you can place torches in the nether, so torch highways connecting portals is a good idea. I made a portal so far out that it's a real time 30+ minute walk to my spawn.

Yeah, I did the same thing. I didn't have any more torches so I just took the netherstone with me and laid a trail of it and lit it on fire so I could find my way back (I had a compass to find my way back to my first portal).
I thought everyone realised that using flint+steel is way more effective than torches when it comes to walking around the nether. Not that it matters since a ghast will blow you up in 20 seconds anyway.
DeShadowC, for that rant you started a few pages back, I've lost all respect for you. Notch is a one man army. He's setting up a company, trying to update a Alpha Staged game so whinny geese like you can say he isn't doing his job (he didn't have to give us this game or update). He's human. Now if he did have his company up and they released this crap, I won't be so forgiving. But to bad mouth the guy for a patch that was buggy isn't cool. There are tons of games out there that are even buggier than this and people still play them (VtM:B and Alpha Protocol being the first to come to mind).

I haven't played much since the update, but I did load up last night. I forgot I was deep in an explored cavern looking for Iron and I tried to head back up and all I hear are zombies, and spiders. I thought I had enough torches!!
Edit: Also, my iron sword's health is in the red. Oh god Oh god Oh god
edit: sitting here listening to gentle piano music overlayed with hellpigs gurgling and screaming, and the screen is stuck in portal-entering purple swirly overlay. Unable to move/exit the minecart that isn't there anymore. This is like a bad trip.
doubledit: I eventually save+quit'd. re-loading the save spawned me in the nether with my head stuck in the roof of the cavern, limbs flailing everywhere as I slowly suffocated.
Ok, now I don't feel so silly for trying this. What's interesting is that if you go back to your portal after respawning, your minecart is still sitting there, like it sucked you right out of it.
I wondered if the minecart warp bug was related to the one that makes you fall through the floor if you break a minecart while sitting in it.. but it sounds like yours sent you way up on the Z level, while mine sent me way down. (My portal sits on a very thin gravel cliff over the lava sea)
Game has been updated to fix the death/lost inventory bug. I don't know if it works yet because I noticed it after quitting because I lost everything again.
Wait, what was this bug? can you clarify?
I was showing my little sister minecraft last night and happened to get blown up by a creeper two minutes in. I raced back to the site and all my stuff was gone. Eight iron picks and shovels down the drain.

Notch has said many times to not get too used to your savefiles during the alpha. Expect bugs, or even requirements that you have to make a brand new world.

Im going to laugh when i see on the news that a criminal prone kid strangled his brother to death with a shoelace when he erased his minecraft save.

Next experiment: Boats through portals!
Tried this as well. When stuck, I just used my pick in every direction, didn't seem to work so I tried placing TNT, took a minute to set it and ignite it in that glitched out state, but when it blew I survived! (was trying to suicide so my save wouldn't be ruined by this experiment). That left me in a very nice sized cavity within the redstones. I built a portal and got out, a long hike to spawn.
BTW: TNT is super effective on firestone. It leaves behind a massive hole and huge piles of the stuff for pickup.
Now to devise a Ghast farm... muahahaha!!!
Edit: PS, TNT also turns off portals without harming the obsidian frame. May be useful in stabilizing portal generation?
Edit2: TNT sealed in solid firestone will produce a spherical cavity about 7 wide, dropping a full stack of firestone to pick up. Not very efficient if you're mining for it in large quantities (makes awesome scaffolding!), but it is surely TNT at it's finest.
Ein, can you send me an updated file for the worldfair server?
Could I also have a copy of the world?
I do not like the way these new biomes are created and would much prefer to play on your custom-biome created world. Plus the structures and craftsmanship is just amazing.
Is it just me or are there A LOT more monsters spawning since the update? And sometimes it'll be mostly one type. Like I got a lot of spiders the last night.
I'm working right now on getting the server back to operation.
I run two servers. They both have Hey0's mod installed. Both machines are on Windows 7 Home Premium, both are 64-bit. One has 6GB Ram (G+T's server), one has 4GB Ram (SE++'s server), but since I start the server with -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar Minecraft_Mod.jar I don't think that's a relevant consideration, since both are only using 1 GB. Both servers have approximately equivalent pings from a third party, so I don't think the issue is a connection-based one.
The one with the 4GB RAM, SE++'s, works smoothly and uninterrupted since the Halloween patch, while running Hey0's mod. There is no intermittent extreme lag, and when you /home or /warp to places, the chunks load in immediately around you. You can place or destroy blocks without difficulty.
The other server, with the 6GB RAM, G+T's, has been having these tremendous lag issues. Blocks placed immediately dissapear, and chunks almost never load so you're always standing near the edge of the world.
Looking at the differences between the two, the one that works is running Java version 1.6.0_13. The one that does not is running Java version 1.6.0_21. I'm going to try and see if I can roll my Java version back to _13, to see if that might not be the root of the problem.

I've noticed this too. In areas that were previously relatively safe (at sea level specifically) I've been getting totally whacked.
I think what would be cool is if difficulty ramped up over time. Like for the first 10 hours of the game, it's like it was pre-update, then it rolls up to now (or higher) over the next few "days".
In my new world, I've so far just been doing serious branch mining, gathering up materials. My only shelter is a secure storeroom connected to my mine. Not really a home at all. In my last (and first) world, I built what I thought of as a grand castle. I see now that it was undersized and, as a result, blocky and lacking detail. Quite an eyesore.
Now, it's about time to start planning and surveying for my improved home. I'd had a dearth of good ideas, until... well my new world/spawn location is a beautiful chain of islands and coves. Cair Paravel!
Hmm, with all those arches... that'd be pretty fucking huge and ambitious for singleplayer. Yet, on the other hand, it'd keep me busy and interested for a long time. Hmm. The main problem is, oddly, despite being conceptualized in a major film, there are very few detailed shots available...
Fake edit: oh god, I could construct a Dawn Treader in the harbor!
Ever since the update my game has been running it what I would call "fast forward"; it feels like everything is running double time, and it's making it difficult to build anything when I'm placing 2 blocks at once all the time. Anyone else experienced this and know how to fix it?

creepy as fuck
No, no you're not. After last night's terrifying excursion, I'm almost refusing to go into another one. Ever.
Fucking creepy dark tunnels with noises coming from them fuuuuuuuck why did you add random scary noises, Notch?!
I hope he adds super-monsters, like dwarf fortress's legendaries, to justify my fears.

Ya, 1 or 5. They sounds like Zombies. Or there were zombies around me at the time. It was a bit chaotic.

I've found 3, and one with a face. They're all neatly stored away now. I have no idea what to do with them.
I think I know where I'll be building my first fortifications.
Biomes still need to be larger, but they do spice the game up a bit

Edit: carbon that desert is goddamn unbelievable. Biomes need to have a radius of at least the max draw distance
