I think finding the gaming mouse that suits chrishallett83's needs is a mystery that must be solved, though.
It doesn't need to be a 'gaming' mouse. Just a solid, big mouse without 700 buttons, that has horizontal and vertical scrolling, and a nice texture to it.
EDIT: Called the missus, whilst she's a lefty, she mouses right-handed. So no need for ambidextrous.
Thinking about a new mouse, because I'm fucking sick and tired of my current wireless mouses tendency to be a reprehensible piece of shit. Not registering clicks, and erratic tracking are starting to piss me off.
It's a Microsoft Standard Wireless Optical Mouse model 1025 (taken straight off the sticker on the base).
I want:
Ambidextrous. (I am right-handed, the missus is a southpaw)
Wired. (or convertible)
2 buttons. (left click, and surprise surprise, right click...)
A scroll wheel that works perfectly.
Side scrolling. (whether that's from the main scroll wheel clicking side to side or a secondary side mounted thumb scroll wheel I do not care)
Size. I have big hands, currently my ring finger and pinky finger are held against the side of the mouse and drag on the table. Mouse must be BIG. And preferably with a little shelf for my pinky to rest on. I like to palm the mouse, no fingertip claw grip for me.
Weight. Must be nice and heavy. I don't like super light, flimsy, anything.
Textured surface. My apartment has no air-con, in summer it gets to well over 110 degrees fahrenheit here, therefore my hands will at times be sweaty. Don't want a slippery mouse.
I do not FPS at all. I will be Fallout 3 and New Vegas-ing in the future, at the moment I mainly internet and Minecraft. So 27,000 DPI means shit to me.
The mouse I currently have is part of a keyboard/mouse wireless duo, the keyboard is much nicer, but still annoying, because it does drop the occasional letter. So recommend me a nice wired keyboard too please - no 'leet gamer' crap, I just wanna do some typing - nice key feel, good size, and long life is all I care about. I don't need multi-coloured flashing lights or a damn screen on my keyboard...
Honestly it would be hard to find a mouse that meets all of those expectations while also being ambidextrous.
If you have a USB port to spare you would be better off just buying two mice.
In fact, me and my wife are both RIGHT HANDED and we each have our own mouse - I have a g9x because I am a giant gamer nerd and she has a mx518 because she loves how it fits her hand.
You can run multiple keyboards/mice at the same time, and its easy to push the other one aside or even unplug it and stick it in the desk drawer (if you have a couple front-end usb plugs on your case).
How can the g9x be comfortable? I currently have a bluetooth V470 that's serving me well enough, but I do want a fancy mouse. The G500 reminds me of an older Logitech mouse that I ran into the ground, I just don't know if I can be corded again, laptop being my main computer and all.
I do have a question, anyone have experience with the Razor Naga?

That's fair, I never use the G500 on my netbook. It's better employed on a desktop.

G9X isn't comfortable, at least not if you have normal size hands. I had a G9X for three days before I took it back and exchanged it for my current Mamba.
The G9X is a neat mouse, with the adjustable weights and crap, but it was literally designed for midget people.

I don't think think literally is the word you want.
Guys is there such a thing as a bluetooth Mac and PC compatible mouse that isn't designed for midgets and isn't total fucking shit?

Literally is exactly the word I wanted. It's an internetism, meant to add humorous emphasis to something, even when 'literally' would not be the normal word of choice. For instance, you are literally Hitler*.
My Razer Lachesis is still going strong. Wiring up Macros for it too is simple and simply awesome when the buttons change functions automagically when I swap games and programs.
I just purchased one of these because of this thread. It had better be the most goddamn awesome mouse I have ever used. (I also like the look of their Valo keyboard)

No, it literally makes you sound retarded
even on the internet.

Well I'm glad I literally don't give a shit what you think. Even on the internet.

You are hereby ordered to do a full writeup on said mouse within 5 hours of it arriving at your place of residence.
Seriously though, I'm really on the fence about that mouse because my deathadder isn't quite dead yet and I do love it so. Any thoughts you have on it would really help. If you live in the US, can I also ask where you purchased it from? I've only found one place and I want to see if the price is any better elsewhere.
That's where I ordered it from. My expectation is that it will arrive Monday. I'll come by to tell you what I think. From looking at a lot of other reviews of it, I have high expectation since it seems the only universal complaint is that the USB connector isn't gold plated.
You've both probably been reading and watching reviews, but in case you haven't, here's a good look at the mouse, both physically and through the software.
...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.
Yeah, I saw that one. I really didn't like the way that guy did the review.
Also, thanks to the marvels of modern technology, I now have a FedEx tracking number for my order. It should be here on tomorrow, on Friday, rather than Monday as I initially though.
My initial reaction is: I am so not used to using a mouse without mouse smoothing/acceleration on. This might take some getting used to.
Thus far though, the only complaints I really have are that it's really light, even with all the weights in. I also feel it could be a little bigger. But as far as actual quality goes, it's pretty nice.

It took a very short time for me to get used to it, so a few days and you'll be fine. Yeah, without the weights the mouse is unbelievably light, with the weights in it's fine but that's just me as it's almost the same weight then as my old MX1000.
Glad you like it! But I'm sure Aiserou is dying to know - would you recommend it to him?

I have pretty large hands and I love my G9x. Then again, there isn't a mouse in the world that fits my monster hands and I have always fingertipped all my mice. YMMV.

Anyone considering the Logitech G500 should know it has no OS X support, but SteerMouse seems to work for configuring most of the buttons.
So mouse-related problem: I would like the middle thumb button of my G500 to be assignable to functions in games, but none of my steam games recognise it. How can I do this?

What do you guys mean by "the g500 has no OSX support"? Are you referring to the bundled software that logitech provides for mouse button functions, or to mouse buttons just not working, period?
I can't really recommend ever installing logitech's bundled software--the functions it provides are often extraneous and I've heard some rather unsavory rumors of what they'll do to a mac. It's not like the buttons won't work without the software.

Well, Source-based games don't recognize mouse buttons beyond the standard MOUSE1-MOUSE5. What I do is set my TF2 profile to bind the extra keys to keyboard buttons, and in my case the 10th mouse button (middle thumb) is INSERT. Left and right scroll buttons are bound the same way.

Second question: the autodetect program thing doesn't seem to work (i.e. it doesn't detect when I boot up TF2 vs Firefox and so on, and always sticks to the default config). Is there a guide to using it that I can find anywhere?

Did you remember to set the TF2 profile to be active when its executable (hl2.exe) is ran?
And of course, that you bound the button (which will show up as INS) in TF2?

I didn't know people palm their mouse.
I thought everyone fingertipped it.
Whats the advantages of palming it? Seems like you'd be using your arm muscles more than wrist muscles to move it at that point and you'd lose precision.

Good save! I forget to look for such things. Used to USB just working...
Yeah, I have no idea why there's no native OS X support, seems like a pretty easy thing to fix.
