My feeble attempt at drawing John Muir after almost 10 years of not drawing anything.

I've got a lot of practice hours ahead of me :\ Oh well I need a hobby for the next 2 - 3 years, so hopefully drawing will keep me out of trouble.

Drawn with a #2 pencil on a sheet of paper :p

I also rediscovered my biggest PITA w/ drawing.. being a superior handed individual.. everything I draw, I smear :\

Take another sheet of paper and put it over your drawing where the side of your hand would rest, this helps to mitigate smudging.

You can also (never done it myself so my recommendations don't carry the weight of experience here) buy some http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/catalog/shop_product_detail.jsp?skuId=265992&productId=265992&WT.mc_id=Shopping_Feed_Products_Google_Free_Listing"]white cotton gloves to avoid smudging/getting oil from your hands on the drawing. This is something that early animators did, which is why those white gloves were incorporated into the design for Mickey Mouse.

An alternate to that is buying some weird-ass half-glove thing (Cakemikz can fill you in on that, he's the only person I've ever known to use one of these), but trying to rock that look makes people think you're making some bizarre and possibly perverse Michael Jackson-style fashion statement (Cakemikz can fill you in on that, as well.)

The glove works pretty well, but if you are using it for traditional media it's going to get worn pretty quickly. People will make fun of you if you wear it. But that only made me wear it harder.

I haven't really noticed my hand sticking to my tablet, is that a surface thing on the newer ones?

Also wouldn't the glove still pick up graphite and still smudge?

While they can smudge it isn't as significant, and the main idea is to keep the oils from your hand off the paper so even when it does smudge it doesn't cause a real issue. As for the tablet, I got it primarily for my tablet pc which has a much slicker surface and is harder to glide your hand across.

In the ref the tip of her nose coincides with her hands (like, if you drew a vertical line), so that could be part of it.

And I guess its a mix of not enough neck/too high of a collarbone.

Been working on a 3D mock up for my latest project. Totally getting out of my comfort zone and making a realistic woman in a fantasy style mock up.

redheadpreview06.jpg

This is the 3D version I have so far to work on as a starting off point.

outfitcomp03.jpg

The painted over version for coming up for ideas. I imagine a strong independent woman character, influenced by some Xena and other fantasy game reference. Like I said, totally not working in my strong suit but it's already been a lot of fun.

Definitely looking for any kind of feedback/suggestions on anything.
can you post your topology? Modelling nude and then building that armor on top is potentially problematic - that strap for the shoulderpad in particular, if it isn't going to be just a texture, is going to be a pain to skin without getting tons of clipping if you haven't planned the edge flow to account for it

Oh yeah, don't I know how that goes. I can post the topology later for sure. Right now, I'm using a few different assets that I welded together so areas like the wrist and neck look a bit odd. I plan to retopologize it even further - not just her but her whole outfit to be about 10,000 tris optimally.

I also experimented with some different hairstyles. Someone commented that her hair looks very 50's house wife so we'll see where that goes. I think now I'm really looking for possible costume/style suggestions. I can figure out how to make it all work in 3D later.

so last night I ended up downloading like fifty brushes, and I spent most of my time using them all and looking for which ones I liked best. And then I drew some grass. And then I drew a house in it.
dWeir.jpg

but now I don't know what details to add to the house, or what else I could do to make it look more like the house belongs there. Also maybe give the blades of grass more texture?
