does the ps3 do THIS?! (thinking of getting one)

Hey...

So the wife and I were on the fence. We either hunt down an apple tv or we get a ps3.
she loves stuff like heavenly sword and god of war, i wanna play uncharted etc etc...

anyhow, we were going towards an apple tv for its netflix capability. now i see that the ps3 has a non disc netflix option.

now i am wondering:

1. does the ps3 play mkv files that are 720p. (the type you get from the internet, you know... educational public domain stuff, certainly not hollywood films and the like) or does it SUCK like my 360 at that and require long and painful conversions... finding ready to play HD WMV files is bull.

2. does it go online in a web browser? does the ps3 have one ready go to like opera on the wii? does this cost extra (like buying a browser or service?)

i know google has videos of the browser, and there are of course people who chat about the mkv capabilities, but honestly sometimes the best place to go is a place like here where i can just ask these two questions and hope to get a good answer.

i dont want to hack this thing, just get a good all in one box... cant be bothered to hack this thing. i just want it to work.

thanks!
*and yes i am the guy who complains a lot, as someone here always points out lol.

    1) no, you have to convert it

    2) yes, it's free, it's opera based

The conversion isn't long and painful though, and it shouldn't be on the 360 either, you're just doing it wrong.

well i had nothing but ptoblems in the past. that was 2 years ago though so maybe it is easier now.

i dont want to pay microsoft anymore for xbox live. if i can do netflix for the $9 a month i pay for it already i will do that on the ps3.

read an article here for how to convert them
    http://hubpages.com/hub/How-To-Play-MKV-Files-On-Playstation-3

hope it isnt a long process but if it is, cest la vie.

thanks, good to know there is an opera based browser.

i look at it as $99 for the appletv vs $299 for an entire game console. if money werent tight everywhere, it would be an impulse buy heh.

I've got a free media streamer for my PS3 called Java PS3 Media Server v1.10.51. I went for it 'cause it was super-easy to install and upon running it, it immediately said "PS3 found! which folders do you want to be able to view with it?"

Now, what's extra-awesome about it is the PS3 won't natively play .mkv files, but for some reason if I stream them from my PC through the PS3, they'll play just fine on my big TV.

No need for converting, no need for copying files to the console. Very handy.

Edit: also, I'm quite fond of the PS3's web browser-particularly the zoom feature - but it doesn't handle all video players off webpages. It handles most, and YouTube is no problem, but it won't play GTTV vids, or vids embedded on Kotaku.

You should check out a bit of software called PS3 media server (not the most inventive title I realise). It allows you to play video and music files located on your pc on your ps3, providing they're both on the same network.

It worked an absolute charm for me. Simply run it on your pc, choose the folders with your "educational clips" in, boot the ps3, go to videos and you'll find them all under the ps3 media server icon.

The only issue with it can be bandwidth, if you're running both pc and ps3 on g level wireless then with high def you may get some stuttering, especially with lots of action on the screen. On LAN or n level wireless mine runs flawlessly at 720, haven't tried any 1080 yet though. If you are getting some lag, there are settings to mess around with which aren't complicated at all.

I can't really recommend this software enough. Oh did I mention it's multi platform (Java based) and completely free?

alright, so the mkv files play fine with that media server installed.
i think i read you also need that mkv2vob installed but it sounds straight forward.
does it require your pc to transcode the videos? i have two (three, not including my mac) computers but the more powerful one is the laptop (quad core i5) and the one that is wired is a dual core 2ghz core2 duo.

i have no problem using the wired to the network core2 if it will work but it only has 2 gigs of ram in it so windows 7 doesnt even like using stuff like photoshop as it is.

so again after i meander all over the place to ask this question:

is the video transcoded on the pc and sent over the network, or are these mkv files just playing on the ps3 via some trick.

Yeah, the pc does all the encoding. Mine is a 2.4ghz core2 duo and I've never had any problems, so you should be okay there. Not sure about the ram usage, I'm on 3. I would have thought 2 gigs should be okay.

Handbrake will convert MKV to MP4 which is compatible with both the 360 and PS3. I share all my media through Windows Media Player. A 720p MP4 can stutter over wireless G, even with the PC being wired. They play fine over wired connections, though.

MP4 files behave oddly in the WMP library, so you may need to delete them from Other Media and add them back manually (drag the files into your WMP library.) I don't mind it because I don't care to install additional media sharing software.

Just so you know, 360s pick up the ps3 media server too. Everyone in our house with a 360 or a ps3 streams movies from my ps3 media server with almost no set-up or upkeep required on my part besides turning it on. The only thing I've noticed is the ps3s seem (anecdotal) to be better streaming 1080p than the 360s do

From experience, MS started off that way, but they released a codec update (the one that added divx/xvid support) a while back that has brought it up to par. They also got Netflix first. There are occasional files that will lack audio on the 360, but play fine on the PS3, but otherwise they seem fairly equal. I'm sure someone will step in to correct me, though.

I find the PS3 to be far more suited for multimedia purposes, like viewing photos and the like. PS3 also supports a fair bit more video codecs, but not as much as a full set top box.

Yeah generally when I play a media file... If my 360 doesn't play it, then the PS3 plays it fine for a few minutes then it gets to this part where everything goes in slow motion and the voices get out of sync and the only way to fix it is to reboot my computer and the PS3.

So generally I just use the 360, since it doesn't take 15 minutes to open folders. And when you're navigating down a long tree it's annoying.

I've found that the divx codec pack (which is free) enables me to stream mkv files to the Xbox through the Windows Media Extender using Windows 7 http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus
Think it'll do the same for PS3 too

m2ts files seem to work as well for me (though I can't remember off the top of my head whether that's due to the divx codecs or some kind of fiddling with tversity I did).

I'm assuming this is a region thing since I've had diskless netflix for 2-3 weeks now. Also note that I've only had access to any kind of netflix for 2-3 weeks :P

Seems like a good thread to ask, does anyone else use a NAS with their console? Generally it works great but of course I can't stream mkv files since it's a direct stream (as opposed to converting on the fly.) One day I should look into a "ps3 media server variant" that can be installed on the NAS but I don't have enough mkv files to bother :P

Eh...not so much, from a practical, real-life standpoint. Both consoles require dedicated streaming programs to be remotely useful.

PS3Mediaserver will handle most of your streaming needs after you configure the correct audio and subtitle channels (if you have that sort of thing).

Interestingly, it also works on Xbox 360! In fact, the Xbox 360 is superior in the area of streaming options (you have more, and they tend to work better, such as TVersity). If you're getting a PS3 just for that reason, which I can't imagine you are, you're taking a rather expensive route.

Yeah I haven't really had to worry about that since I watch English shows/movies. :P

My MAJOR complaint about TVersity is that it uses a TON of CPU resources. If my friend is watching a tv show I can't use my computer at all to play a game. It takes ~90%.

Yeah it's not really a big deal but if I'm in the office and the wife wants to watch one of the shows on my HDD it can really kill it. I've set it to run on only one processor but that still brings the usage up to 50% immediately when she starts watching it.

The best solution is to have Netflix get every TV show known to man and allow it to stream. Fixes my problem immediately.

have you ever tried to use your computer that way? you cant really max out the video on the monitor if you do it that way, its a fullscreen issue, so if i want to do work on my pc (which means photoshop most of the time) it is impractical.

plus this set up is for her (my wife), not me. trying to make it easy for her to watch movies.

This is the best thread I could find to ask this question.

My friend is planning to buy a PS3. She is in no rush, and wonders if there is any likelihood of a sale or discount or anything for the system. Does this happen? When/what/how to plan for?

She could take or leave the Move, if that matters.

When the 160GB and 320GB systems were released there were a few places that were selling the 120GB and 250GB systems at a decent price to try and get rid of the backstock (most places just kept the older systems out and hid the newer ones in the back, though).

Generally though $300 is as cheap as it's going to get for a new PS3.
