I like how bottle caps actually have worth in this game, as theres sooooooo much stuff you can buy, expensive stuff. I find myself hoarding every expensive thing I see, as I damn sure need the money.
Actually I've barely used VATs in NV. It's essentially suicide against anything decent in melee. I'm actually okay with this, it makes it really hard (actually impossible) to cheese any situation using the ridiculous DR it gave in FO3.
o man, THIS. I'm surprised how little I'm using vats this time around. Sniping things from a distance with my vermint rifle with a night scope is too much fun, but I need an upgrade soon....anyone know if theres a scope for the cowboy repeater or hunting rifle?

I had no idea they were in the game until I read a loading screen tip. My body literally siezed up and I got chills. First playthrough FO3 Old Olney flashbacks... bad times man... bad times.
Except now they are actually intimidating and you can't just VATs + Shotgun + Aim for head = iwinlolz.
They just rape your face off.

I've used vats a few times for cinematic effect. Otherwise i'm all ironsights on their faces.

They're SUPPOSED to add ammo and cases and other shit to your inventory in bulk. They do, but the only do it if you pick them up as an actual object in the world - buying them doesn't trigger the script that makes them dole out the actual useable items, so you have to drop them and pick 'em up again to get them to activate.
EDIT: Are there any other lever-action guns besides the shotgun? Because that gun is just pure estascy in firearm form and I ain't swapping it out unless I come across a Pancor Jackhammer, and if I can get a sweet little something in LA form that uses 5.56 and can compete with the Service Rifle, that would be wonderful.

I think vats would be more rewarding if the sweet spot (the head) wasnt pretty much always a 95 percent chance. They should go back to fallout and ad bonus targets with low chance to hit but big rewards, like the groin and the eyes.
So I got to New Vegas and tracked down the guy I was looking for...
...and when I confronted Benny my Black Widow perk kicked in.
I convinced Benny that him shooting me in the head made me horny for him. We went back to his room, I sexed him up and then killed him in his sleep. What an oddly dirty victory. Also, I love this game.
I'm really enjoying the game overall now that I've gotten my save issues worked out. I don't feel like an invincible badass like in FO3 and just when I start to feel a little badass, I wander into some new area and giant butterflies beat me up and I have to run for my life (again). I'm also a fan of hardcore, just a little extra that forces me to do things and carry stuff I'd normally just ignore.
Finding wildlife in Goodsprings isn't weird, typically one of the townspeople get hungry and go hunting and while they are out they aggro something and it chases em back to town. My first character had to be remade because a Deathclaw was pulled into town.
Sir, I say sir. Now look, sir, just look at what you've done. This here is a classic example of telling when sir, you should be showing!
A small town in the Mojave wasteland being overrun by a blood thirsty Death Claw is the sort of story that deserves more than a thimble of exposition.
Harrumph.
Honest to bessy, this brings a tear to my good eye.

Eh, the dart gun made all wildlife pretty laughable in FO3. I just viewed deathclaws as spare parts to make the glove with.
Of course if you managed to stumble in there without one... yeah ew

If you don't immediatly go to cripple a Deathclaw's leg, I think you may be doing it wrong.
The problem is when the assholes sneak up on you.
I encountered one while assaulting Black Mountain. After a fierce battle at the top, I was walking past the crater, in the middle of a firefight with about seven mutants, when all of a sudden I get a message saying ED-E was killed.
Low and behold, I turn around, and all of a sudden this big brown blob of speed comes streaking past into the middle of the mutant horde, little pieces of steel and circuitry still clinging to it's claws.
Also, those new insects, the Casavores, or whatever they're called, can go eat a bag of dicks. The young ones aren't too bad, but the big ones can two shot Boone in high end combat armor. Nevermind the fact that they fly, are fast, usually run in packs, and can do the same to you too.

The other day when I was heading to Nipton, I came across a lady with a mohawk who ran up to me and thanked me for killing some guy who had been attacking her. I didn't see any guy attacking her, but I can only surmise it was one of the 5 or 6 bandits I killed by some run-down houses a minute earlier. I had a few options of what to say to her, including something about "He was probably after Sarasparilla bottle caps." I chose that one and she said she didn't know what that meant and ended the conversation.
Immediately after that, another dude runs up to me and starts telling me how he's been following me and how I clearly have no idea how valuable Sarasparilla bottle caps are, etc. He walks off on his merry way, and suddenly the mohawk lady turns hostile and tries to kill me. She dies quickly, and I notice she has 6-7 Sarasparilla bottle caps on her.
That's been one of the weirder encounters for me so far.
turns out that the fallout 3 nmc texture pack actually works just fine in new vegas, if anyone was interested, presumably the extra armour/models and such should be a doodle to transfer over.

Man. The pre order gear is just.... Ludicrously broken. I seriously just cheesed my way through slaughtering ALL of the Correctional Facility with 20 stims and a whole heap of ammo. Now I gotta find how to repair unique armors, since traders dont seem to know how to fix my stuff up anymore.
Secondary, holy hell they found a way to balance VATS. I actually tried to grenade spam the Admin Building (They're all bunched up and pistol wielding, so its a really NOT SUPPOSED TO WIN encounter if you charge in guns blazing) and I died halfway through my second stick of TNT. A fast load, some mines, some shotgun ducking around corners, and I managed to finish em all off. Didnt get anything particularly neat other than a plasma pistol and a blade gauntlet I wont be using, but MAN that was intense.
Tertiary.... Where does a man find some duct tape? Or people who sell Turpentine and White Nettle?

I know that encounter. Here is how mine went.
I saw a guy shooting in the distance at an enemy I couldn't see. By the time I got there he had stopped and he ran up to me and thanked me for helping and was talking about how he had been travelling with the mohawk girl and they'd gotten along well, when she suddenly turned on him telling him to give her the Sarasparilla bottle caps. I then had an option to say something which I forgot, to say "Well that's lucky...for me" and just "goodbye". I'm playing a good char...but dammit I wanted those bottle caps so I smoked him and took the caps. Then I found the mohawk girl and looted hers as well.
Gah! Need to be home scouring the wasteland not here at work!
Quick question about the legion:
do you break a bunch of quests etc. if you kill the group of legion guys in front of the town hall in nipon or whatever that town is? The one where they had the lottery?

Maybe? I can't remember his name anymore. He was a black guy with some gray facial hair, if I remember correctly.

That's pretty funny. That guy's body is probably lying around somewhere near Nipton for me. I should have another look.
You guys are wallet's worst nightmare, you know that?
Guess I'll have to deal with the bugs for now..
Man I'd just do it, it's as delightfully broken as the old fallouts were, and it has that special something in the writing they had. It's the closest thing I guess I could expect to classic fallouts in this day and age.
I mean, probably better than half of us playing on PC have lost between 3 - 8 hours of saves because of the quicksave / autosave thing, and I'm pretty sure we all just kinda picked back up and went back into it a different way. I know it's all I've been doing after getting home for the last three days, has caused me all kinds of lost sleep, and has me contemplating "just how long can I hold this" so, it's pretty compelling.
edit:
I also vote boone for companion.
It's just, he pops that lady's dome the INSTANT she is in his line of sight, before he even knows about the RECIEPT for his wife and unborn daughter, thats some hardcore shit.

Different ammo types -- I have 2500 rounds of 5mm surplus (no idea where i found it); the modifiers are Cond x 3.0, Gun Spread x 1.2, and Dam x 1.15
Does this mean it wears my gun down 3x faster, or 3x slower?
I think the perks that increase vats accuracy are significantly reduced in value due to skill playing no part in shooting outside of vats. I can headshot people at maximum draw distance with a scope on the starting rifle with 100% accuracy. Guns is at 45 or so.
Hrmn. Yeah, just buy the bloody thing. They're moving quick on patches as it is, and if you turn off the steam cloud and hard save (CAPSLOCK ATTENTION GETTER : DONT FREAKING RELY ON QUICKSAVES) and you'll be just fiiiiiiine.
in NV is there any armour that looks like the ranger combat armour from FO3?
and is it possible to go through this game killing pretty much everyone you come across and looting their bodies without messing up the plot?

save savegame0X (1-9)
and cycle those. I haven't lost a save since I started doing it, and it's helped me out of my own in-game stupidity (hurf durf deathclaws!?!?!?!?!) once or twice as well.

I'm finding that your chance to hit the head tends to go down significantly after each shot in VATS.
The first one will hit just fine, and maybe the second. Then they'll do something like change direction or recoil in pain, and you'll miss with the rest of the sequence.

Oh holy fuck, Giant Radscorppians are absolute monsters if you have that absolute DT mod installed. I've got a service rifle and can't even scratch them unless I get criticals often (which thankfully I do from Finesse). I ran into an NCR Patrol, and it absolutly massacred them (free loot, though!).
