the answers, everyone. I'm going to stop at BB tomorrow and decide whether to plop the $100 from there.
But I'm still wondering if it's possible, or could be possible in the future, to use the iPad 2 to display whatever is going on to your TV via the HDMI hookup.
Being able to use the iPad 2 like an inexpensive capture card (depending) to record game footage and upload to YouTube would be a huge deal-breaker for me.
Wait, are you saying you want to go from iPad display -> TV (a la a capture card for iPad content), or TV -> iPad display (using the iPad as a capture card for TV content)? Unless I'm mistaken, the former is exactly what the HDMI adapter does with the iPad 2 - you can mirror any app automatically, regardless of whether it has external output support built-in or not.
I think he was looking to do the latter, Prawn. Go TV => iPad and have the iPad record/store/upload whatever the TV was feeding into it. Which I'm not sure is a plan Apple's got. I'm not even sure that's something you could do with a jailbreak.

The solution does not exist yet.
But since iPad does have USB host via the USB adapter, I am sure there is some way to write drivers for various USB capture devices like the Dazzle, and then trick photo booth or camera into using it as a camera device.
I doubt any developers will do it, honestly... but it can be done.

Let's play Mario Kart or something...
I'd forgotten that it could connect to input devices like that, but it obviously can. I don't know why I forgot. There was that little spat that verifone tried to start with Square just a bit ago, and that was over an input device. I just didnt put it together. derp a derp :P

This. I would imagine such a method would require a jailbroken iPad (which I intend to do), and it would be a real selling point for me (see, I can write things correctly).

Ever since I bought my iPad 2 I've been TRYING to kill the battery and every day it makes it to bedtime. It's really impressive. I mean, I can't forget to charge it at night, but it's solid.

Yah, I've found the battery life of the iPad 2 to be pretty good for what's under the hood. Remember it's twice the RAM and twice the CPU power of the original iPad.
I saw an article on Gizmodo that some percentage of iPad2s have a backlight bleed problem on the top and bottom of the screen--have you guys noticed this at all? (crosses fingers that the answer is "No")

You can transfer files to/from iDevice to a computer you've got LogMeIn installed on, as well as transfer files between two computers you have tied to your LogMeIn account.
So I've decided to put off getting an iPad 2 until at least May (my birthday). The reason? It's just plain impossible to get one now, and Best Buy has completely severed all ties in attempting to know ahead of time when more will ship. They've stopped doing the $100 reserves, their site doesn't list store availability, and the folks there have admitted that they simply have no clue when new stock arrives, and when it does it's usually cleared out in less than an hour.
I was going to put off getting the 3DS this month, but in light of news that sites are starting to send me 3DS games to review, I'm pretty much obligated now. So waiting until May is a wise choice for several reasons.
No bleed on mine! Yeah, I'm excited I got mine on day one, especially since the WSJ and ABC News are saying there are further delays due to Japan's disasters. Actually, I just posted my iPad on my criagslist just in case the prices get so high I'd be nuts not to sell and wait for supply to catch up. (Though now that I'm addicted, will I be able to give it up?)

I had the exact same talk with a Best Buy guy today. He said that if it continues at this rate, it'll be three to four weeks until they even clear the reserve list they built up before they stopping reserves.

iPad syncs take a LONG time! Mainly the copying purchases part. I guess the games and apps are bigger but it took me by surprise going from 20 second syncs on the iPod.
I am now angry at Apple for iMovie. I imported some QuickTime videos and I was going to make a fun video but it won't import the video files. So I guess iMovie only works with the crappy iPad camera. Ugh!

Damn me for wanting a specific case for my ipad1. It seems that ordering online means that it takes over a week and a half to arrive, whereas I could have gone into the shop last Monday and bought one.
I am now angry at Apple for iMovie. I imported some QuickTime videos and I was going to make a fun video but it won't import the video files. So I guess iMovie only works with the crappy iPad camera. Ugh!
Seems like you just need to convert the file format:

Seems like you just need to convert the file format:
Thanks but every video converter I can find for PC is $30+, and an app that MIGHT let you do it on the iPad is $30. (1st Video) I don't feel like what I'm trying to do should be this costly when I can get the editing software for $5. This seems to be just some arbitrary decision on Apple's part.
I'm back to Windows Movie Maker (bleh) but at least they let me import videos. It's not exactly the "synergy of technology and the fine arts" that Jobs promised in the press release.

The "synergy of technology and fine arts" still requires that you're using a file format supported by your video editor. A .mov file is just a container format, it doesn't necessarily hold data that iMovie (or iTunes, or your iPad) can read.
Does the video play in the Videos app? If not, convert it to iPad compatible MP4 using handbrake, which costs exactly $0. Then, import it to the iPad using iTunes as you would any video. Then open it in iMovie.
The FAQ indicates video can only come from the camera roll too, and at least some other people are had similar impressions. After re-watching the iMovie commercial from the press conference, they did say that video can come from the iPad or imported from iPod or iPhone. So I guess it works as designed I just don't like that design decision.
I have video taken from the internet in a format which will play in the video application. If the iPad thinks it needs to be in the camera roll, what I do want to do, is find a cheap or free way to "trick" the iPad into thinking that my videos (which DO play on iPad, and are mpeg-4 format when I uploaded them to iPad) are in the camera roll. Maybe then iMovie will let me use them.
If I come up with anything, I'll let you guys know, but I'm not the only one who thought iMovie could do this, so know that limitation before purchasing if you haven't already.

Some threads on the Apple Support forums seem to indicate that while it's possible to convert videos into a format that iMovie will read, it's not easy.
Man, that's a terrible error by Apple or something that needs correction. Sorry, Sharp: I did not mean to imply you were doing something incorrectly!

Fffffff. I was third on the reserves for the 64gig, black, model at my Best Buy, and I was starting to think that I had missed their call or something, considering that the Apple store two minutes away said they would be getting more shipments the next day. While I might not get mine for a while yet , at least I don't have to be calling places on the off chance they might, maybe have one in, some time that week. Small comfort, but something!
Hell, maybe I'll get lucky and my store will get 4 of the model I reserved in.

Can you just drop the files in the ipad's DCIM folder?
I don't know I'll have to try that...l but for now I have another warning for new iPad owners: KEEP YOUR NAILS TRIMMED! I was told not to get a s reen protector becaus ethe screen is already protected, but alas, it seems my fingernail (which isn't grossly long by any standard) put a 2 or 3mm scratch in the screen of my new favorite toy/tool. So please heed my warning new owners!
