I would have LOVED to have seen Maya as well, but it'd be character-returning overload had she shown up. It's good we get to see 'ol Edgey and Pearls.

    Thoughts on game:
I loved it, but I have my gripes with it as well. The game seemed to hold your hand alot, leading you to answers you could try and find for yourself. More typo's then there should have been. Case 1,2 and 3 are great, but case 4 and 5's (They really should have just made them one whole case.) logic felt a little all over the place at some points. It's a great case with cool moments, but not my favorite out of all the others. I can't wait for the DLC case to come out. It's supposed to take place between case 2 and 3 and it's pretty damn long.
    Concerning Pearl:
Remember hows Pearl's introduction felt abit rushed? The DLC case is when she actually first makes her appearance.

This game is really beautiful. I'm not sure how they pulled off some of the effects, the overall look of the game, on just the 3DS. Characters are basically all PS360 quality in terms of high res textures and even shiny shaders on the suits, and it appears to support at least 4 of them at a time, unless LOD kicks in when we zoom out in the courtroom. Environments are beautiful too, but I get the feeling that many of them use some trickery to achieve 3D rather than being polygonal...but I'm not sure.

Just started Case 4, I'm a bit confused on the timeline here...
As far as I can tell, it goes 2 -> 3 -> 1 -> 4... But it really seems unclear, especially in regards to Juniper. Is she graduated now, or what? Why does she seem like Normal Civilian Girl rather than Law Student in 1 and 4? Her profile in 4 says she's still studying law.

The probe probably came back empty, making the whole project an embarrassing disaster, possibly killing the entire space program if it gets out. The director wanted to cover it up and falsify the analysis, the victim found out and refused to play along.

And now any responses will be pointless since they'll either be spoilers or things I already know.

    Started Case 5 now.

    Just finished the game.

    MASSIVE SPOILERS
Jinkies! It was Old Man Fullbright all along!

Guess that explains why Gumshoe didn't make an appearance.

Pretty neat breakdown, too. Very stylish.

Anyways, the new 3D models were pretty good, with one glaring exception.
Edgeworth's model just didn't feel right to me. He just... didn't really look like Edgeworth. It was kind of disappointing.

Playing through some old PW games now. Goddamn are they ever good. I hope they bring back Examine ALL THE THINGS for the next game.

And I know I'm a grumpy old man and it'll never happen, but I really would prefer they do away with using the mini-games in court. I'd prefer they were used in investigation, like how the Magatama is used, and keep the courtroom for games of logic.

It just makes me roll my eyes so hard whenever "YOU SCRATCHED YOUR ARMPIT AT THIS POINT IN THE TESTIMONY, YOU ARE CLEARLY GUILTY, YOUR HONOR PLEASE LET ME BADGER THE WITNESS OVER THIS" happens.

I'm disappointed at how crazy the caricatures keep getting in each game.

I'm alright with weird people with strange obsessions and reactions and tics, but I'd like them to look more like normal people like they did in the first two games.

Ben and Moe were the start of having more cartoony people, and then they just went off the deep end. Apollo Justice was alright on that front I guess...

Speaking of the witnesses, someone gut-check a suspicion I got earlier today. Is it just me, or does Dual Destinies have a lot fewer overall witnesses per chapter than previous Ace Attorney games? I seem to recall case three of the first game, for instance, involving something like four or five different witnesses, while Dual Destinies averages about two or three.

I thought Juniper, Hugh and Robin were pretty good. Filch was odious but I thought still excellent.

La'belle and Means are very weird to look at though. Starbreeze seemed fine. Cosmo looks like he's based off a bunch of space captains, which is fine by me, but maybe a little over the top.

On the subject of lawyer powers, I feel like Athena's being considered permissable is juuuuust plausible, when compared to the Magatama or Percieve. At least you have an actual thread of logic to go on from Athena's thing.

I always got the feeling Apollo's was, in-court, just an extended witness pressing

    Lovely
  • Xenogears of BoreXenogears of Bore Registered User regular
Apollo's is the worst in court though.

    A: "You're lying, I saw you twitch"
    W: "Fine, I'm lying."

Phoenix's magatama is only ever really used in investigations though. I like Athena's ability but there's no penalty for wrong answers and it seems a bit leading, not to mention framing it as therapy is a bit...odd. It works well as a tool though because unlike Apollo's it draws out new information without outright accusing the person of being a liar.

I think the premise of Apollo's Perceive is that the subject is aware that they're lying and concerned that they're going to get caught at it, so Apollo calling them on it is enough to make them crack.

The therapy thing is pretty much just coaching the witness in front of everyone.

But since magic bracelets aren't permissible evidence in and of themselves, it's trivially easy to shrug that off.

"Your honor, the defendant is lying!"
    "Nope, I'm telling the truth."
    "But you scratched your arm!"
"Yeah, it's a nervous tic, what of it?"
"You're nervous because you know you're lying about [thing]!"
"No, I'm nervous because I'm in court being yelled at by a lawyer who's trying to get me arrested on false charges."

And then the prosecution objects to you badgering the witness and then that would be the end of it.

I know the Ace Attorney series would fall apart pretty quick if everyone exercised their Miranda Rights or whatever, but the Perceive thing was always over the line for me in terms of how blunt it is in its execution. Especially when the people breaking under it are often very storied and accomplished liars.

Athena's thing is silly as well, but I let it slide because
she actually DOES get called on it being bullshit, and the judge deliberates on that point and decides that he's going to let it slide based on his personal experience and belief, which is plausible enough. What is and isn't permissible in court in the AA universe is pretty consistently determined by the judge's whims rather than any clear set of laws anyway, and Phoenix's judge has seen enough weird shit over the years to be pretty jaded by stuff like this by now.

Besides, a lot of the time the subject is either cooperative or or has a personal need to not have doubt lingering over them for reasons beyond winning the current case. Also there's at least some degree of legitimate science involved (in the context of the setting).

That's because I don't think Blackquill keeps his witnesses on as short a leash as the others. In past games it's heavily implied that the prosecutors pretty much tell the witnesses what to say when they meet with them. Blackquill doesn't seem to do stuff like this; he listens to what they say they saw and builds a case around that. When a witness says something that screws up his case, it's usually because he never knew about it, but because he told them not to mention it and then they betrayed him. He is a rather shockingly honest prosecutor when you get right down to it. Outside of the occasional throwing blades or threats of bodily harm he's totally on the level.

I know Von Karma objected to you badgering witnesses. Pretty sure Edgey must have at some point, too.

Of course, all of this is done under the 'he must be up to something if he's objecting to me badgering the witness!!!!' logic. The legal system is screwy.

With all the 'this is the dark age of the law' stuff, my first thought was 'you mean the entire series?', because even if you exclude all the really silly stuff like magic bracelets and witness-leading mid-court therapy sessions, AA depicts a legal system that is horrifying in its implications.

I just finished the game, and think it's the best in the series. Really wasn't expecting it to be this good.

Agree that its only real shortcoming was the amount of hand-holding the game does. But, in the game's defense, it typically gives you just enough info beforehand to work out the solution ahead of time. At the same time, each case (except maybe the first one) threw at least one twist at me that I didn't see coming. It's amazing how well the game could keep surprising me, while maintaining my illusion of ace detectivery.

(Only other problem is the preponderance of typos. I lost count at around ten, but there are many...)

Also, I think that, if there is another entry in the series, I would prefer it if all gimmicks (Psyche-Locks, Tells, and Analytical Psychology) were mostly confined to the investigation part of the game. In my opinion, the courtroom sections have always been fun enough to stand on their own, while the investigation sections could really benefit from more variety.

That's one major reason why they're so freaked out when he breaks the shackles.
